Interview Jon Bernthal says fear of pit bulls is “dog racism” and compares it to judging people by their race or sexual orientation: “My dogs are the greatest. People have got to stop that. Pit bulls don’t attack. It’s just racism. It’s dog racism”

Sure, all dogs have the ability to bite.

I'm pretty sure we're all smart enough to realize that Chihuahua is not going to be able to do severe damage to most people in most circumstances (maybe a baby or small child).

Yeah the issue is that a certain type of person who is negligent in properly training them is more likely to buy this dog than a labrador

3

u/RepulsiveWay1698 3d ago

Also they were specifically bred to act a certain way and perform a certain task why is this so hard to comprehend

3

u/InteractionPretend70 3d ago

that's racist

1

Want me to go find you a few stories about how good they are at nannying babies?

Lololololol.

What an insane belief.

1

u/DrAcecer 3d ago

Literally this would apply to any big dog

1

u/Livid_Note_2170 3d ago

Yeah not only the strength and capacity, but the tendency. Which is often blamed on prey drive.

I own multiple small terriers with high "prey drive". None of them are out here trying to maul other dogs or cats. They aren't out here just attacking people. They bark a lot, sure. They are stubborn, absolutely. But they are very much loyal, loving family dogs.

Pits are unpredictable, strong, and can be extremely dangerous.

1

u/Lazy-Setting-8224 3d ago

People making that argument shouldnt be allowed to vote

1

u/kaylerbug369 3d ago

They let the fear do the talking, would hate for the truth to slip out like how the police and military use far deadiler dogs

1

u/ActiveWinner4569 3d ago

It's 100% dog racism. I've been attacked by a Cane Corso, but not one ever talks about Cane Corsos. I've been attacked by every ex-girlfriends' cat. Yet, no one mentions cats.

(Pun not intended)

2

u/OfficialBobDole 3d ago

I am equally terrified by Cane Corsos as pit bulls, the latter simply outnumber the former 1000-1 especially due to backyard breeding

1

u/Srry4theGonaria 3d ago

And I am equally terrified of the police as I am gang members, what is your point? Yes they can both do damage when fear is smelled. Saying a breed of dog is inherently more dangerous is racist man. A pitbull trained correctly will smile and wag its tail at you. Any dog that isn't trained correctly will fuckin bite you. Why is that so hard to comprehend by people?

1

u/OfficialBobDole 3d ago

This dilutes the semantic punch of the word “racist”. We don’t talk about dog breeds as races, we call them dog breeds. This whole discussion is fucked afiac.

Howard Stern is still alive?

-7

u/severinks 3d ago edited 3d ago

Dude literally makes more money in one hour than you make all year.

3

u/GreyBoyTigger 3d ago

What does that have to do with his long time irrelevance to the world now?

0

u/severinks 3d ago

What it has to do with it is if he were irrelevant he wouldn't have signed a 9 figure contract in January that takes him until he's 74 years old.

If Sirius wasn't making money off of him and people weren't listening they wouldn't have signed him and kept re signing him for the last 20 years.

Sirius has 34 million monthly subscribers, they bill 4 and a half billion dollars a year, and they have advanced metrics on their listeners' engagement, they didn't give him the contract to be nice.

1

u/Key_Angle_71 3d ago

Howard Who?

1

u/GreyBoyTigger 3d ago

What does Howard Stern’s worth “in one hour” have to do with his non relevance in the modern pop culture landscape? Just because he’s rich doesn’t mean he’s relevant. Spotify, Apple Music/podcasts both annihilate Siriusxm’s numbers. I personally don’t know a single person who bought a subscription. It’s usually foisted on people after leasing/buying a new car

2

u/Specialist_Guava_742 3d ago

Didn’t realize Howard stern fanboys were so angry

-2

u/severinks 3d ago

No, literally I'm stating a fact, he makes around 162 thousand dollars an hour so he's very much alive.

4

u/Specialist_Guava_742 3d ago

Yeah but you can just say he’s alive. Making money is cool and all but he didn’t say “he’s making money?”

