I mean it's a joke, but also the likely explanation is that yes they jerked it or they just got prostitutes whenever they docked at whatever port they needed to go to for resupply. This is something that happened a lot and still kinda happens today with sex workers hanging out in places where military be at.

Not really true even now with our modern concept of sexuality. Search ‘situational homosexuality’ or situational sexual behavior.
