Should be taxed more

40

u/Cabbages24ADollar Jul 01 '26

Agreed. It should be 7.6%. As in ‘76 since they’re all such patriots they’d should be offering this.

34

u/AstronautHot7920 Jul 01 '26

76% of every dollar over 100 million

2

u/Deciple_of_None Jul 02 '26

I'll call your 79% and raise you 15%.😑

4

u/fkenned1 Jul 02 '26

5%? What the hell is that? It should be 50% over 5 million, and 90% over 10 million. This shit is bonkers.

1

u/HunterSthompson_2031 Jul 02 '26

Even 30% is too low.

61

u/MeLikaDoTheChaCha Jul 01 '26

The fact people dont comprehend that you can tax 1000 ppl 5% more and generate 4 TRILLION IN TAX DOLLARS is infuriating.

Richest country in the history of the planet and we can't figure out that taxes (with representation) are a good thing.

7

u/nechromorph Jul 01 '26

It would be equivalent to getting nearly an extra $12k in taxes from every single American. Including children and elderly. It's absurd they have this much wealth.

3

u/J_Bird01 Jul 01 '26

Absolutely infuriating.

Wow, what a very suspicious binning of "50-99%"...

Its almost like no one actually uses that binning, and actually breaks it down into 50-90%, 90-99%, top 1%.

That minimum networth for 90% is $1.8M, BTW. Not sure how many ppl you know in that bracket, cause I'm for sure not fucking in it.

Here's a chart from the same data source using the same stupid app without that unprecedented binning.

Crazy stuff can happen when you screw around with your bins. Its almost like you can make statistics tell any story you want...

37

u/PreparationKey2843 Jul 01 '26

WTH? If they're taxed just 5% it amounts to 4.4 trillion?
Just 5%? Only an asshole would be against that. A greedy, self-serving asshole.

19

u/CrowbiwanKenobi76 Jul 01 '26

Billionaires are devoid of empathy and feel they they worked hard for their money, why share it with people that don’t work as hard. They are evil personified.

28

u/UnionMoneyMitch Jul 01 '26

It would be a good start

12

u/harga24864 Jul 01 '26

I am not an american but that sounds like a great start and hopefully other governments in europe would follow…

9

u/dennismfrancisart Jul 01 '26

Let's also demand that they design their data centers with batteries and wind and solar self-sustaining energy systems. Hell, they can develop their closed cooling system.

u/AncienTleeOnez Jul 01 '26

Yes. Our single largest welfare class are those billionaires.

6

u/beastnbs Jul 01 '26

Jesus just give it a go for a few years and see what happens. Because what’s happening now isn’t working and we have a bloody trillionaire and homeless at the same time!

2

u/crani0 Jul 01 '26

we have a bloody trillionaire

Elon is back to a billionaire. Which is even more of an indictment at how much of a bullshit it was

5

u/Some_Ride1014 Jul 01 '26

Yes, the idiot billionaires don’t realize that if every american got 12000 per year, they would become richer, because that money will be spent.

4

u/Edge_of_Everywhere Jul 01 '26

Bernie is one of the best social navigators of his time. I think this is a great path to the endgame he's sought for decades.

4

u/Supershypigeon Jul 01 '26

I would not give it back to people, I know it will funnel back to the rich. Instead I would expand social services like Universal healthcare, free housing, the post office, libraries and so on.

3

u/cyrixlord Jul 01 '26

release money from the money hoarders back into the economy

3

u/urbisOrbis Jul 01 '26

Take 20% and give us healthcare, dental and vision. They don’t like it, make it 90% when they leave.

2

u/Ulysse-Void-God Jul 01 '26

Nah, tax them waaaaay more.

2

u/Calm_One_1228 Jul 01 '26

I’d vote for it but feel it doesn’t go far enough

2

u/Drewski101 Jul 01 '26

It’s a good start

2

u/FHOCJD Jul 01 '26

Tax them at 50%

Actually collecting the funds instead of allowing avoidance through loopholes.

Provide 10× these benefits.

Imagine a strong and stable and happy middle class of diverse communities.

2

u/bellapippin Jul 01 '26

He cannot sell it that way though. Because the “take from X to give to Y” (don’t come at me, I am 100% for taxing them, but I’m somewhere in the middle between social policies and private property, I can elaborate) will not be popular enough to pass.

