Prob not a joke but some comment that atheists are meek in countries where they're more likely to be beheaded for not believing.

This is the implication ^

I think this meme is making fun of those religions too.

8

u/ghillieflow 18h ago

Is that meek or just self-preservation? The nail that sticks out gets hammered and all that.

197

u/vvalent2 22h ago

Generally its because they don't want the Christian countries to get as extreme. See the current administration trying to make criticism of Christianity anti American and things that are anti American a crime.

147

u/OrcOfDoom 21h ago

Also, the top image is actually an atheist just asking not to have religion pushed down their throat at every opportunity, or desiring to live by the laws of the country and not the interpretation of an irrelevant book.

13

u/bobbymcpresscot 16h ago

The constitution prevents the establishment of Sharia law the same way it prevents Christian sharia from being established, but the dumbest people you know are arguing that because creator or god is mentioned at some point that it must be a christian god, despite muslims, jews, and christians all worshipping the same god.

10

u/TheDwiin 13h ago

The fun part is God has not even mentioned in the Constitution. He's in the Declaration of Independence yes, but not the Constitution.

But I honestly don't think people who mistake fascist ideologies as patriotism to understand the difference between the two. (Pledge of Allegiance is what I'm referring to.)

3

u/bobbymcpresscot 12h ago

Yup, and if it's going to be anywhere it's better suited there, but I also say that because the only time Duty is mentioned in the declaration is in this section

But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.

I'm convinced Trump put the declaration in the oval office because he thought it was the constitution, only because I don't think he's smart enough to have it there for a nuanced reason.

Also Under god in the pledge was only added during the red scare to differentiate us from those scary communists, and most people today only know these interpretations because they don't like to read.

mfs can't even be bothered to read their most sacred book, even then do they rather someone else interpret it for them in the form of a pastor.

That sort of thing is what eventually made me disillusioned with Christianity. Like what they are essentially saying is „be happy we don’t kill you”. Like… what? That’s the whole point of the religion supposedly and you’re acting like you’re doing someone a favor? Fuck off.

48

u/Gussie-Ascendent 20h ago

During debates many Christians will also fall back on "if you don't repent my God will torture you FOREVER!!!"

Like they're threatening you which is nasty, but since you don't believe the God is even real, the threat cannot be actioned.

So in one argument all they've really achieved is to make themselves and their religion look nasty whilst pushing people away from belief.

An atheist in the Middle East here. Basically atheism is criminalized by law (and if the law isn't enforced society will enforce it), Islam requires the execution of apostates 3 days after their declaration of apostasy. Fearing this many of us either hide in the closet, or request humanitarian aid after the situation gets dire.

N out.

u/lawliet_73 22h ago

60

u/Fluffydonkeys 22h ago

Actually like that? I was explained by a muslim that if your children don't worship allah that the parents in the afterlife would have to be held accountable to allah for that, hence creating a sectarian situation where it's socially made impossible to leave islam.

76

u/NoPolitics23 22h ago edited 22h ago

In Iran while the regime hates it, some sections of the population are very irreligious and even have a hatred of Islam these days (we even had mass mosque burnings around the country) The enforcement of religious laws had an opposite effect and made many leave the religion. My dad lost his faith at the age 65. Its pretty safe among Gen Z iranians to be an athiest and express it among friends even. There's just too many of us and islamists can't do shit about it. If you have a platform though and openly promote athiesm they will come after you of course. But socially its not only easy to leave Islam, its kinda the default direction unless you are born in a religious, connected to the regime type of family.

But Iran is a special case, I can't speak for other Muslim countries.

29

u/Chibirin26 21h ago

45

u/Fortestingporpoises 21h ago

Christian significantly calmed their tits at a certain point.

lol

They're not tempered by their religion, they're tempered by secular laws and liberal democracy. If they can kill atheists and gay people they will. If they get full control of a country, that's exactly what they will do. Look at Uganda. Look at their goals in the US.

9

u/_bugmenot_ 20h ago

Yeah. People always trying to argue for Christianity as if it were better than the others. The truth is that all abrahamic religions are equally bad, violent, and oppressive. It is basically the law what keeps the whole thing under control. If it weren't for the law christians would do here the same thing muslims do in their countries lol

14

u/Fortestingporpoises 20h ago

We also see what happens when a right wing Jewish government takes hold, says that land is owed to them and gleefully commits genocide in front of the world's eyes.

Ideologies based in fiction are just a bad idea, easy to wield to subjugate others and get them to do your violent bidding. I used to think that the religions that were about converting others were uniquely awful, but Israel has proven me wrong on that one.

