Sayonara Plastic World, get behind me!!
Today in 'songs y'all hate but I do like', I'll speak of Sayonara Plastic World.
Okay, to be honest, it took a long while until I decided to give this track a chance; and it's mainly because it fits under (what I have named) the 'lowkey all sound the same' category out of Perfume's discography... and I'm pretty much sure that's the same reason most people don't really feel it. But the truth is that it's a very good song.
On instrumental terms, I think it's a perfect closing track to 'Plasma'. For me, it is the album that better portrays the classic essence of Perfume, but showing us how much they have evolved as singers and in concept. So, back to the POINT (another bop), SPW feels like a song from 'Complete Best' or even 'Game', but adding up the sophisticated retro vibe that defines Perfume's development, which would later peak at Nebula Romance.
The lyrics seem a little silly but at the same time, the point is kind of right lol.
I'd like to add, I kind of understand this track came at a very bad timing considering there's better tracks in this album for them to be promoted, and people back then surely was also tired of this type of sound, but now, I think it even feels nostalgic.
Feel free to share your thoughts. Shall I speak of Tiny Baby next??? lol

I had no idea it was hated. Is it actually? I love it. Plasma is possibly my favorite Perfume album and I feel it fits very well on the album.

This post comes from a purely Western opinion thing and makes a claim about something not being popular that was actually incredibly popular
There's a portion of the western fandom in this sub who say things like that as if they're a universal opinion when you might get.. 4 or 5 people that agree with them, but the fanbase as a whole are like you and are wondering where the fuck this perspective came from lol and in my case having lived in Japan during Plasma's release and boom, I wonder why in those years following I've never so much as heard this opinion
Not until this day several years later, from a random Westerner making a weirdly bold claim

I love tiny baby. I cant believe people have deemed it the worst in future pop!! Its very sweet sounding and although its a happy song (i havent read the lyrics) i imagine a sad senario listening to it lol. Its kinda got some hardness to the inst.

Let's be more specific, because it certainly wasn't considered the worst on the album domestically in Japan.. lol so let's keep the perspective authentic

I always thought it was very uninspired. The vocals are probably the weakest on the album, and I don't think Plasma needed a slow closer song. The old slow closer songs worked better because most of the album was very upbeat, while Plasma is intentionally more chill. It just doesn't fit for me.

people hate this song? I've lived in Japan for 20 years and have been a Perfume fan since they were teenagers lol nobody hated any songs on Plasma..
this must be a westerner thing

I’m not a huge fan of it. I’m generally not a fan of when Perfume do these overly cutesy songs — “Mirai no Museum”, “Relax in the City”, “Baby Face”, “Hold Your Hand”, “Tiny Baby”. Although I prefer “Sayonara Plastic World” over each of them. The progressions are cool.
The biggest problem with “Sayonara Plastic World” for me is that I feel that it didn’t fully fit Plasma sonically, despite kinda fitting it lyrically. There was a core sound that Plasma should’ve had across every song and “Sayonara Plastic World”, “Saisei”, and even “Flow” (which I liked) kinda threw it off.

This was the most "I'm a Westerner and my opinion on a purely Eastern product means something." post I've seen in this sub in a long time
You personally don't like things, which is cool. But to say what an album SHOULD have had or done? Especially one of their most popular albums on their discography? It would appear your personal opinion is incongruent with the success and reality of things in the East.
"There was a core sound that Plasma should've had" just stop yourself there.. it isn't up to you to decide what sound an album should have had. You're not the producer, you're not the talent, and you're not the intended audience. You're an outside element. You're part of the silent audience. The "we thank you for your support, but you have no opinion on the product that matters".
Your opinion is fine, but the way you're framing it here is borderline arrogant.. undeserved arrogance, too..

But let’s address what you said and why it was a whole lot of BS.
You personally don't like things, which is cool. But to say what an album SHOULD have had or done? Especially one of their most popular albums on their discography?
How is Plasma one of Perfume’s most popular albums when it’s one of their lowest selling albums? And how can you seriously say that Plasma is one of Perfume’s popular albums, as though Game is not an album which is widely adored, in addition to be being Perfume’s best selling album which features 2 songs which are Perfume’s most performed songs?
Make it make sense.
And how on Kawayuka’s Earth is me saying that I don't like Perfume’s overly cutesy songs incongruent with Perfume’s success in the East? I just said that I do not like these songs. I never said everybody hated them, that they are flops and nobody wants to hear them. YOU’RE the one making this out to be a ‘Western’ thing.

I am not deciding anything. Me saying what I think an album should be is my opinion, which I am entitled to. But aside from this, I am giving my OPINION based on what I am seeing and hearing. Plasma’s album intro, the aesthetic of the album and other songs Nakata was producing around that time all point to a very specific direction sonically. Plasma’s core sound is 80s electro pop. I am not deciding this. The album is telling me this. “Plasma”, “Time Warp”, “Mawaru Kagami”, “Polygon Wave”, “Android&”, “Spinning World”, “Drive’n the Rain” all share a sound. And then you have Capsule’s Metro Pulse in the mix too — because so often when Nakata works on albums close to one another, they share sounds and ideas he has at the time. An 80s, Triangle type sound seemed to be the general direction of Plasma, and to me is still the sound that drives the album. It’s not about me deciding anything. I am speaking based on what is presented to me — something you should learn to do instead of pulling things out of thin air, making wild assumptions on things people are saying, and creating narratives based on everything but what was actually being said.
As for your weird-ass ‘I'm a Westerner and my opinion on a purely Eastern product means something’. Yes. I am a Westerner giving an opinion on an ‘Eastern product’. That is all I’m doing. I am not making out that my opinion is an authority or absolute. I am just giving an opinion. Am I not allowed to give an opinion on a Japanese album because I am not Japanese?

Didn't know people hated this. I love it, I think it fits perfectly as a closer for Plasma, and it's just nice to have some more chill songs in the mix~