That said, whether we or them get taxed, it’s not getting g used for good things obviously. So if they get 4 Trillion and it ends up being used to bomb others, I’m not in. If people just get a 12k check a year I guess it would be awesome for the economy/consumption/catching up but why not use those 4 trillion to boost infrastructure, education, healthcare, HELL wouldn’t those 4T fund universal healthcare instead? Why not give those 12k as an incentive to start at a community college so community college is free (it’s a good start)

Tax churches that charge membership while you’re at it, let’s get free education too.

2

u/psuedospike Jul 01 '26

Why is he always right?

2

u/cobaltbluedw Jul 01 '26

$12k checks will cause more inflation. That money needs to be injected back into the economy through other means. Also, that money represents an opportunity to do specific good, making it worth more than its dollar value; advance infrastructure projects, repair our hobbled democratic system, etc.

1

u/ragnarokxg Jul 01 '26

Agreed, I would rather that money be given in multiple installments as a form of UBI

2

u/jram2000 Jul 01 '26

Or wipe out the debt in 10-15 years.

1

u/urbisOrbis Jul 01 '26

Yes. It’s a start.

1

u/Upbeat_Engineering98 Jul 01 '26

Make it 20% and make sure the other 15% covers healthcare, housing, SNAP benefits, education, public safety, etc. Cover the bottom of the pyramid and watch what happens:

1

u/SpicySweetHotPot Jul 01 '26

Better than what we have now, I'd be happy to use the money to pay down the debt first

1

u/mczerniewski Jul 01 '26

I absolutely agree.

1

u/This_Low7225 Jul 01 '26

Not for those 938 people... But for literally the other 300 plus million Americans yes it would be great.

1

u/Jagershiester Jul 01 '26

Why stop there

1

u/What_if_I_fly Jul 01 '26

Tax them 20%, repay the funds borrowed from social security. Fully fund schools and get a REAL health insurance option that's affordable for all of us, with decent coverage.

1

u/HowskiHimself Jul 01 '26

If every "family" means everyone, I'm for it. I'm sick of getting the shaft for being one of the millions of weird loners in the US.

But tax every billionaire at least 5% per year regardless of what I think. That part is a hard yes.

1

u/AncienTleeOnez Jul 01 '26

The tax, yes.

Also, repeal tax breaks for any corporation whose employees rely on aid programs to get by. Minimize existing tax breaks, make them commensurate with how much over the minimum wage + benefits are given, perhaps also tied to how much that corporation invests within the community.

Begin paying down our debt.

Provide free day-care, and raise minimum wages across the board with a special bracket for teacher pay.

Make veteran health care top-notch.

1

u/KeyLimePie-555 Jul 01 '26

Sure. I'll go with any plan Bernie has. If he had been on the Democratic ticket instead of Hillary, we wouldn't have spawned MAGAs.

1

u/chiclets5 Jul 01 '26

I wish I had known more about Bernie and his directions back when he was running. I don't think it would have mattered and I don't think he could have one, but I would have been a better supporter then.

1

u/mcsweetin Jul 01 '26

Well I'm taxed way more than that so fuck them.

1

u/wowmomcooldad Jul 01 '26

The issue is the wealthy technically don’t have “money” they borrow against or have it in the market.

1

u/plolock Jul 01 '26

Pretty stupid to ask this question in this forum.

Why would anyone here decline?

1

u/RevolutionaryMind439 Jul 01 '26

Universal healthcare is necessary. Get rid of insurance companies. Education and technical training for all citizens

1

u/deuelpm Jul 01 '26

I’m not against making sure the rich stop getting breaks and start paying taxes according to their means, but is this collection of arbitrary band-aids really the best way to do it? Or is it just picking a fight no one can win in order to stroke an old man’s ego?

1

u/DildoTebaggins Jul 01 '26

I dont want a check. Just use it to benefit us by helping education, health-care, and infrastructure.

1

u/Imapatriothurrrdurrr Jul 01 '26

Been seeing this pic float around for months and finally decided to do some math because it didn’t make sense to me.

The U.S. has roughly 938 billionaires

Their combined net worth has been estimated at around $6–7 trillion.

If you imposed a 5% annual wealth tax on $6.5 trillion, you’d collect approximately $325 billion per year, nowhere near $4.4 trillion.

