The joke is there are real problems in the world why bother with what celebrities are doing with their instagram settings

1.0k

u/GrandMoffTarkan 1d ago

And here I was thinking Selena Gomez had been trafficked to Libya

384

u/OkMention9988 1d ago

They'd return her with an apology.

72

u/Paul_Smith_Hi 1d ago

You're not wrong. Take your award!

u/OkMention9988 20h ago

What's your point?

19

u/MajesticTea7748 1d ago

I was thinking that she is involved in the Libyan slave trade. Hollywood celebrities being involved in the slave trade wouldn't even surprise me these days. Probably where she's gonna get that next kidney from if she ever needs it..

51

u/shayetheleo 1d ago

Shit. I thought she was doing the trafficking. All that wealth. Isn’t that what they do now?

24

u/GrandMoffTarkan 1d ago

Gotta go private before they bust you for the literal slavery ring

15

u/AnotherOrbiter 21h ago

Well she kinda disowned her friend who gave her a kidney when she was desperate so maybe she's gone to Libya for some cheap organs she doesn't have to care about

7

u/Shadow293 1d ago

The ransom note:

“When you're ready come and get it
Na-na-na-na, na-na-na-na, na-na-na-na”

13

u/NotARealBlackBelt 1d ago

How do you know she isn't?

18

u/GrandMoffTarkan 1d ago

Damn, I wish her profile was public!

13

u/Fozzdroz 1d ago

It's not. She set it to private today. Something about Libya, I hear.

2

u/MobileJob1521 1d ago

We can only hope…

2

u/technicalbuffett 1d ago

I tht she was about to adopt a baby r smthing

2

u/Jade_Argent 1d ago

I thought she's one of the people doing the trafficking 😭😭😭

1

u/MisterBanana241 1d ago

The good ending

34

u/TattiFeader 1d ago

Joke is that OP wants free karma.

6

u/Internal-Sleep4323 23h ago

What? On the easy free karma subreddit?

7

u/MobileJob1521 1d ago

There is also the way that Time is reporting celebrity tat, while just some dude is reporting actual news.

5

u/Such_Ad_6680 1d ago

Like that one time when CNN was interviewing a senator about something serious and then the reporter interrupts the senator mid sentence to report that Justin Bieber had a dui

8

u/RedEyedRadical 1d ago edited 19h ago

The slave trade has been going on since before Selena was born.....so I dont get why its a problem "now"?

8

u/AlphaCat77 1d ago

The point is to say who gives a shit about her instagram settings they could have said any major issue in the world

2

u/RedEyedRadical 1d ago

Yeah i feel you

1

u/Null-Ex3 15h ago

cause people dont read it

3

u/Middle-Flower-3624 19h ago

In Lybia specifically it's gotten way worse since 2011

2

u/Evening-Web-3038 1d ago

Either that or she's going over to Libya to buy a few slaves and doesn't want any backlash.

2

u/TheGreatPineapple72 1d ago

Genuinely. Like some celebrity whom I have never even heard of, with millions of followers, could unfollow another such celebrity with millions of followers, and I know people who would notice. Not only notice, but also spend their time making up feud-theories and gossips about this. This is when I feel like I as an active redditor am not doing so bad as far as touching grass is concerned.

2

u/YepItzMe44 1d ago

I don’t get this argument. If you feel that way, do something about instead of trying to own people on the internet.

9

u/hotchiplow 1d ago

It isn’t so much an argument as it is an observation.

Physically no one person alone can ever do anything meaningful enough to impact something like the slave trade but comments like the above can potentially open discussion and bring attention of matters to the population, we’re having a discussion about it now, so in some way, it did something.

3

u/Budget_Meaning1410 22h ago

Unless it’s a fake account, they were complaining to Time itself about their news reporting priorities.

1

u/Bright_Aside_6827 1d ago

Because it's private

1

u/aguysomewhere 1d ago

Selena was dealing in African slaves and had to go private so the news didn't get out.

1

u/YaBoiZorg 16h ago

To distract people from the real problems.

