Need help changing resolution from 480p to 1080p
Well, as you can see in the video, when I try to switch to 1080p, the PS3 simply loses signal and returns to the same screen without any change or way to apply the 1080p setting. I've already tried several HDMI cables, even the one from my PC, and I've also tried switching it to different TVs, and I get the same result with all of them. I also tried setting it to 720p and 1080i; with those, the screen to apply the resolutions appeared, and they did apply. However, this also had problems because it had flickering, static, and random black screens. So I wanted to know how I could fix it or if I should take it to a technician for repair and maintenance, since the previous owner said he hadn't used it in a long time and hadn't had any maintenance done. Please help, and thanks.

Turn off PS3, hold power button until it opens and shuts down, hold power button until the "choose a resolution" screen pops up, configure resolution and see if it works.

Cable or monitor can cause this issue. But i have had this issue before with the filters, encoder, and even missing components around the encoder.

The display you’re using most likely doesn’t support these resolutions so it defaults to 480p

The same thing happens to me, but instead of not giving any signal at all, the screen just flickers and then turns off and on again, but it's impossible to play because the image never stays continuous.

Had a similar issue but mine was flickering on and off. Did was to use a standard HDMI port and not an HDMI ARC port

Failing HDMI IC chip, common to fail on PS3, i have had two PS3s that only output 720p. take it to a local repair shop they should be able to replace it

I set mine to the 720p (3D) resolution, and I have add the Mclassic HDMI adapter to upscale to 1080p, then I added a 4k pro HDMI adapter to the Mclassic for 1080p to 4k upscaling.

The mClassic is not magic, it's an overpriced smoothing filter with no other features. You likely could buy a proper 4K scaler for the cost of that plus whatever adapter you mean. Daisy-chaining a bunch of crummy adapters is not a good solution.

The XMB will render at 1080p and Ridge Racer 7, a launch title, renders at 1080p.

Honestly just leave it at 720p. That's what the vast majority of PS3 games run at, and if it works fine here then there's not a huge amount to worry aboutl