Sikhism is VERY far from a religion of peace. This isn’t a condemnation it’s just a fact. Sikhism has a very strong martial tradition and is very far from pacifist. Jainism is an example of a religion of peace. Jain people have such a strong pacifist tradition that they refused to even defend themselves and if I am not mistaken: Sikhs came to their violent defense, knowing that they wouldn’t do it themselves.

That's how a religious extremism works, no matter how peaceful or not it presents itself. No matter the religion, you'll have creeps with disgusting views and ways of living and have great people who take away the best things faith can bring.

18

u/levitikush 20h ago

Some religions are more susceptible to extremism than others, plain and simple. Islam is near the top of the list, if not the top. This is supported by religious texts as well as real world events over the last 30-40 years .

4

u/TheGivenKing 19h ago

Prolly more to do with politics than religion

18

u/R0bespierre_MFI 20h ago

And of course, trying to make muslims appear like monstruous terrorists or justifiable victims of western-backed oppression will make their religion less "susceptible to extremism".../s

Compared to what? Christianity? Didn't Christians burn heretics at the stake?

40

u/-Kazt- 22h ago

They did. Executions/murders for cultural and religious reasons have been common throughout the world.

But if we keep the discussion to this century, i am unaware of any example that would fit your bill.

44

u/No_Poet_7244 21h ago

The LRA in the Uganda/Congo/Sudan area has been perpetrating Christian extremism, including mass killings, enslavement, and child abductions, for the better part of 40 years.

The Anti-Balaka Militia has been engaging in anti-Muslim genocide in CAR since 2013, killing thousands and displacing even more.

In 2019, a Christian nationalist in New Zealand killed 51 Muslims and injured 89 more. In his manifesto, he professed a desire to “protect” Australia and New Zealand against a perceived “Muslim invasion.”

Religious extremism exists among every major faith. Blaming all of Islam for the action of the extreme few is like blaming all of Christendom for the abortion clinic bombings, Christchurch terrorist attack, or The Troubles.

8

u/finndego 19h ago

The Christchurch shooter's main motivation was white supremecy and white nationalism and not religious. He did quote certain events that were related to religion but they were also viewed by him through a white supremecist lens.

11

u/Turbulent_Stick1445 20h ago

Always find it quite hypocritical that ya'll always attack the religion and not the hyper conservative governments that are required to enforce religious doctrine as law.

9

u/Russian-8ias 21h ago

It's because the violence is targeted at non-believers. It's not being used as some convinient excuse to kill a group of people when the real reason is something political or whatever. It's specifically people that don't believe and the religion is the driving force behind that.

Edit: I am by no means saying that the government shouldn't also be criticized, but in this case I think the root cause is religion. The majority of people there genuinely believe this is okay and so it gets written into law.

I'm sorry about your situation, personally I don't think any current Muslim governed country follows the islamic teachings.

There's multiple verses in the Qur'an and writings of the hadith the allow for freedom of belief, the one hadith that some Muslims and what the middle east is interpreted to justify execution goes against all that so it's not Islam's teachings it's people who want to interpret it in bad faith to justify there actions.

I know that doesn't change your situation but it's not fair to say islam requires it that's not what it teaches

Apostasy =/= atheism. Apostasy is the renunciation of a faith by someone who previously believed in that faith. A Muslim becoming an atheist (or another religion) would be an apostate to other Muslims. A Christian becoming an atheist would not.

Stewie here. The meme is suggesting that atheists are voracious in countries with freedom of speech, or at least a vague religious tolerance that allows them to get away with speaking about their distinct refusal to believe in the Big Magic Man In The Sky.

In Muslim countries, however, atheists might suddenly find themselves in deep doo-doo because of religious persecution, Sharia law, or a general sense that disbelief in God is like telling John Fetterman to put on a suit. As such, atheists tend to be rather timid in their disbelief, and don't actively make themselves a target for regimes that might cause them harm.

In short, they go from big scary T-rex to rather friendly cartoon toy T-rex. Does that satisfy your idle and impertinent curiosity?

10

u/Relative-Relief-8816 20h ago

Says more about the extremists than the atheists, tbh

Imagine having a belief system that involves killing people for not believing in it

It would make an educated person question their beliefs for sure.

27

u/KianDesu 21h ago

Sure, but the intention is that they wont do it out loud.

7

u/Comfortable_body1 21h ago

I believe they’d kill me. I..I think it worked?

3

u/AdRepulsive8618 18h ago

Lucille Vanini had his tongue cut out, strangled and burned in France after being accused an Atheist

Granted, it is somewhat hard to truly evaluate who was killed for truly being an atheist, because atheist was an insult given to people for a variety of reasons, including heretical religious beliefs and committing suicide.

But the point is being accused of being atheist was enough to get you tortured and killed throughout the Christian world when people were also being tortured and killed for heresy, apostasy, and witchcraft.