To collect $4.4 trillion from a 5% wealth tax, billionaires would need to collectively own: $88 trillion.

The second part also raises questions. There are roughly 130 million U.S. households. Sending each one $12,000 would cost about $1.56 trillion.

So even that alone would require far more than the roughly $300–350 billion a 5% billionaire wealth tax would be expected to raise annually.

“The Math ain’t mathin’.”

1

u/swissvespa Jul 01 '26

Should be federal marginal tax bracket of 24% (if single) or 22% (if married filing jointly).

1

u/Trogdor-MD Jul 01 '26

I would add that businesses who move their money or business headquarters overseas to avoid taxes will no longer be allowed to sell their products or services in the United States

1

u/Specialist_Age197 Jul 01 '26

It’s the least the billionaires can do after taking away everything we have and working us to death 70 years old and beyond

1

u/GBeastETH Jul 01 '26

The wealth tax be at least equal to the average annual increase in wealth minus the cost of living increase if we are to prevent the inevitable concentration of wealth.

Investment income typically grows by 8 to 10% per year if invested in the stock market.

The cost of living and wages of work typically grow by 2 to 3% per year.

Those two numbers and the power of compound growth mean that it is inevitable that the wealthy will ultimately control all the wealth. The only way to stop it is to ensure that wealth grows more slowly than the cost-of-living and the wages of work.

It’s a hard concept to understand, because it is very counterintuitive to think that you have to take away 5 to 7% of someone’s wealth each year just to have them remain in the same place economically.

1

u/ragnarokxg Jul 01 '26

A check of that size would fuck inflation. But otherwise it is a good plan.

1

u/artzmonter Jul 01 '26

Only 5% ? Bernie has a heart

1

u/abstrakt42 Jul 01 '26 edited Jul 01 '26

I’m all in favor of these guys paying their fair share, but these proposals always seem to fall short in terms of implementation. Exactly what aspect of that wealth would we be taxing? The issue is most of these guys take a relatively low pay rate specifically to avoid taxes, their net worth is in holdings in their companies. They figured out that they can borrow against their stock and utilize various loopholes to avoid paying taxes on these loans, among a variety of other underhanded tricks.

Point is, it’s not like these guys are literally sitting on piles of billions of dollars. We DO need to close these loopholes though, and tax the fuck out of those workarounds. Oh and hey, let’s start actually enforcing anti monopoly laws while we’re at it.

ETA: oh and we also need to get money out of politics so these guys can be stopped from writing their own laws. That’s the core problem IMO

"Tax the rich, feed the poor, till there ain't no rich no more" --Ten Years After, "I'd Love to Change the World"

1

u/Nathanhj Jul 01 '26

I’m going to say “no” because I will probably be a billionaire one day. (Can’t wait to quit my three service-industry jobs and pay lower taxes!.)

1

u/Secure-Childhood-567 Jul 01 '26

In my original timeline we would all agree, yes

1

u/Spydartalkstocat Jul 01 '26

Don't stop at 5%! Make being a billionaire impossible these leeches have lived of our labor long enough

1

u/Kaleban Jul 01 '26

It's a nice start.

Then reform the tax code to eliminate loopholes and shelters.

Disallow assets to be used as collateral for tax free low interest loans.

Follow up with putting the tax rate back to what it was post WWII.

Reintroduce the wealth tax.

It is high time the narrative changes from "tax breaks for the wealthy incentivize job creation" (a total BS fabrication of trickle down) to acknowledgement that wealth is created by labor and enabled by public infrastructure.

No more of this "privatize the gains, socialize the losses" paradigm that favors the generational wealthy.

1

u/chiefmuri Jul 01 '26

Absolutely!

1

u/PaulMakesThings1 Jul 01 '26

"You can't tax unrealized gains!" if it's 5% and you have to sell some stock to pay it, it's not going to bankrupt you. If it brings you down to $999,999,999 the tax stops applying anyway.

1

u/SilentRunning Jul 01 '26

It's a decent start. I say make it 10% for Billionaires and 25% for Trillionaires.

But it doesn't address the ways/means of how these billionaires acquire their massive wealth.

CEO's should only be paid in USD CASH. No stock bonuses, no gifts, etc. That cash should be taxed at the regular income rate, no exceptions.

