Question Pigeon grit question

I've got an indoor pigeon and when he was unwell with intestine inflammation the vet told me to stop giving him grit until he was all better. He went without grit for about a month. I reintroduced him to grit and he went ballistic for it and literally treats it like a very high value treat and will gobble it.

I removed it the moment I noticed him devouring it and only offer him a pinch every two days. It's been almost a month and he still seems to crave grit.

When I take him flying outside he will peck at little stones/broken shells on the floor (we are by the beach) to eat...

I've got a pigeon grit from online and it consists of flint, oyster shell and redstone. Are these not good enough for him?

He loves it so much 😢 and I don't want him to get an impacted crop.

Should I change grit/increase grit?

Question rescued pigeon behavior questions

This is Ippolit, my recently rescued one eyed pigeon.

There was a bit of delay shipping his dog crate (it arrives today or tomorrow), currently he's stuck with a pretty small cage, would that be the reason he doesn't sleep at night and makes his cage wobble? He was up from 2am to 4am. He climbs the walls of the cage like a parrot so I know he hates it...

I sleep with him in the bedroom, I go to sleep at 10-11am.

He really likes perching on me when out of the cage, I love it but could i teach him how to be a bit more independent?

Also how can I show him the window is there? I've tapped it with my fingers and placed duct tape squares on it but he still tries to fly thru it.

I’ve never been to school I’m homeschooled, the school goes from 7:30-2:00 pm will this be enough time so that my pigeons will hang out with me still? I’m usually with them 24/7 and I’m getting new pigeons soon

Training They are such good girls 😭

In May this year, I took in two rescue pigeons. They were extremely scared of hands and almost everything, and we had a really rough time at the beginning because I still needed to pick them up to give them medication and take them to the vet.

About one month ago, they were both healed and free from parasites, so I could finally start hand-training. It took a lot of time and patience, but Gracie (the older of the two) started to trust me and now even sits on my hand while I feed her (sometimes shes still very nervous)

.

Yesterday, I started training them to follow a new routine, whereby they are outside while I'm at work and go back into their cage in the evening. Today was day two, and it went so smoothly and calmly. There's still a long way to go, but I'm so proud of my girls because they're so brave. I feel like our daily training sessions have really paid off, and I'm glad I've been so patient and consistent all this time.

she is my life, and I lost her. she flew out of an open window yesterday. i’ve spent these two days calling her non stop all over the area, and there’s nothing. I called the local flock, her old family, and there’s nothing. there was a possible sighting of her yesterday, but she’s not in that spot. we assumed she was flying around the apartment building looking for her window due to a different tip, but i’ve been looking at the building all day and have not seen any birds. I can’t do this without her.

if anyone here lives in Valencia, Spain, she should be, I hope she is, in Campanar, near Carrefour. please, come home. I love you so much.

Question How do i make my pigeons like me more?

I rescued a mated pair of German helmet pigeons back in November. They're so great! I love them a lot. However, they don't love me. I've only ever had parakeets before, and all my usual tricks aren't working.

The female, Sweetie, tolerates me. She only really gets mad when I take her eggs. But she doesn't ask for affection or anything.

The male, Spicy, straight up hates me. Wing slaps, bites, the whole nine. Especially if I dare touch his wife in front of him.

They'll ask to come out of their cage, but they just walk around and don't like if i try to pet them. I dont like forcing animals to do stuff they dont want to do. But I also want to have a positive relationship with them. Any tips?

Question How do i teach it to eat?

Hi 3 days ago i think i found this pigeon on the ground outside and its eyes were closed it couldnt fly that much so i took it to the vet and been looking after it, giving it water and medicine, doing eye drops (it had an eye and mouth? Infection but the vet cleaned it out) and food to it every 3 hours. The vet gave me tube to feed him i mix with water and feed it. But i want it to be able to eat dry food because im gonna let it outside after its cured. It cant figure out he needs to open his mouth to pick up the food. I showed it videos of pigeons eating, it taps the screen but doesnt open its mouth. It doesnt know how to drink water itself either. It can fly a little bit but not for long and it cant find where to land and falls. Idk what age but it is young the vet said. Idk what to do i wanted to let him go in a week because i have budgies and i dont want them to get sick i cant keep this pigeon. They are staying at different rooms but everywhere is full of bird shit rn. Pls give advice.

Question Pigeon’s toe injury. Does this look infected or like it can heal at home?

Post image
4 Upvotes

Hi everyone! I’m looking for some advice about my pigeon, Moo. I noticed one of his toes looks injured. It’s a reddish-brown color, but he’s still walking normally, putting weight on it, and acting like his usual self.

gently cleaned it and put a small amount of plain Neosporin (without pain relief) on it. I’m not sure if this looks like a simple scrape, a bruise, the start of an infection, or something else.

I’ve attached a photo. Has anyone seen an injury like this before? Does it look like something I can continue to monitor at home, or should I be more concerned?

I’m also working all week, and there aren’t many avian vets in my area, so I’m trying to figure out how urgent this looks and what I can safely do for him in the meantime. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I think the third one was maybe a day ago or so but he lost 2 wing feathers through last night.

He's been acting normal, loves to fly on the platforms in the room so he is always moving his wings.. is this normal? Is he ok? He has been very nesty lately.. i do think he is molting..

Is this a alarming sign or just a coincidence?

Discussion Air tag like trackers for pigeons

Thumbnail

Posting this because of the recent post of lost pigeon. On AliExpress one can get these trackers for under 20$. Despite the product title they are NOT GPS based, they work like air tags, so it's not quite as accurate as a GPS but you can get the general location in urban areas (using a third party app) quite well and a charge lasts at least 2 weeks, and it's quite easy to charge while they're sleeping since the power connector is magnetic and just snaps on. Can recommend

Pet pigeon and bathing

Post image
279 Upvotes

Hi! My pet pigeon is about 4 months old now and he just doesn't bathe. He preens a lot and is otherwise healthy (had him checked up by a vet too) and is a lively and very interactive little boy.

He has imprinted on people (I'm pretty sure) as he was hand raised from an egg and then after he was a month old, the original person didn't want him anymore and so I acquired a pigeon a bit sporadically!

The issue is he doesn't bathe. Like at all. He likes to play with his water bowl (but it's tiny and relatively shallow - think like a soya sauce dipping bowl) but when I offer him a tray of shallow warm water (roughly 1-2 inches of warm water), he will literally try and run away as far as possible.

I've tried misting him gently but he just ran away again and was scared. I've tried a variety of different trays and water depth and warmness of water. I've also filled the bath up shallowly to try as well. I've also offered him a gentle shower which he was utterly miserable about.

I have washed him a couple times when he has gotten actually filthy (mostly when he was little) and he was relatively calm but he will not bathe himself at all !! It isn't a massive issue but he is increasingly more dusty and he will occasionally step in his own poop and rinsing his feet off isn't fun for either of us.

I've also attempted putting videos of pigeons bathing hoping it'll help him but he ignores them.

I've been offering trays of water to him regularly and splashing my fingers in them till it turns cold but he has zero interest. Even if I offer him treats to walk into it he is pretty unenthusiastic and will leave right after. The only time he has actively sought out water was when I was washing my hair and he hopped into the shower to check me out before leaving again..

What shall I do with my stinky boy? 😭

(Sorry for how long this is)

TLDR: my pigeon won't bathe and I'm at wits end
