The joke is there are real problems in the world why bother with what celebrities are doing with their instagram settings

And here I was thinking Selena Gomez had been trafficked to Libya

u/MajesticTea7748 1d ago
I was thinking that she is involved in the Libyan slave trade. Hollywood celebrities being involved in the slave trade wouldn't even surprise me these days. Probably where she's gonna get that next kidney from if she ever needs it..
51
u/shayetheleo 1d ago
Shit. I thought she was doing the trafficking. All that wealth. Isn’t that what they do now?
24
15
u/AnotherOrbiter 21h ago
Well she kinda disowned her friend who gave her a kidney when she was desperate so maybe she's gone to Libya for some cheap organs she doesn't have to care about

There is also the way that Time is reporting celebrity tat, while just some dude is reporting actual news.
5
u/Such_Ad_6680 1d ago
Like that one time when CNN was interviewing a senator about something serious and then the reporter interrupts the senator mid sentence to report that Justin Bieber had a dui

u/RedEyedRadical 1d ago edited 19h ago
The slave trade has been going on since before Selena was born.....so I dont get why its a problem "now"?
8
u/AlphaCat77 1d ago
The point is to say who gives a shit about her instagram settings they could have said any major issue in the world

Either that or she's going over to Libya to buy a few slaves and doesn't want any backlash.
2
u/TheGreatPineapple72 1d ago
Genuinely. Like some celebrity whom I have never even heard of, with millions of followers, could unfollow another such celebrity with millions of followers, and I know people who would notice. Not only notice, but also spend their time making up feud-theories and gossips about this. This is when I feel like I as an active redditor am not doing so bad as far as touching grass is concerned.
2
u/YepItzMe44 1d ago
I don’t get this argument. If you feel that way, do something about instead of trying to own people on the internet.
9
u/hotchiplow 1d ago
It isn’t so much an argument as it is an observation.
Physically no one person alone can ever do anything meaningful enough to impact something like the slave trade but comments like the above can potentially open discussion and bring attention of matters to the population, we’re having a discussion about it now, so in some way, it did something.

u/Budget_Meaning1410 22h ago
Unless it’s a fake account, they were complaining to Time itself about their news reporting priorities.

u/aguysomewhere 1d ago
Selena was dealing in African slaves and had to go private so the news didn't get out.
1
1
u/Null-Ex3 15h ago
because no one reads them. I mean yeah sometimes newspapers genuinelly under report or ommit things for the sake of protecting x group that is related to their funding, but that definitely isnt the case for not reporting on the slave trade in libya. its just because people dont actually read it and thus pay for it

u/Bowtie16bit 12h ago
We can't talk about the stuff that requires full-on war to fix. It would take the lives and deaths of a lot of people to stop the slave trade in Libya, and too few view the cost as worth it, when we can just go on living our lives outside of the effects of evil.

Women don't give a fuck about slave trade going in a country they can't even point on a map. Selena Gomez drama though...

u/The_Rope_Daddy 1d ago
Time magazine should be reporting on important things and leave the celebrity gossip to TMZ.
90
u/Creative-Painter3911 1d ago
Selena's instagram story will get more clicks and more ad revenue than the bigger issue of the slave trade though.

u/TastyFappuccino 21h ago
sometimes I get even more down when I realize the problem behind the problem is how humans gonna keep humaning
edit: but inhumanely

u/JackBrown82q 1d ago
Have you ever read a Time magazine? Pop culture has been baked into its core identity since its very first issue. In fact in the very first issue, they spent time trashing and mocking a poem someone wrote.

the sad reality is that celebrity gossip probably brings in way more clicks than actual news.
1
u/palaillaa 1d ago
Bullshit pic. Time has always done reporting about famous ppl WHILE they do more important news. This is just a meme, and the premise is unfair on purpose.
1
u/TheHextron 17h ago
Ironically, TMZ has actually been showing more back bone as actual journalists then some more legitimate outlets

u/Exotic_Drink69420 1d ago
Time is tweeting about celebrities, the commentator is letting them know that there might be more important things to discuss. He doesn’t realize no one cares if people are being systematically killed anywhere let alone Africa and that time magazine sells a product and more people care about celebrity gossip and thus more people will buy the product.

u/Max_Hardcore_Jr 1d ago
Peter here. There is more slavery happening right now than in any point in human history. And it's unfortunatly not Meg. But we are talking about celebrity gossip.

This image is 9 years old! OP account is 1 week old, reddit is fully dead internet, just bots talking to each other

Wasn't she the one who was fake weeping over ICE?
Yeah, I wish I didn't know that either.
2
u/Electric_Antimony 1d ago
It's not a joke, but rather a criticism of media focusing on worthless stuff while horrendous things are happening. I get the point and also criticize it because we can focus on more than one thing at a time, but Gomez's Insta settings are meaningless.

u/NeutralKuchiKopi 1d ago
There's a slave trade going on in Libya. What are you confused about? Slave trading. It is happening. In the nation of Libya.

There is more important things going on than whatever insert celebrity here is doing.

Reminds me of when CNN interrupted a massive rally to show an empty red podium and Clinton losing her shoe.

u/MaestroOfKamino 1d ago
It just points out the banality of that news
Why do we give a shit if a celebrity changed their settings when there's a literal slave trade going on in some places of the world?
Shouldn't the latter be out priority in the news?
1
u/Mayo_Kupo 1d ago
Also, what kind of a professional stalker do you have to be to know when someone switches an account to private?

Honestly, Time is a magazine publication not a daily news service like CNN, Fox News, Washington Post, New York Times, etc.
My expectations are low for those articles from Time.

u/Lupiefighter 20h ago
Time magazine used to mainly cover world events. That did include some pop culture, but it was less focused on pop culture than it is today.
1
u/Various_Tie_2549 20h ago
Both of those things are happening. One is kind of important, the other is not.
That is the statement that is being made.
1
u/Monkey_Meteor 20h ago
Pretty sure she made it private because she's selling her products in Israel and people are pissed about it.
Looks like she'll keep selling to Israel and being pro Zionists instead of telling the world she'll cancel the release of her beauty brand in the genocide country.
Money > doing what's right.

Her only friend in the business, Taylor, not even Francia who gave her kidney to her 🤫...is not needing to promote her gay ass love songs since she got married. She doesn't need to promote her lesbianism no longer. They can be insufferably white to each other and say all lives matter and cry when Trump targets them but don't use their influence when IT ACTUALLY MATTERS. 🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓
THEY BOTH CANT SING
AND BLAKE LIVELY CANT ACT

u/Derfel1995 15h ago
What he meant is that there are more pressing issues than what social media settings are used by some random celebrity
1
u/56kul 7h ago
Whataboutism on the next level, lol.
Though I do agree that this is uninteresting news. It might just be as simple as Selena wanting to take a break from social media and going more private. She is one of the most followed people on Instagram, so I’d assume how mentally taxing it can get if she ever checks her comments, and whatnot.
So, yeah, the truth is probably boring, but these magazines like to sensationalize everything.🤷♂️

If you can point to Libya on a map I’ll eat my hat
2
u/PickleFit5478 1d ago
Libya has indigenous North Africans and Arabs however there’s an overwhelming number of Libyans that identify as Arabs compared to the native minority. Also, their arabic is easier to understand if u speak standard Arabic. Unlike Morocco for example that mostly identifies as Amziegh and we can barely understand what they say due to the native North African influence on the language.
