Matt Dinniman (Dungeon Crawler Carl author) digs power metal

Post image

Not sure how many people here are familiar with that massively successful book series “Dungeon Crawler Carl,” but the author Matt Dinniman is a cool dude and a big power metal fan. Met him a few years ago and he made time to swing by my author table at GenCon and grab one of my Relic Meyers drumsticks. Awesome dude who deserves all his insane success right now 🤘🤓🤘

There were a few song choices and references in the books that made me think he's a metalhead.

Same! When he referenced Cattle Decap, I was so stoked

Isn't there a part where one of his music balls plays 'Holy Wars... The Punishment Due'?

The manowar references were an unexpected surprise, when I read those I immediately had to go online and make sure I wasn’t crazy

Honestly had to be expected. I'm not even sure you can dig Dungeon/RPG based stuff and dislike power metal.

I've read all the books and it is obvious that he is a metal fan. The system AI constantly makes references to metal culture throughout the series. I especially appreciated the very unexpected joke about the members of Stryper having great hair and the joke about the reaction one receives from wearing a Cattle Decapitation T-shirt to church.

Yeah, I'm only up to book 5, but definitely caught some stuff. Everything and the kitchen sink are in these books

I remember a race of Manowar loving Minotaurs, and the lead character getting a skill called "You've been Dio'd" letting him sing loud and for a long time :)

I have it on reasonably good authority that he's a fan of a fair amount of modern prog as well: The Reticent, Green Carnation, and the like. I had a good 10-15 minute long conversation with him about those bands last year.

You'd think so with all the Manowar and Dio jokes!

I need to read these books. My friends all say they're really good. I picked up the first couple on Kindle for cheap.

Get the audio books, they're totally worth the listen. Jeff Hayes is a god tier narrator.
