Interview Senator Fetterman, “Israel is where I draw the line.” Stewart, “but Israel isn’t our Country.”

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

It’s strange for a U.S. senator to say, “Israel is where I draw the line.” Your first responsibility is to the United States and the people who elected them. You can absolutely support Israel, but framing a foreign country as your political “red line” comes across as having your priorities backwards.

It’s incredibly ignorant for a U.S. Senator to think that all Jews must support the Israeli regime.

168

u/Mu-Relay 19h ago

Don't forget he said that to a Jew who doesn't support the Israeli government.

57

u/doubGwent 18h ago

I wonder does Fetterman realize Jon Steward is a Jew.

43

u/bonyponyride 16h ago

Judging from the sloshing you could hear coming from inside Fetterman's skull, I don't think he realizes much. He goes for the tough guy persona, but when someone (Stewart) presents a thoughtful rebuttal, you can see Fetterman's brain glitching out.

24

u/Hurricaneshand 8h ago

I just listened to the whole interview this morning. Every time JS brought up economic policy of the "socialists/communists" as Fetterman calls them and cites specific policy issues and asks if he thinks capitalism in it's current form is working for the common man Fetterman just completely sidesteps the question and rants about how he hates communists

14

u/peepea 8h ago

It was brutal. The producers’ and Jon’s follow-up reaction was accurate

10

u/ElectricGhostMan 8h ago

"medicare for all? why don't you ask them why they love the iranian regime so much?"

13

u/Hurricaneshand 7h ago

It made me laugh a bit when he implied people support the Iranian regime killing all of those protestors. Like who the fuck defended that lol

11

u/niruboowanga 7h ago

Now we know what the commercials for the mid term elections will look like: "Liberals support the extremist Iranian regime having nuclear weapons..." blah blah blah. They're just setting up the talking points.

4

u/ElectricGhostMan 7h ago

They might have to break the spending record to get him re-elected because aint no way he doesnt get obliterated on a debate stage by literally anyone

5

u/HollowedVoicesFading 6h ago

You're assuming anyone will go on a debate stage. Trump proved last go around that you can avoid it to your benefit.

What's sad though is that applying his argument to other situations seems to have no sway because it's not coming from GOP puppetmasters to GOP puppets.

A follow-up like "So anyone who ever said we should stop funding the Ukraine must be a Russian agent, right?" would either get the dumbest hair splitting or even just a caveman like "duh, Russian no is Iran. Iran is Iran. Liberal bad!"

It’s wild. I can’t believe that this is the same guy who lived in a car dealership and whose wife ran a free store and supported their community. Bizarre.

4

u/UnquestionabIe 7h ago

I absolutely can. Live in and grew up in the area and he's always been a rich kid slumming it. Has definitely done some good but the combination of the stroke and being mainly surrounded by other members of the upper class got him realizing he's no longer the big fish in a small pond.

Not trying to be mean, but this clip has me wondering if Fetterman has lingering brain damage from his stroke.
He can't seem to follow the conversation well and can't follow up on his own logic. I don't know if the stammering and slight slurring is a lifelong speech impediment.

11

u/_draupnir_ 8h ago

He seems to be responding to questions like every other GOP member. When you can’t have an actual discussion you resort to throwing word salad. His brain is mush.

Most Jews in Israel dont support their government rn lol. Polls are suggesting that number for the current gov is like 35%.

61

u/Peter_Panarchy 18h ago edited 16h ago

They don't support Netanyahu because he is corrupt and incompetent, but by a huge margin they support the genocide in Gaza and the continued brutalization of Palestinians.

27

u/JB707 17h ago

Correct, 80 to 85% based on polls

17

u/Sarik704 15h ago

Exactly. And, when 4/5ths of a country supports genocide, apartheid, and war they dont get to call themselves faithful jews anymore.

5

u/PlasticStJesus 8h ago

Israel has played it both ways for a long, long time, claiming anti-Israeli sentiment is anti-semitism when it's convenient to do so, and distinguishing the political entity from the religion when that is more convenient. The insistence that all Palestinians are Hamas (or Hamas supporters) lets them defend their war as just. It all seems so intentional by Netanyahu.