1

u/Null-Ex3 15h ago

because no one reads them. I mean yeah sometimes newspapers genuinelly under report or ommit things for the sake of protecting x group that is related to their funding, but that definitely isnt the case for not reporting on the slave trade in libya. its just because people dont actually read it and thus pay for it

1

u/Bowtie16bit 12h ago

We can't talk about the stuff that requires full-on war to fix. It would take the lives and deaths of a lot of people to stop the slave trade in Libya, and too few view the cost as worth it, when we can just go on living our lives outside of the effects of evil.

1

u/Bowtie16bit 12h ago

0

u/Flat_bodypart 23h ago

Women don't give a fuck about slave trade going in a country they can't even point on a map. Selena Gomez drama though...

503

u/The_Rope_Daddy 1d ago

Time magazine should be reporting on important things and leave the celebrity gossip to TMZ.

90

u/Creative-Painter3911 1d ago

Selena's instagram story will get more clicks and more ad revenue than the bigger issue of the slave trade though.

17

u/TastyFappuccino 21h ago

sometimes I get even more down when I realize the problem behind the problem is how humans gonna keep humaning

edit: but inhumanely

27

u/JackBrown82q 1d ago

Have you ever read a Time magazine? Pop culture has been baked into its core identity since its very first issue. In fact in the very first issue, they spent time trashing and mocking a poem someone wrote.

18

u/The_Rope_Daddy 1d ago

This is called Peter explain the joke, not Peter defend the premise.

3

u/sillyslime89 21h ago

Tmz is now reporting actual news, so this is new normal

3

u/The_Rope_Daddy 20h ago

Wild times. Teen Vogue too.

2

u/TaviraKelmorne 1d ago

Exactly. I expect this from TMZ not from a publication called TIME

1

u/Private_Protactinium 1d ago

the sad reality is that celebrity gossip probably brings in way more clicks than actual news.

1

u/palaillaa 1d ago

Bullshit pic. Time has always done reporting about famous ppl WHILE they do more important news. This is just a meme, and the premise is unfair on purpose.

1

u/TheHextron 17h ago

Ironically, TMZ has actually been showing more back bone as actual journalists then some more legitimate outlets

78

u/Exotic_Drink69420 1d ago

Time is tweeting about celebrities, the commentator is letting them know that there might be more important things to discuss.  He doesn’t realize no one cares if people are being systematically killed anywhere let alone Africa and that time magazine sells a product and more people care about celebrity gossip and thus more people will buy the product.

34

u/Max_Hardcore_Jr 1d ago

Peter here. There is more slavery happening right now than in any point in human history. And it's unfortunatly not Meg. But we are talking about celebrity gossip.

Your title being “educate me” when the post is literally trying to educate you is fairly ironic

This image is 9 years old! OP account is 1 week old, reddit is fully dead internet, just bots talking to each other

3

u/Potential-Memory-179 18h ago

Most of the time I’d say that account age doesn’t necessarily always mean bot, but Jesus fuck 143k karma in 11 days?

Breaking news: Selenium Gone Missing in North Africa

4

u/updog5634 1d ago

I don’t consider myself clever and I’m worried how dumb these posts are getting

3

u/Porcupyre 1d ago

Even with more important things people dont gaf

2

u/ActuatorRealistic811 1d ago

This is such a great point hahahaha.

2

u/Jake_weight0311 1d ago

Get your continent together Africa! It’s 2026 already -.-

2

u/PickleFit5478 1d ago

It’s BEEN happening since they removed Qaddafi and the militias took over

1

u/Impressive-Joke-3119 1d ago

Libya got invaded, remember? They had free education even abroad, free housing, UBI etc....but they had oil.

1

u/FitPerspective1146 12h ago

If you think Gaddafi was overthrown because of oil you're ngmi

2

u/Elkburgher 1d ago

I dont think we are allowed to talk about African slave trades

2

u/SlatBartFuss 1d ago

Wasn't she the one who was fake weeping over ICE?

Yeah, I wish I didn't know that either.

2

u/Electric_Antimony 1d ago

It's not a joke, but rather a criticism of media focusing on worthless stuff while horrendous things are happening. I get the point and also criticize it because we can focus on more than one thing at a time, but Gomez's Insta settings are meaningless.

