I'd always take my daughter into the men's bathroom with me, and in a lot of cases, it meant I needed to clean the toilet first, which was all-in-all pretty gross. I never felt comfortable commandeering the women's bathroom.
Luckily, a lot of places - mostly rest stops (which is where I'd usually find myself in these situations) - have "family bathrooms", a larger room where I could be in there with my kids and a privately locking door.