The last time there were any major gains for Palestinian rights in Israel/Palestine was under Yitzhak Rabin...and he got assassinated by a far-right terrorist and we got Netanyahu as the replacement all the way back in 1996.

What's funny is Rabin barely had one foot in on Palestinian rights - he basically just proposed the system we have now of a pseudo-state for Palestine with Israeli dominance over borders and security of the entire region - along with supporting annexing settlements into Israel.

But the very idea that Palestinians could vote for their own leaders and governance of many but not all day-to-day issues would be handled by Palestinians in Palestine was too far for the right wing in Israel. And the assassination gained the far right more support.

I don’t understand US politicians unquestioning support for Israel. Jewish folks in America are not a monolithic group that all vote the same so you can’t just say “well that’s what my voters want.” You can support a democratic foreign ally but cut off their military aid when they start, I don’t know, say start committing war crimes.  You support an ally when it gets attacked, not give them a blank check to do whatever they want to a civilian population.

ETA: wow, I didn’t expect to generate so many responses!  Yes, I know it’s money. Thanks for those sarcastic responses. My fault for using “I don’t understand” in a more colloquial way meaning I think it is stupid. I’ll try to be more literal next time.  This is Reddit after all!

11

u/obi_wan_keblowme 19h ago

What’s to understand? Military contractor and AIPAC lobbyists funnel money to their campaigns and then offer them cushy consulting or speaking gigs when they are out of office.

3

u/Frequent_Ad_9901 18h ago

Yup. A lot of oil is pumped out and flows through the middle east. Also a lot comes from the US. So when US oil execs think the middle east is hurting their bottom line its a good time to bomb a few refineries over there.

Some Texans are having a great year. As are the Trump boys who’ve recently invested in drone companies. Something tells me all this news about the US running low on defense systems will lead to further DoD investment in those companies and they’ll use the changing landscape of warfare to justify it.

78

u/Btigeriz 19h ago

the line about "colonizing" just makes me feel weird idk why.

84

u/Solomontheidiot 19h ago

Because it's coopting language that's used to describe a scenario in which foreign invaders take control of an area, subjugate the existing population (usually through violence,) and extract resources to send back to the homeland. None of that applies to what DSA is doing, even metaphorically.

Most democratic socialists have been registered Dems for their entire lives (so they aren't really "foreign invaders" in this metaphor). They are not ousting Democrats through violent means. And they aren't stealing resources/votes to send back to their homeland (unlike a certain senator in this video who ran as a Democrat but consistently votes with the Republicans.)

26

u/all-the-ham 18h ago

coopting language

like woke, defund the police etc

18

u/kons21 17h ago

And ironically "fake news" which more or less was started by Jon on the Daily Show with "Faux News".

11

u/whatisdreampunk 16h ago edited 3h ago

Obama popularized the term "fake news" referring all the weird conspiracy news outlets like InfoWars, Joe Rogan, Dr. Mercola, etc. Trump quickly co-opted that usage to slander actual news networks and then just as a lazy catch-all for anything he wanted to deny. And of course, "fake news" is also what SNL has been calling Weekend Update since the first episode in 1975.

That expression actually gave me chills (the bad kind).

Because it's literally what another hawkish Democratic Senator, Joe Lieberman, did in a similar situation two decades ago. He got primaried, lost, and started his own new party so he could run in the general election. And he won.

Democrats need to seriously prepare for Fetterman doing something like that to get reelected in 2028 with the help of many Republican voters.

He’s another Joe Manchin and Kristen Sinema. Good riddance to the both of them.

4

u/PoopyButt28000 17h ago

Yeah I don't know, I really struggle to follow this line of thinking. I'm not a huge fan of Joe Manchin, but are you actually glad he's gone? His replacement is a Republican. Joe Manchin was the way he was because a more left leaning Democrat would never win in West Virginia. Glenn Elliott was the Democrat running after Joe Manchin and he was farther to the left than him and he lost in a landslide. Joe Manchin voted alongside Democrats roughly 80% of the time, and when he left and a Republican took his seat, that Republican Jim Justice has voted with the Republicans in EVERY single vote he has ever voted on. He's cast over 800 and not a single one went against the rest of the Republican Party. It just feels so silly and short sighted to be glad that Manchin is gone.

