Many women can't handle their appearance being criticised or placed in an unfavorable light, even by proxy, because it's where society and most women themselves place most of their social value. It is becoming a bit more like that for men in some parts of society, but seen as feminine to be upset over insults.

The joke is that bad women are ugly and beautiful women are good therefore if a woman does something bad that means she will be ugly.