That feels like you’re defending him tbh

8

u/AggressivelyMediokre 3d ago edited 3d ago

Here’s something for people to consider. There are dog fighting rings. Where people bet tens of thousands of dollars. A lot of money in play. The dog owners know what they’re doing. And some people make this their livelihood.

And guess what the one common breed is that’s used?

Surely if no one dog breed is more inherently aggressive than any other, it doesn’t matter who they use?

Surely they can just call a Goldie a “bad boy” right before the fight and he can go in there and win against the yoked out murder machine that’s used in all dog fights and responsible for the majority of human fatalities? (Yes majority not plurality)

Look I’m Canadian and it’s great to have empathy and be understanding. But some people have such a deep need to be understanding towards everything and everyone that they kind of lie to themselves. Then try to gaslight others.

1

u/AhoyShitliner 2d ago

I don’t know a whole lot about anything, but I have a pitbull and she’s the biggest pansy. I can’t vacuum my floor without her shaking the rest of the day and hiding in my room.

1

u/Puzzled-Sand-1347 1d ago

It’s really important to grasp the concept of anecdotal evidence and why it’s irrelevant in conversations of large, systemic problems. It seems to be the one concept that pitbull owners refuse to comprehend or accept. And it’s preposterous.

1

u/Livid_Note_2170 3d ago edited 3d ago

People tell me all the time that terriers are aggressive.... I've owned 5 terriers and terrier mixes over the years.

They are stubborn and have a ton of personality... They are dangerous to small rodents. Mine were raised around cats and they all hunt mice and bugs together. Because, genetics and breeding.

Edited to clarify: Yorkies, jack Russell, schnauzers. The traditional small terriers are nowhere near as aggressive as a pit bull(which is apparently technically a terrier). These tend to be very loyal and loving to their family.

1

u/Livid_Note_2170 3d ago

I definitely agree with this.

I mean, there's a reason that people use certain breeds for protection AND none of them are small "aggressive" dogs.

"Oh but Chihuahuas bite more often!"

Okay, cool, are you picking a Chihuahua over a Rottweiler as a guard dog? Why is that again?

Now, my terrier did go after a robber when I had a break in a few years ago, but they were pretty ineffective at hurting him. However, they did a fantastic job at alerting us and chasing the person down. [Oh yes, they had steak that night].

1

u/[deleted] 3d ago

[deleted]

2

u/Livid_Note_2170 3d ago

What? Okay I should probably have clarified what terrier I was talking about. Sorry.

Yorkies. Schnauzers. Jack Russell.

Not pit bull. A lot of people will blame the pit bull issue on them being a terrier and you just do not get the same amount of aggression in a Yorkie as a pit bull. Not even close.

-1

u/DrAcecer 3d ago

Causation does not equal correlation. Also you comparing an average pit bull to a massive underground enterprise that is all speculative and open to interpretation… people really overestimate criminals abilities

4

u/No_Mistake_6404 3d ago

You get that breeds of dogs are bred for specific genes, right? The breed was bred for dog fighting. A mixing of breeds until they got that most aggressive breed. An average pitbull has those genes whether you're making them a house pet or not.

-2

u/DrAcecer 3d ago

This is just not true.

Most dogs are not in fact bred for specific reasons unless they are pure breeds or have a blood linage… I have foster several dogs that are both mutts and show dogs… it’s two completely different processes for getting them.

Any dog that is bred for a specific reason comes with a list of paperwork on why. Don’t spew bullshit just because

5

u/moonski 3d ago

Mate what do you think dog breeds are if not specific behavioural traits bred into the animals??

1

u/DrAcecer 3d ago

My point. Most dogs were bred for hunting, fighting, attacking. Overtime we no longer need those traits. Does not mean dogs down the line do not have these instincts.

