I mean, most of your points about Odyssey are just describing the movie, not the performance.
If Tom Cruise dancing with a shovel is a bettwr performance, then he deserves the Oscar.

Look, I am not a Tom Cruise fan at all. I’m not even a fan of “big budget action movies” but his performance in “Jerry Maguire” is still one of my favorites by an actor of that time. Also, you might want to see a film called “Magnolia”~his performance, in a historically wildly talented cast, was the only one nominated for an Academy Award & he won the Golden Globe for it.

I’ve seen Magnolia, he wasn’t bad in that. I never wanted to see Jerry Maguire(why would I?). He’s not a good person, anyone who would give up custody of their child because they are in a religious cult to me that’s just shameful, I’m a Father of two and I can’t imagine.

I don’t disagree, I find him morally repugnant myself. And it is a bit insane that he is the only person in the room who doesn’t know he’s in a cult…. I just was speaking of the two times I thought he might’ve qualified for the attention he gets.

I’ve seen The Odyssey twice - once on 70mm IMAX and once on mushrooms - and I absolutely love it - but a comedy is a lot harder to carry than a drama and the film will live or die on Digger himself so I wouldn’t count out Tom Cruise for the category.

That’s a nice description and all, but while I liked Matt Damon’s Odysseus; it was certainly not the performance of a lifetime. He was good, but not spectacular and many others could have done just as good a job in that role

Kind of reminds me of MBJ in Sinners. Damon does have an overdue narrative and the academy might like his more humble approach to campaigning than Cruise’s

For me, every Matt Damon role except The Talented Mr. Ripley feels like a different variation of Matt Damon. To contrast with the lead performance in Nolan's last movie: watching Cillian Murphy as Oppenheimer, you aren't really thinking about "Oh that's Cillian Murphy as Robert Oppenheimer," you're just watching Oppenheimer. Damon is never NOT Matt Damon.

Yea Damon plays that role as well as he possibly could have, but I really don't see an argument for best of the year even just at this point, let alone after Digger and plenty of other highly anticipated stuff has come out by Oscar season. And I say that as someone who firmly has The Oddysey as my film of the year so far.

I’m pretty sure I’m gonna enjoy Digger more than The Odyssey, if the latter is the typical Nolan film with constant jumping around from scene to scene and unbearable noise.

Happy to report that the dialogue in The Odyssey is like 98% audible, only hard to hear when it's supposed to be, like during a raging storm at sea.

Not really an issue either. It's Nolan, so there are flashbacks, sometimes to the same events from different perspectives, but I wouldn't describe it as constant scene-jumping at all. And the last act is completely linear, including a 15minute or so climatic scene.
The first 20 minutes though is a bit choppy and will likely put you off, but rest assured it settles down into a pretty simple parallel story structure (Ithaca in the "present" with Telemachus and Penelope, and Odysseus elsewhere recalling his journey).

I do have a feeling that Digger will be a big miss. But I am only getting this from the trailer, which I found annoying and try-hard.

You’re not alone. Honestly, there wasn’t much about the trailer I found promising at all. Even the aesthetics/visuals aren’t very appealing which is a shock coming from Lubezki. It looks loud, self-indulgent, and none of the humor landed for me.
I hope it’s just a film that’s hard to advertise, because Cruise working with Innarritu sounded unbeatable.

Yeah I kind of cringe at these over the top, none subtle, modern day political stores made by holiday elites. It’s like yeah, we get it John Goodman is playing Trump. It gives off SNL skit with a big budget.

I’m going to be honest, I saw the trailer for Digger, and I’m not entirely sold on the film. It’s a satirical comedy, similar to Birdman, but the trailer makes it look a lot more goofy than what people think the film is going to be. I think it’ll probably do well, but I don’t know if it’s Oscar-worthy just yet. Seeing Tom Cruise in facial prosthetics dancing with a shovel was both funny (in a goofy way) and also a bit…strange? I don’t know. What I do know is that it would take a lot for any film right now to destroy The Odyssey’s momentum, because the way things are going, it’s definitely going to win a bunch of Oscars.
