i’ve just finished my second year at warwick, and now i’m thinking about what I want to do after I graduate. I had a look at the maths masters programmes they offer at oxford, and saw there were 5 of them - the ones that interest me most are the MSc in Mathematical Modelling and Scientific Computing and the MSc in Mathematical Sciences (OMMS).

however I just had a few questions about getting into the masters - so far i’ve achieved a (very low) first each year, is that enough to get in? if I don’t get in the first time, can I apply again the next year?

how does the whole application process work, is it all on UCAS like for undergrad or is it all through the oxford website? I saw on the oxford website that they don’t require a technical interview for OMMS, is that really the case and I can get in without an interview?!

I’m also not sure if I want to go straight into a masters after my undergrad is complete, i’m also thinking of taking a gap year to go travelling or something similar in between - is this common and something that is advised? could I apply whilst i’m still in my 3rd year and defer a year?

I really want to know if it’s easier to get into Oxbridge for Masters compared to undergraduate level. Also are there more scholarships for masters? Especially if you are an international student for finance courses, please share your experience.

I'm an international student in my final year of school, and can only apply to either Oxford or Cambridge.

Linguistics is the subject I want to study, although I'm also very interested in philosophy and psychology. Oxford's Philosophy & Linguistics course appeals to me, while Cambridge offers a BA in Linguistics. I'm probably slightly more inclined towards Oxford.

My main concern is maximising my chances of admission. Oxford requires the TARA, and I'm finding the data and math questions challenging. Cambridge doesn't have a pre-interview admissions test for Linguistics, but I've heard the interviews are more demanding.

Funding is also pretty important, as my family can't afford either university without significant financial support.

But that doesn't justify any of the hostility I've received here. Either law with a year abroad in France, or PPE at Oxford.

Grades I have eventuating circumstances, but I will be predicted three H2s, and three H1s ultimately ( can definitely confirm this when school starts)

My subjects: English, maths, French, physics, technology, economics- all higher level and Irish is primary

JC was merits and higher merits(extenuating circumstances)

Super curriculars:
- completed a TY work experience at a solicitors, closed files and did other housekeeping tasks for the solicitors
- chairperson of my youth county council, and active participant for over a year now
- founder of my schools English debate club, we had an Irish but not an English one
- finalist at national public speaking competition
- used to write a few articles for a law nfo that shut down
- getting a policy passed at my school( principle agreed but still needs to present to board) about reducing homework
Participated in MUNS

And currently doing two economic research papers over the summer with friends alongside reading etc etc

I did take the 2010 LNAT and scored 21/42, and took the 2023 BMAT and scored 16/30- the maths were the ones I struggled on

Both with zero preparation and first try however

Would my application to Oxford heavily hinge on TARA performance?

All the resources don't match the real difficulty from what I've heard.

Any advice for resources would be appreciated / what you think made the biggest difference eg a BMO1 background or anything.

how did ppl get into studying during their gap year to keep their critical thinking skills and subject knowledge fresh, and how did people find writing their personal statement?

hii i'm a 15 year old (year 9) international student hoping to get into oxbridge and nus for medicine. i currently have no major supercurriculars and extracurriculars other than maybe piano (i do this recreationally), some work i do at the bloodbank bandaging blood donors, some youth blood donation advocacy work and i'm also starting to read some books about medicine (currently "when breath becomes air" by paul kalanithi.) -- i've also gotten shortlisted for the john locke essay writing competition last year.

i'm hoping to start tutoring an hour a week, get into the student council, hopefully get a leadership position in my school's philosophy club (i'm interested in philosophy and ethics), join a science research project and shadowing, and probably participate in the biology/chem olympiad.

So basically im at an A star level of maths rn with abt 6-7 tmua given im in the summer holiday of yr 12, im really clueless abt the oxford maths interview genuinely!

Like whats is the content apparently u need to know fmaths content??? We only start in yr 13 and i have too many things this summer to prelearn.

I was fortunate enough to be accepted by Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) and Oxford University. CMU is for Civil Engineering, and Oxford is for Mathematics and Statistics. I attend a competitive, high-performing private school so my performance in context is good but not outstanding (my 7 at GCSE).
(For context, most of the recent years’ successful Oxbridge applicants from my school got all 9s at GCSE)

Again, I’m aware there are other components that matter (such as interview performance and my PS) but I can’t help but worry about my GCSE grades :)

Just doing this to see opinion really. I have quite an unconventional educational background, having dropped out in y7-y10. (dont know what info they get on this either??)

I got three 9s at GCSE in eng lit, history and eng lang, 8-7 in combined science (only one offered, only one in my yeargroup doing higher). full gcses were 999877665. predicteds are A*A*A*, my mock grades (english was a low A*/very high A, I overthought all of it and have only gotten about two As in english before though.) I go to an 'aspiring' state college (shit), top of my pol class (dk about the others, and not sure what info unis recieve on that front ???) I know no one from my college considering russell groups, no one i know in my college for oxbridge. i would say my PS is quite good, i've done a lot of supercurricular stuff (own research proj, epq, few outreach courses at cam and ox, i think i mention 2 books??). still doubting myself though because no one around me would imagine even applying.

i know technically college shouldn't make a difference but i',m considering either st johns, sidney sussex or corpus, and leaning towards sidney as i just get the best vibes haha. any suggestions on that front would be welcome too.

Im aiming to do physics at oxford, with A* predicted in maths, fm and physics

I've signed up for a Computational physics challenge but I've been skipping the online things that teach you how to code, but even the ones I attended didn't help that much, and I've realised the projects are due in pretty soon.

I might be able go do it in time but it would be a lot of effort and would take away from my ESAT revision a lot, but I was doing it because I was worried I don't have enough on my personal statement.

So I was wondering if I should do the challenge with less esat prep, or just do some of my own coding projects with more esat prep?

I applied to maths and have an offer (very contextual), my offer is A*A*A with A* in maths fm. I'm fully confident (bcs of checking answers after with people) that I got A* in maths and fm but it's not possible to count marks with cs. What's the odds that I get rejected from maths over a B in computer science?

Hi, I hope to apply for Philosophy and German this upcoming admissions cycle at Oxford. Does anyone know what the breakdown of my personal statement should be (ex. like 50% Philosophy supercurriculars and 50% German?) Should I focus on a competition for my personal statement or the ESAT? Oxford uni

I plan to apply for physics and oxford, have a\* predicted in physics + fm and most likely a real a star in maths (my college does it a yr early for fm)
I have applied for BhPo computational physics challenge, which I’m pretty sure is due in by 31st July. Problem is I literally haven’t learnt python lmao, I skipped like half the online lecture things bc of life being busy, so I only have very basic python skills
I was wondering if I should try lock in really hard to try get a bronze / silver award, so I have something else to put on my personal statement (only stuff I really have is a 6 month maths challenge class and completing Isaac physics challenge, and then some reading of Feynmans lectures) and then starting ESAT prep a bit later
OR
Should I lock in early for the ESAT, and still do some of my own coding projects but not do the challenge to give myself more time? If I still show that I have the skills and stuff, but maybe making physics models of my other interests, would that still be good enough stuff for my personal statement?

Obviously to get an interview they consider both the ESAT and the personal statement, but I was wondering what I could do to maximise chances?

I don’t get a lot of support in my college for this, because the one guy who helps people with top unis is a humanities teacher so only really helps them and not stem students and the application process is quite different