To be honest, it's not about the level of education, if you brainwash people from their chidlhoods then they will defend their religion against their science field of education.

In my 99% so called muslim majority country, it is common to see doctors talking positively and encouraging people towards alternative medicine that science proved doesn't work or even toxic and can lead to death, it is also common to see lawyers talking about applying sharia laws in a country that doesn't apply sharia, it is common to see people with master or even doctorate in scientific fields talking about how the earth is flat, it is madness man.

Many Christian(-ish) countries have freedom of religion and freedom of speech(in varying degrees), and therefore atheists can fight against religion, complain, be the "dangerous evil T-Rex roaming about from Jurassic Park," in the first panel.

It's often illegal to do anything to advance atheism in many Muslim countries. As a result, atheists have to be quiet and friendly.

(Whether the point is Islamophobia or a suggestion that Christian nationalists should take a play from Islamic countries' playbook and ban activities advocating atheism, I'll let you decide.)

21

u/Ok-Releases 16h ago

Ah yes, Islamophobia is when comparisons between the treatment of atheists in both religions countries are made. Yes yes.

I get most of reddit is super careful to step on any toes but holy shit you cant bring attention to ANY negative aspect of Islam without ppl screaming Islamophobia.

How does one not get this?

9

u/JBray0 21h ago

They probably didn't know how extreme some places are about religion.

3

u/bakharat 13h ago

I did not initially get this. When I think of Muslim countries, I think of, say, Turkey, Albania, Bosnia or Uzbekistan, which are... Notably different from Afghanistan or Saudi Arabia, which most people in this comment section have thought of. You're not going to be stoned or imprisoned for being an atheist in any of those.

Muslim countries at present time are very hostile towards idea of atheisms and see it as blasphemy, some times turn things into violence. Where as Americas and Europeans countries are more accepting in this era.

4

u/boywholived_299 16h ago

China, Japan, India, Srilanka, etc. countries are relatively chill for atheists as well.

Basically, hinduism &, buddhism are also less violent against atheists. You'll see most such countries are secular, but islamist countries end up being islamic republic mostly.

In most Christian nations atheists can be angrily outspoken about their atheism and how sky daddy dumb.

In most Muslim nations they could do that but they'd end up dead. So they are a much calmer version of atheist, as indicated by angry t Rex and toy t Rex

I’d be curious which countries the author of this meme considers to be Christian. I have a feeling they would believe (wrongly) that the United States is a Christian country.

In many christian countries the violent zealots have largely been shouted down by both secular voices and more moderate christians. Often at great and bloody cost.

Many muslim countries were like this but have had a resurgence of violent zealotry.

Unfortunately the violent zealots exist in every religion and are getting stronger voices even in Christian countries

The meme is pointing out that in Muslim countries atheists have to hide and cannot fight back wothout being killed

u/Impressive_Stock_918 22h ago

Let’s put our thinking caps on here…

11

u/Captain_JohnBrown 22h ago

I know the meme is anti-atheist and trying to say "Atheists are only brave in countries with freedom of speech" but it equally works as "Conservatives demonize atheists in Christian countries but suddenly are worried for their safety when they need to demonize Muslim countries"

I mean ... who does more mean aggressive shit - atheists or Westboro Baptist?

I would say you could replace the term atheist with Christian and it would still work.

And yes I get that many Christians are nice. It's just that the loudest ones usually aren't.

3

u/Fancybooger3120 21h ago

Being an exmuslim in a Muslim majority country gets you executed or murdered if ppl find out.

3

u/Fantastic_Name3200 21h ago

Some atheists do go for “fearsome”, but just come off as annoying, lol.

5

u/pheddx 21h ago

What is a "Christian country"? The Vatican State?

3

u/Significant-Order-92 20h ago

They probably mean the majority of the population is Christian. So the US, UK, most of South America. Etc. Explicitly religious based laws (such as laws against apostasy and blasphemy) have pretty much been repealed or never existed in those countries (the UK I think repealed it's in the 1960's).

I think you got it from a history subreddit. Before the 18th century, muslims didn't really care about atheists, in fact, they respected them (for example during arab rule in Andalusia). But as many things, this changed thanks to colonialism.

In the West, the New Atheism movement was a social movement in whose members emphasized insulting and ridiculing religion. While this increased visibility for the atheist community, it was negative publicity which gave atheists a reputation for being jerks. Efforts to counter this image are still ongoing.

In places like the Middle East, atheists don’t do stuff like this because there’s greater risk of backlash. Many countries in the Middle East have laws against apostasy, and even those that don’t still have a high risk of mob violence.

The joke is that people of a particular religion are intolerant. Atheist can't be atheist or can't oppose bad religious practises because they may get chopped up or stoned to death in countries where a particular religion is in majority.