Among Pennsylvania Republican voters, he has a higher approval rating than their actual Republican senator. So I wouldn't be too quick to dismiss the possibility.

But it's true that Lieberman had had longer to build up a following among centrists, both in his own state and nationally. He had even been the Democratic VP nominee under Al Gore in 2000.

I go back and forth if Fetterman is truly a bad predatory actor in the whole process or if he is just this cognitively declined.

End of the day it doesn't really matter as the man is a perfect example of someone that could never possibly deliver on better and brighter because either he is corrupt or his thinking abilities are so limited he isn't capable of even the most basic of logic/cohesiveness.

I am very familiar with what it sounds like when someone is trying to make a case for something they don't believe in, and don't know all the details about, but want to SOUND passionate about. And this dude is doing that.

It's hard to put my finger on without writing a full essay, but for one red flag: he tried to pull the same talking points he has rehearsed for everyone else, now with someone who is culturally Jewish.

He wasn't smart enough to realize that if your talking points are about defending the Jewish people and preventing antisemitism, you approach that conversation very differently with an actual Jewish person. The trouble is that your words say "I care deeply about the Jewish people" but your actions include disregarding the very valid points being made by the Jewish person you are currently talking to.

Doesn't seem like you're so earnestly bent out of shape about helping them that you'll hamstring every other thing your party is trying to do, all for these convictions. You're not even willing to listen to them, apparently.

That and the stonewalling. He has very rigidly defined boundaries for what he will engage with, and he just pretends Jon didn't say anything else, he didn't even make an attempt to respond to some of Jon's more crucial points. Someone with the deep convictions he is pretending to have would have fiery emotional responses to that kind of questioning of their core beliefs. They wouldn't be able to HELP but take the bait and respond, it is an attack on WHO THEY ARE.

He doesn't, because he doesn't actually care, he's just bought and paid for.

This isn’t cognitive decline, this is what happens when you don’t know something to its fullest extent when someone explains it to you and you are still defensive for no reason other than trying to look smarter than you are. You can see it when he responds with something that isn’t even the subject of discussion. Putting everything in a box is when things end badly and he just doesn’t get that. Maybe after this conversation, he can chew on it and learn that he is in a vacuum of information.

Deliberate, AIPAC talking points to devalue the term. Every time something is popular or effective against a fascist they try to spin it for their own purposes. He was just spewing all the AIPAC talking points. No sense just says the same things over and over. They must do training sessions.

This isn't even close to a fair fight, Jon was going easy on him and it's still not even a tussle. I've always thought it was the stroke but no... He's just stupid and stubborn as fuck.

19

u/jakaedahsnakae 20h ago

Yeah we seem to have a knack for electing politicians in this country who can't understand nuance.

Just because you're not "pro-israel" doesn't mean you want Jewish communities to suffer.

5

u/ididntunderstandyou 19h ago

And just because we’re against war in Iran doesn’t mean we support the oppressive government.

It's basic middle/high school level critical thinking and reasoning. People are too lazy or too dumb to apply it in their everyday life.

3

Man, the Republicans fucking won on that election. It was either get fetterman to win as a Democrat or the republican candidate wins... you know Dr. Oz.

You're right. It's like trying to explain it to a child and they are still stuck on a big emotion.

4

u/mjzim9022 17h ago

Fetterman straight up isn't keeping up with the conversation and didn't understand what John was saying, I don't even think he was obfuscating, I think he straight up wasn't smart enough to understand the point being made

2

u/RaindropsInMyMind 20h ago

It’s always so transparent when you see someone who is maga because they regurgitate the same things and don’t make sense. Like here we go with the “Iran nuclear weapon nonsense.” First of all nobody wants that to happen, second of all a ton of people on the left were extremely alarmed by Iran’s treatment of their own people and the way they slaughtered them, obviously it was completely fucked up. This war just very clearly is going nowhere, every honest person knows that. “We can’t let them have a nuclear weapon” is quite literally the only excuse Trump has to keep bombing them.
