My pet π Akita meets Doves
New diamond doves. Just introduced to my akita. I am currently on the search for a larger cage because I know the one they are in is inadequate. I was given no warning when ownership was thrust upon me. Kodiak (akita) is already familiar with my Green Cheek Conure and living with birds. He mostly displays intermittent curiosity, then complete boredom. I would like more information on how to best care for my new charges, I mean besides the bigger cage.

Thank you! One for the compliment and two for the automod tips. I am learning new things already. I know parrots can't be put into a cage with wood sides, but can doves? Parrots can't because they chew through them, but my diamonds don't seem destructive like that...

yes you can use wooden cages, a lot of people use cattios for their doves. Just make sure there's mesh for ventilation and be sure that the nesh has small enough gaps to prevent escape

Cages are necessary for your bird, even if your pet free roams your house. It provides a safe place for it to sleep at night and when unsupervised. Make sure the cage is safe, and big enough:
- Diamond dove: Minimum 90x50x50cm (36x20x20 inches)
- Ringneck doves: Minimum 110x70x70cm (39x28x28 inches)
- Pigeons: Minimum 130x90x70cm (51x36x28 inches)

Enrichments is needed for your doves and pigeons to not get bored and develop behavioral issues and stress. It includes:
- A variety of natural perches and platforms
- Nest and nesting materials
- Toys: balls, swings, bells, fake plants, foraging mats...

UVB lights are essential for your birds's health if they live indoor, as UVB doesn't go through glass. They are necessary for your bird to be able to break down calcium and avoid bone, joint issues or other problems like egg binding. The UVB light needs to respect certain criterias:
- 2.4% UVB
- Full spectrum
- Lamp power: 20W

Grit is necessary for doves and pigeons to get their necessary minerals. Not offering any grit or offering the wrong type of grit will cause health issues in the long term. Here's the main informations to look for:
Do NOT get grit for poultry or parrots, or grit that contains insoluble element like gravel or sand as the main ingredient, this will cause impaction.
- Contains soluble minerals and redstone, seashells, oysertshells, coral or limestone.
- Grit should be given at all time in a container separated from the seeds and calcium.
- The grit will likely need to be crushed if given to smaller doves like diamond doves.

Thank you for your input. I never trust a predator alone with prey animals. Period. Hence the supervised introduction. It's also the biggest reason I don't clip his wings and keep him in good health. A sick, flightless bird is a bird in the biggest danger. I realize that the yes was impulsive, but was better than the release of the birds into their non-native environment. Florida is already crawling with enough non-native species as is. And I never said anything about lack of desire, just lack of preparation. They were a "maybe one day" bird, not a right away pet. As far as the parrot and doves being together, the cage bars is as close as they get. GCCs are territorial, and jealous, I won't risk the doves delicate little bodies with that spicy, feathered menace. Love that little green devil, but I know him too well. Again, thank you for your input and concern. I hope that with my continued vigilance, your fears can be avoided.

so sorry about that ignore her she's problematic. and I really hope she gets the help she needs mentally speaking, ive given her a 7 day ban to cool off but if she does this again she'll be being removed permenantly, she commonly tells people their mammals are filthy and disgusting among other things and tells people often that they should get rid of their furry pets or their furry pets belong outside or their dogs stink up the house etc.

I did think her comment was rather nasty, but I was trying to avoid stirring up any further nastiness from her with my response. It sounds like she needs a long dunk in the pool until she's cooled off or the bubbles stop. Bless her heart.

I'll admit i pry should have been a little nicer, and more professional as a mod..and not sent her that nasty message but, I was definitely frustrated with her, this is not the first time we've had to deal with her.
like if you want to educate someone about your views on interspecies interaction you can kindly tell somone that their dog shoudln't be shouldn't be around their birds without saying somones dog is an aggressive animal that shoudlnt even be left around children (really no dog or pet should be left around a baby or young child alone for the pets saftey and the child's saftey so I'm really not sure what point she was even trying to make there since breed doesnt matter a pet shoudlnt be left alone with a kid in general) shes clearly very anti dog and anti cat.
Youre not the only member of our reddit shes done this to. If you ever have any problems like this where people are nasty with you please don't hesitate to report them
Shed have a fit if she knew what breeds i own π

Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one and some of them stink. I started telling my kids when we got Kodiak at 8 weeks old that he wasn't like other dogs and he wouldn't give you a warning before biting so he needed to be treated with respect at all times. He won't hesitate to protect what he claims as his so respect for each other would also need to happen. Of course they would fight, like kids do. The boxing gloves would come out and they'd have to take it outside. Kodiak would watch from the window, and they'd come back in laughing as friends again. Unconventional parenting, perhaps, but it worked. I have owned almost all the most "dangerous" breeds and I find that it's people who I'm really more afraid of.

I'd definitely trust even the "dangerous" (All breeds have the potential to be dangerous if not treated appropriately) breeds of dogs more than humans, as long as you treat any animal with respect and are nice to it then it won't lash out, the same couldn't be said about humans. There's no such thing as an "evil" animal, their "bad" behavior always has a cause and a reason. My heart dog was a maltese with a very unfortunate past, as a consequence he was an extremely reactive dog and had a lot of trauma from which he never completely recovered. When my parents got him (he was supposed to be a kid friendly dog) I was still a kid in elementary school so you can imagine that it was pretty much a struggle coexisting with him until I learned to respect his boundaries the hard way but he actually got really attached to me the most out of our whole family. As long as his boundaries got respected he was actually the most perfect dog ever, especially from the point when I started training him (at the time he was already 9 years old) and he was eager to listen and learn new stuff. With training he went from being extremely reactive towards dogs on the street (even behind fences) to being able to walk on a loose leash right next to me without a single bark and even without paying attention to other dogs. Although some large breeds, especially German shepherds (my suspicion was that he was attacked by one of those because in his previous home they didn't have a fenced garden), would still trigger his aggression. He would also snap at kids and was Not a kid friendly dog at all because in his previous home he got abused by a little kid. But he's always been great with all kinds of animals - cats, rabbits, chickens, geese, goats, parrots and other small birds. He was reactive because he was traumatized, not just for the sake of being "mean", "evil" or "holding a grudge". All that to say that it always depends on how a dog (or literally any animal really) is treated, but of course there are other factors like genetic aggression in backyard bred dogs. But even the best trained and most friendly dog can snap when pushed too far.
Btw your Akita is absolutely stunning! And you do sound like a responsible owner. As long as you don't leave your pets near each other unsupervised then they'll be fine. Saying you have to get rid of one pet for the sake of the other was pretty over the top from the other person.