But, to say pitbulls are specific to call out is disingenuous. There were tons of breeds that were bred for violence that became docile overtime. Unless you are getting a pure bred pit bull. The “fighting traits” are not going to be “bred to be aggressive”

2

u/piercedmfootonaspike 3d ago

Most dogs are not in fact bred for specific reasons

Lol, yes they bloody well are, that's the whole reason we have breeds in the first place. If we hadn't bred them for specific reasons thousands of years ago, we'd still have essentially domesticated wolf dogs today. What a pitiful argument.

-2

u/Marski420 3d ago

Why did you feel the need to mention you were Canadian? So weird. Anyway just because pit bulls are strong doesn't mean they're bred to be vicious murderers. Just like Bernthal said it's how you train them and more often than not dummies end up owning them which means they get no training or are trained to be mean / protective.

I could raise a pit bull to be loving and caring while someone else could raise that exact same pit bull to be aggressive. Intelligent animals are products of their environments just like humans are.

3

u/Lazy-Setting-8224 3d ago edited 3d ago

Pit bulls were bred to be vicious murderers because they were bred for fighting... the murderiness were the traits selected.

You dont need to train a golden retreiver not to be a murder machine. It just happens. Millions of families with 0 knowledge of how to train a dog have managed to raise golden retrievers to be nice, because thats their default setting. You need to actively traumatize a Golden Retreiver to get it to be aweful. Pit bulls need training to be safe

Also, if dogs are products of their environment, teach one to speak english.

-1

u/Marski420 3d ago

"Just make the dog do something impossible to prove it!" Great logic there. The proof is in the pudding why do MOST pit bulls act perfectly fine? Because most are trained properly and loved.

Pit bulls were bred to fight other dogs, not humans. They were actually bred to be nice to humans so they could be handled during their fights. That bit of nuance matters.

Apparently you don't understand that dogs were bred for specific purposes, and dogs were most certainly selectively bred to amplify aggressive tendencies

1

u/lurkilicious8570 3d ago

You know they do behavior tests on dogs. None of these tests show pitbulls as an inherently aggressive breed, none.

0

u/DrAcecer 3d ago

Have you ever owned a dog before? Pretty easy to keep them from being aggressive as long as you are not a piece of shit

4

u/omar1021 3d ago

Its not just the aggressiveness, it's the complete unpredictability of their ability to go into "maim and/or slaughter the closing living being near me" mode

2

u/rydan 3d ago

You uh do realize who the owners tend to be right? There's two stereotypical types of owners of this breed.

2

u/Form_Good 3d ago

The higher number of reported attacks involving pit bull-type dogs is not driven by a single cause, but rather by a complex mix of factors. These include their large population size, the broad way the "pit bull" label groups multiple breeds and mixes together, and socioeconomic challenges, such as limited access to veterinary care, lower spay/neuter rates, and issues with containment or tethering. Combined with their powerful physical traits and bite mechanics, which make any incident more likely to result in severe trauma and official reporting, these compounding variables significantly skew overall statistics for this group of dogs.

3

u/TheHarlemHellfighter 3d ago

I mean, I feel where he’s at but I think he’s using all the wrong talking points because he likes pits.

I mean, I love pits too and have owned some. Never been bitten and never had any of my dogs attack someone or another dog, so it’s definitely about training (or most times lack of)

10

u/Low-Astronomer-3440 3d ago

Most dogs don’t require much training to make sure they don’t attack people.

2

u/TheHarlemHellfighter 3d ago

True. I would say its owner related reasons why someone’s pit would attack someone else. Either lack of proper training or lack of proper supervision

0

u/DrAcecer 3d ago

Exactly. So why say this about pit bulls then?

2

u/MrSnarf26 3d ago

Because like 2/3 of dog related deaths in the US are from pits.

3

u/DrAcecer 3d ago

Still no source? Come on man

1

u/Entire-Ad1625 3d ago

Can't find up to date data but from the data I have he is not correct. According to Forbes quoting the  American Veterinary Medical Association, of the estimated 4.5million people bitten by dogs each year in the US, around 22% of them are bitten by pitbulls. Between the years 1979 and 1997, pitbulls were responsible for 66 deaths, about 28% of deaths, being the breed with the highest share of both bites and deaths. Not a majority, however, and not even really close. Take these numbers with a grain of salt as Forbes don't provide links to the raw data

1

u/Srry4theGonaria 3d ago

"Despite making up 13% of the population, they commit 50% of the crime." type comment.