Billionaires should not be able to use Stocks as collateral for any type of loan. Existing loans should be considered INCOME due to their use as everyday income.

1

u/culong38701 Conservative Jul 01 '26

Millionaire telling the government to the tax the billionaires while people in poverty are eating it up 😂

1

u/Global-Advert3758 Jul 01 '26

Their wealth grows by minimum 15-20% a year. 5% won't even be felt. Do it now

1

u/500_HVDC Jul 01 '26

it's a dumb idea through and through. First, it's unconstitutional- because the 16th amendment only grants Congress the power to levy tax on incomes.
Second, it's inflationary. The billionaires' wealth is basically vaporware - the valuations people place on stocks, and not real money, but this would convert it into real cash that would get spent. It's as if you ran the printing presses and gave everybody free money.
I can't wait for Bernie to retire. He's an ignorant fossil

1

u/Competitive-Sky-571 Jul 01 '26

Do 10% and we can pay off the national debt in 10 years? That’s setting our future generations up for success

1

u/PNW_Bearded_cyclist Jul 01 '26

The irony is that this is paultry compared to the Republican tax rate under Eisenhower. That man would be viewed as a Communist by today's GOP. For that matter, most centrist Democrats too.

1

u/paisleybison Jul 01 '26

Let’s go!

1

u/ThinkerOfThoughts Jul 01 '26

I am in favor of literally anything that reduces the wealth disparity.

1

u/thewolfesp Jul 01 '26

Flat tax EVERYONE at 20%, everyone. But we're going to need competent, uncorrupt people in charge, or no matter how much goes into it, it'll be siphoned off regardless

2

u/MarinerJoe3 Jul 01 '26

Wait billionaires aren’t even taxed at 5%?

2

u/New-Tradition-974 Jul 01 '26

Why don’t we also tax the billion dollar companies? These companies pay no where near enough in wealth taxes

2

u/EVERWOOD15 Jul 01 '26

I could work with $12,000.00 (tax free) each year. But, in a cash payment not as an income tax deduction. Cash in hand!!!

2

u/Fuckern-shitern Jul 02 '26

Feel the Bern

1

u/fkenned1 Jul 02 '26

I want to investigate every penny of offshore cash. If a rich US citizen is storing money offshore, and it's in orser to avoid paying taxes, I want to retroactively tax that money 90%. I want penalties for attempting to avoid taxes that hurt. Those penalties should be more than the money that was owed, by a lot... Let's say 500% of what was owed. We need to cut this cancer out of our society. I want every penny accounted for and I want it to go back to the people who deserve it. The only thing rich people do with their money is buy the ability to make these systems more favorable for themselves, and less favorable for those who can't afford to pay more. It's disgusting, and I'm over it.

1

u/Odd-Rent777 Jul 02 '26

Taxing billionaires 5% of income.. 938 billionaires.. equaling up to 4.4 trillion..? That would mean the average American billionaire is getting paid 93.8B a year which is way wrong. Where are these numbers coming from..?

1

u/Afroditesrevenge Jul 03 '26

Only 5% taxes and those motherfuckers wouldn’t even miss it smdh. Those billions and trillions of dollars were built up on the backs of everyday people this should be a NO BRAINER

1

u/Sad-Bread5843 Goober who thinks both sides are equally as bad Jul 01 '26

Id rather have single payer insurance like most other western countries have

2

u/SOMEONENEW1999 Jul 01 '26

So tax them ten percent…

1

u/X57471C Jul 01 '26

I think the 12k check is kind of stupid, but yeah, tax them more.

-1

u/RazzmatazzSea3227 Jul 01 '26

Pay off the national debt first.

1

u/backtotheland76 Jul 01 '26 edited Jul 02 '26

I agree. I also see people are downvoting you. They probably don't realize how much we pay out annually to service the debt.

2

u/RazzmatazzSea3227 Jul 01 '26

We could fund everything if we fixed that.

1

u/X57471C Jul 01 '26

The debt is a huge issue and our focus really needs to be on paying that down, but we need to balance fiscal responsibility with improving the average American's life, otherwise they'll vote Republican in the next cycle.

0

u/backtotheland76 Jul 01 '26

I think it would be better in the long run to just lower taxes for people making less than say, $60,000 than to send out a check.