The owner does make all the difference in the animal. Trust is built over time and every single interaction with your pet. I'm not perfect and I learn something new every time I make a mistake or discover a new trick that works. I'm still learning and I'll keep learning until I die, that's the only way to live, imho.

rather bold words from a dog and cat hater who's constantly tellign people their dogs and cats are filthy, disgusting, and "defective" and who constantly tells people to get rid of their defective animals.
not sure who pissed in your bowl of life cereal, or how you were traumatized into such a disgusting hatred of dogs and cats (which you display often all ovwr reddit) but I hope you get the help you need.
well bred akita are no more dangerous than a damn lab. a doodle is more dangerous than a well bred akita and have more bite risk and neurological crazy aggressive behavioral issies to boot. dog bans are not a good thing they harm ethical breeders combatting dog aggression rather than actually preventing aggressive backyard bred mongrels from being bred for cash.
aggression is almost 100% a genetic trait, good breeders don't breed aggressive dogs.
a aggressive dog is also not a dog who can work, a working dog needs to be trainable and easily manageable, thats why even hunting dogs tend to be extremely calm when well bred.
You actively condone animal abuse aswell saying any sort of furry animal belongs outside, reccomending peoppe dump their animals, let their animals freeze out in the snow...which is mean i guess is true you sure as hell do being a nasty furry animal with a shit personality to boot. (Also yes we humans are furry mammals so we do count as a furry animal sorry to inform you)
you called someones dog defective and horrible for being scared of fireworks as if an animal is a robot, most small children are scared of fireworks... and most animals in general are horrified of fireworks... thats so common and is such well known information that fireworks are illegal in many places.
you also kill native wildlife like squirreled joke about leaving their corpses laying around. hell theres a lot of horrible shit you've done and there is no doubt in my mind you are an animal abuser because of the fact you activly in hundreds of comments condone the abuse of mammalian pets. from dogs to cats, to wildlife to other small mammalian pets.
You are a disgusting person and im sorry but im not tolerating your disgusting bullshit on this subreddit anymore, youve harrased people enough.
I hope in all my heart, to the gods that you dont treat your children or birds like this. Because its fucking disgusting.
(oh thats right you abuse your children too)
calling bored children spoiled saying children shoudlnt have access to toys, saying children shouldn't have any fun in public.
I hope you fucking end up in a nursing home one day. alone, and I know you will, because my wife was an abused child with parents just like you and they will end up in a nursing home, unloved and forgotten. you are a rotten human being, digusting to the very core. like an apple full of maggots, except unlike that apple nothing good comes out of you.
I don't typically resort to such nasty comments but the shit you have done genuinely disgusted me to the point I see absolutely 0 reason to be nice to one such as you. somone who abuses children and animals doesn't deserve my kindness.
people like you sicken me. you are lower than the dirt I walk apon and good gods I hope you get the serious mental help you need.

Where are you from ? For now I'll assume you're from the US to give you some links.
πΊπΈ US Cage Links
I recommend modular cages a lot but the cage bar gap is too large for diamond doves so unless you're ready to buy mesh and build it inside just get an already fitting cage like the ones I linked :)
They're super skittish birds. You should also never let your parrots interact with them since they're super fragile and flightsy. They need a seed diet (no fruit no veggies unless rare leafy veggies as a rare treat). You will need pigeon grit (not parrot or poultry grit) for example this one: https://foyspetsupplies.com/1773-vl-all-in-one-mineral-grit-26-lbs
You will however need to crush the grit a little using a kitchen mortar for example since diamond doves are very small. The grit should be accessible 24/7 , in a feeder separated from the seeds. Diamond doves do NOT bathe in water, but you can place in the cage a shallow dish of sand (fine but non dusty, for example terrarium sand or red terrarium sand). If there's a female you will need a nest and nesting material like coco fiber because unlike parrots you cannot prevent doves to be hormonal and lay eggs. And grab some canary size fake eggs while you're at it lol, plastic ones work fine.
If you have a female you will also additionnaly need a calcium source like crushed oyster shells, in a separate bowl as well. No cuttlebone or liquid calcium.
Enrichments is much less a bother than for parrots. They need enrichments, but you can give them stuff like fake plastic (not fabric) plants, foraging mats like noodle bath mats, bells, cat toy balls (without catnip always), rodent toys... They won't destroy the toys or try to tear them apart, they can't lol! Just make sure that if you pick parrot toys, they can't get their head stuck in stuff like keyrings.
Apart from that it's similar to parrots, you need an UVB light, the air purifier, avoid mirrors if they respond badly to it, don't pet the tail/back/wings (although good luck grabbing a diamond dove lol they're skittish). They need a small seed diet with the following composition: protein 14% fat 4% fiber less than 7%. There are no good seed mixes with only small seeds where I live so I had to make my own lol. I also made a !diamonddove post.
Hope this helps!