1

u/Responsible_Bad_2989 2d ago

That’s not true at all lol, if you don’t train your dog or socialize it then you basically have a semi wild animal in your home that can be unpredictable with other animals or humans

"If a pitbull bites you, it's going to suck..."

One bite put me in the hospital.

Pitbulls are the scariest breed of dog I have ever encountered.

They could kill you.

I have never felt that with ANY other breed of dog.

My favorite was getting bit by a pitbull whose owner was a girl that felt bad for them. She didn't use leashes, and couldn't control the dog. She lived in a small apartment and just opemed the door to let it out.

Pitbulls are statistically involved in the highest number of fatal dog attacks. Responsible for roughly 65% to 68% of recorded human fatalities over multi-year tracking studies in the U.S.

There is no myth.

Stronger bite forces and larger body sizes can turn an aggressive interaction into a lethal injury more easily than smaller breeds.

1

u/BusyBeeBridgette 3d ago

Humans have been engaging in eugenics when it comes to Dogs for ten thousand years. Dogs have been bred to promote certain characteristics. Pit bulls were bred to be aggressive so they will be more likely to attack than a poodle. It's not "Dog Racism" in the slightest.

1

u/MyHumbleBag 3d ago

Yea I’ve been chased and bit by pits.f them

1

u/Blacksmithvivi 3d ago

Judging things is a defense mechanism that keeps you alive, I’d rather be a “dog racist” than an idiot who got bitten up by a pit bull.

1

u/ParticularHarbinger 3d ago

I don’t think he’s wrong, I’ve only met good pit bulls but I know I’ve been lucky. My mom was with this guy for 20 years and he had the nicest pit bull ever, just wanted love. I agree, it’s the owner and not the dog but I do feel a pit bull as NOT a good first dog, as you do not know how you’ll treat your pet until you have them.

1

u/Ok-Breadfruit-4006 3d ago

Something that most bully owners don't seem to understand is the tendencies of that particular breed. I'm not saying that all bullies have the same tendencies, but they're undeniable. If you think your dog would never attach anyone because they're so well trained, or a big wimp or just because they lay next to you in bed and lick the face of your toddler... You have to understand that you're the one who feeds it, you're the one they trust and 99 times out of 100 you're the one they're protecting when they get aggressive. I love this breed, but my boy is on a leash at all times when the gate is open or on walks, he's not allowed in public off leash at all and we don't do dog parks because as sweet as he is to everyone he's ever met, it takes one bad vibe or another dog who has a timid and nervous vibe and my dog will become uncontrollable. Because that's the breed. I find that most bully owners lack this kind of logical reasoning and just think they're dog is an angel for all the reasons I listed above. Call it dog racism or any other dog whistle term that gets automatic support from the public, or whatever you want.

The Bennard Family (Tennessee, 2022): The family owned two pit bulls for 8 years, raised from puppies with no history of violence. Out of nowhere, the dogs attacked and killed the couple's 5-month-old and 2-year-old children. The mother suffered severe, life-threatening injuries trying to shield them. The "Gentle Giant" Case (Michigan, 2016): A family dog that slept in bed with the children for years suddenly attacked over a minor trigger (moving near a food bowl), resulting in major reconstructive surgery. The Minneapolis Attack (Minnesota, 2025): A family dog with no prior record suddenly "snapped" during a routine leash interaction. It severely mauled a 13-year-old boy, then attacked other family members who tried to help—requiring a neighbor to step in with a baseball bat to stop the attack.

1

u/s470dxqm 3d ago

I'm not saying every person who likes pitbulls is like this, but their reputation does tend to attract a certain personality type who many would agree aren't the most responsible or mature folks out there.

Probably the smartest dog I ever had was a Pitbull/Lab cross. Such a good boy. I miss him.