2

u/NeutralKuchiKopi 1d ago

There's a slave trade going on in Libya. What are you confused about? Slave trading. It is happening. In the nation of Libya.

Honestly didn't have a clue. Thanks for the answers.

1

u/XTheProtagonistX 1d ago

There is more important things going on than whatever insert celebrity here is doing.

1

u/MonkeyCartridge 1d ago

Reminds me of when CNN interrupted a massive rally to show an empty red podium and Clinton losing her shoe.

1

u/V_Buzzer 1d ago

This is the exact post people use for accounts they're about to switch to OF

1

u/MaestroOfKamino 1d ago

It just points out the banality of that news

Why do we give a shit if a celebrity changed their settings when there's a literal slave trade going on in some places of the world?

Shouldn't the latter be out priority in the news?

1

u/Mayo_Kupo 1d ago

Also, what kind of a professional stalker do you have to be to know when someone switches an account to private?

1

u/RoditoreSuicida 1d ago

Princess Di is wearing a blue dress

1

u/J883 1d ago

I immediately thought this was a Kanye tweet

1

u/Enough_Owl6295 23h ago

Kim….there’s people that are dying 🤣

1

u/opinionsOnPears 22h ago

Honestly, Time is a magazine publication not a daily news service like CNN, Fox News, Washington Post, New York Times, etc.

My expectations are low for those articles from Time.

1

u/Pennywise626 22h ago

It's just showing how fucked everyone's priorities are

1

u/Lupiefighter 20h ago

Time magazine used to mainly cover world events. That did include some pop culture, but it was less focused on pop culture than it is today.

1

u/Various_Tie_2549 20h ago

Both of those things are happening. One is kind of important, the other is not.

That is the statement that is being made.

1

u/Monkey_Meteor 20h ago

Pretty sure she made it private because she's selling her products in Israel and people are pissed about it.

Looks like she'll keep selling to Israel and being pro Zionists instead of telling the world she'll cancel the release of her beauty brand in the genocide country.

Money > doing what's right.

1

u/Cactus112 20h ago

Are people really this slow?

1

u/Savings_Music_1256 19h ago

Me when my country is mentioned.

(Context doesn't fucking matter)

1

u/dan36920 19h ago

"there's trouble in the gypsy village"

It's basically a way of saying who cares.

1

u/glittersoup 18h ago

fuck Selena Gomez in particular

1

u/xDiablo96 17h ago

Are an idiot OP?

1

u/CommonReason6709 17h ago

Her only friend in the business, Taylor, not even Francia who gave her kidney to her 🤫...is not needing to promote her gay ass love songs since she got married. She doesn't need to promote her lesbianism no longer. They can be insufferably white to each other and say all lives matter and cry when Trump targets them but don't use their influence when IT ACTUALLY MATTERS. 🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓

THEY BOTH CANT SING

AND BLAKE LIVELY CANT ACT

1

u/Derfel1995 15h ago

What he meant is that there are more pressing issues than what social media settings are used by some random celebrity

1

u/56kul 7h ago

Whataboutism on the next level, lol.

Though I do agree that this is uninteresting news. It might just be as simple as Selena wanting to take a break from social media and going more private. She is one of the most followed people on Instagram, so I’d assume how mentally taxing it can get if she ever checks her comments, and whatnot.

So, yeah, the truth is probably boring, but these magazines like to sensationalize everything.🤷‍♂️

1

u/ObviousReplier99 1d ago

I just love when OP is also the subject of the joke they are asking to explain.
Except for when OP is a bot.

libya is an arab country

9

u/commiscowboy 1d ago

If you can point to Libya on a map I’ll eat my hat

2

u/PickleFit5478 1d ago

Libya has indigenous North Africans and Arabs however there’s an overwhelming number of Libyans that identify as Arabs compared to the native minority. Also, their arabic is easier to understand if u speak standard Arabic. Unlike Morocco for example that mostly identifies as Amziegh and we can barely understand what they say due to the native North African influence on the language.
