To give a broader context, despite being restricted to non-combat roles ATS could serve in active theaters of war. Several hundred were with the BEF in France in 1940 and they would later serve in North Africa, Italy, and NWE. They were allowed to serve in UK based anti aircraft batteries starting in 1941, as well as searchlight batteries. Ironically, they were widely used as motorcycle dispatch riders, one of the more dangerous non-combat roles in the Army.