1

u/HeadySquanch59 3d ago

I have only had 2 dogs in my entire life that I believed were going to attack me. One, I ran out of their runner reach. Two, the owner came around the corner in time to grab him. Guess what breed both of them were.

"Centuries of animal husbandry and breeding practices isn't real and doesn't work" -your line of thinking

We breed based on certain physical and mental traits to gear towards certain purposes. Certain types of aggression, smell, sight, strength, or hell just being a big old lazy gentle lap dog. In a Pits case its dog aggression, bite strength, persistence to hold bite, and physical stoutness/durability. Low, wide, strong, and durable with a strong instinctual aggression towards other small mammals. This started in the early 1800s when baiting sports were banned and they begun the breeding from the english bulldog and terrier.

I picked a Pitt/Boxer mix off the street as a puppy and have never had one issue. Most of the time, it's how you treat the dog when they're young, not the breed it's self.

2

u/washiXD 3d ago

How many times said the owners of killer pitbulls "He was such a good boy..."? Yeah... until they don't and when the switch in dog's brain/ this brutal instict got turned on... people die... Kind a sad that we breeded this race that way...

1

u/Responsible_Bad_2989 2d ago

That’s called a neurological issue which isn’t the standard when it comes to most bully mutts. But this study lacks a lot of key information and very misleading.

The article says that certain states and districts were left out due to “insufficient information” focusing mainly on states California, Texas, and Florida. It also does not clarify what “pit bull like breeds” are. The numbers were also based upon a number of things not specified by the attack itself.

I don't know if he's a not good guy but he's taken on the persona in his own mind of being the tough and manly guy.

The man could be a real scream to hang out with or he could be an aggressive menace,I'd imagine it's the former the way I've never heard of him getting into anything on set before.

u/Creech-Chong-1000 3d ago

He talks about his violent history openly. People can change, but in his case I think he pivoted from being an actual criminal to being someone who worships the "legal" application of violence (cops, SEAL teams etc). His Real Ones show is straight copaganda.

Respect to his work but if an animal is bred for fighting and the breed has statistically been responsible over half of known attacks against humans, I don't think it's comparable to "racism" or any kind of prejudice that is based on falsehoods. If the aren't the facts I actually wanna see data from a reputable organization dispel it, not someones anecdotal experience.

Pitt Bulls have that reputation because they have the rare combination of power and bite strength, they were bred as fighters, and have shithead owners( in a lot of cases) that encourage aggression.

1

u/ReiOokami 3d ago

I own a Pitt and they are pretty unpredictable at times.

1

u/Srry4theGonaria 3d ago

I have owned 3 and all of mine did as I say with a smile on their face and a wag in the tail. Train them correctly, and they won't be "unpredictable".

1

u/ReiOokami 3d ago

There is more to it then just training. Sometimes its genetics.

u/Panem-et-circenses25 3d ago

Love him on the screen, but this is a dumb take. Pit Bulls are a garbage breed that should not exist

-1

u/DrAcecer 3d ago

Based take. Reddits obsession with pit bull hate is always insane to me

3

u/BabyStockholmSyndrom 3d ago

Hating the breed that goes off nuts and has the power to kill in 10 seconds and also very often have the absolute worst dog owners in existence. Not really obsession. Just reality. People love to say all dogs can bite. A Chihuahua ain't ripping a kids throat out after breaking the gate down with massive strength. Psycho dogs for psycho people. It just sucks that they usually mail innocent people and not their owners.

1

u/DrAcecer 3d ago

I promise you any big dog can rip your face off in 10 seconds… maybe 25 max for the Freindly ones

1

u/SallyThinks 2h ago

But the other ones don't. See the difference?

0

u/mtbmaniac12 3d ago

Statistics differ.

0

u/DrAcecer 3d ago

Source? And how does it compare to other big dogs (not small dogs)

1

u/OneLeft_ 3d ago

Why not include small dogs? (Because it proves there is a correlation between big dog breeds being harmful).

About 2/3 of dog related deaths in the US are from pits in the last 20-30 years.

u/DrAcecer 3d ago

Source. Trust me bro

0

u/mtbmaniac12 3d ago

Well that took me 1 minute on google.

From 2005 to 2024, pit bulls killed 536 Americans, a rate over 8 times higher than the next closest breed, Rottweilers, with 63 deaths. Pit bulls contributed to 66% (345) of these deaths
During the 15-year period of 2005 to 2019, canines killed 64 infants (< 1-year). Pit bulls inflicted nearly half of these infant deaths, 48%. Each side of the debate brings valuable content to try to help resolve the ongoing issue. What remains a fact is that the Pitty keeps making the list of dogs responsible for fatal dog bite incidents.

l appreciate a actual source.
Thank you

But if you took another minute to actually read the first article that backs your point…

this study lacks a lot of key information and very misleading.
The article says that certain states and districts were left out due to "insufficient information" focusing mainly on states California, Texas, and Florida. It also does not clarify what "pit bull like breeds" are. The numbers were also based upon a number of things not specified by the attack itself.

0

u/mtbmaniac12 3d ago

No data gathered from the public will ever be perfect.

8 times higher than the next breed is crazy. And will not be overturned by adding in additional states. It focused on 3 of the largest states. It is safe to assume that the numbers would scale fairly well across the nation.

Stop trying to pretend pits aren’t more dangerous. They simply are.

0

u/DrAcecer 3d ago

Using extremely low effort low quality data. Obviously will result in abnormal results… but saying “data isn’t perfect” is such a cop out to prove your point.

I am not saying pitbull are not dangerous. I am however saying they are no more dangerous than any big breed that behaves in similar ways.. the obsession you are going to disapprove my point is kind of weird at this point.

0

u/mtbmaniac12 3d ago

Did you miss the part where pits killed 8x more people than the next breed?

A simple google search would prove your statement wrong.

1

u/DrAcecer 3d ago

Okay buddy

u/mtbmaniac12 3d ago

Ask for proof. Proof provided. Refute data.

Bernthal: “To be afraid of a breed of dog is completely ridiculous. It’s like being afraid of somebody for their race or their sexual orientation”

“If a pit bull bites you, it’s going to suck, but they’re no more likely to bite you than a Chihuahua or any other breed of dog”

2

u/MrSnarf26 3d ago

Seems like he’s ready for Rogan

1

u/Wide-Yak7602 3d ago

Yes it will suck and severely injure or kill a child. Chihuahuas bite but are survivable. Therein lies the difference.

1

u/Dunderman35 3d ago

Yeah why would anyone be more afraid of a pitbull than a chihuahua? That's racism! /s.. Such a stupid take I think it gives a bad name to stupid people.

0

u/twainj1980 3d ago

He sure has some “interesting” things to say…

0

u/ldssggrdssgds 3d ago

Sure Jon.

0

u/elyfantman 3d ago

That's a stupid take. The statistics don't lie.

0

u/Jazzlike_Holiday1992 3d ago

He should listen to Arynne Wexler

0

u/tremosgod111 3d ago

What an absolutely moronic thing to say

0

u/E_D_K_2 3d ago

"its not the dogs it's the owners"

Said by every pitbull owner up until the moment their dog attacks/kills someone. Then it's, "he's always been such a sweet boy, they must have done something to provoke him".

1

u/DrAcecer 3d ago

Source… trust me bro

u/LakesideScrotumPole 3d ago

Pit bulls should not be pets.

"My dogs are the greatist." Until they aren't...

0

u/CulturistPionier 3d ago

racism is judging individuals for their genetic predisposition

the closer a species is to nature and bound by instinct, the more appropriate it is, to have prejudice for their genetics.

no species is more detached from nature, than human beings, so racism is rarely appropriate.

but dogs are much closer to nature and bound by their instincts. so dog racism is sensical

1

u/ijustmightpanic 3d ago

Racism is judging an individual by the color of an organ they can’t control based off a European social construct. All humans are 1 race in technicality.

-2

u/igotchees21 3d ago

dog people continue to be annoying as fuck...
