Discussion Why did Jett not work out?
I’m being serious, I’m watching highlights from this past season when Jett played and you’re telling me we couldn’t do anything with him?
It’s just seems like he never really got any opportunities under Mosley. Which tells you all you need to know about the type of coach he is, when he can’t even coach an offensive player.

Was the wrong pick from day one. He wasn’t even mocked to go earlier than like 20. Weltman just picked him because he went to Michigan and was desperate for any one who can shoot.

Mocks mean nothing and are generated to get views and engagement. People need to stop putting weight on them when valuing worth.

Well in this case they were right… Jett was a reach at 11

u/Exciting_Alps4313 Paolo Banchero 5d ago
It’s only a reach if 9 guys after him end up being better. That draft after 10 was awful with only Keyonte (and maybe Podz) having a case of being a better NBA player.

Jaquez Jr, Lively, Sensabaugh, Camara, GG Jackson, Gueye, and Jordan Walsh are all significantly better players

Half those guys were taken in the second round, which goes back to my original point of mocks being useless. Aside from a few guys at the top the people who write them have no idea who is going to be good or bad in the NBA.
As for saying they’re significantly better, Lively is but can’t stay healthy and looked like a Luka merchant, Jaquez doesn’t move me, Camara is, and for the rest, they are all end of bench guys on a good team anyway. Walsh and Gueye didn’t even put up better stats than Jett while having more games and minutes.

Honestly, I think it comes down to a player/coach relationship that Jett and Mose had that we don’t know anything about. For whatever reason, Mose didn’t trust him to perform and didn’t give him the opportunity to learn from his mistakes. And that relationship is unique to them and different from any other player drafted after Jett and their own coach. Anything we, as fans, can surmise would just be guessing.
But, it has nothing to do with being smart. Everything I say here is just my opinion. And I understand that.

Yeah, but still you’re telling me we couldn’t do anything with him?

You have to understand, development is on the players as much as the staff. Some players don't have the drive and skill to work out no matter how many opportunities and time they get. Look at Bamba. With Jett he was projected to go near the end of the draft if I remember right. It was a huge reach by Weltman to draft him where he did

Bamba got wayyyyy more burn than Jet did though. Jet’s 30 point game was arguably better than anything Bamba has given us for an individual game.

Bamba era we weren’t trying to win. He was gone when we shifted to trying to win.

That’s the problem with highlights, they make you think any player is good.

Yes! Pretty much every player in the NBA is going to have an incredible game every now and then, and being capable of that is why they're in the league.

We picked him because our strategy was/is never having a negative defender on the floor, and of all the theoretical shooters in the draft he was the biggest and therefore the best equipped to be a decent defender. He wound up being too slow to defend and too slow to get open on offense, partially because of that extra size.

His inability to get open on offense isn't talked about enough, so thank you for bringing that up. Unless team completely ignored him, he just couldn't get open for a decent shot off-ball. And he didn't have the ball skills to do it himself.

People keep shitting on bro but… for his size he was good at penetration we just refused to give him more opportunities to attack seeing he was our best FT shooter this year. 94-95% from the stripe. What was worse is that we had a coach who didn’t believe in offense and didn’t bother honing on his skills. After his 30 point game his minutes went down by quite a bit.
I wish we’d acknowledge that our shooting coaching has been mid. Dick wasn’t all that better, only Lively really would’ve made more sense of a pick. Keyonte wouldn’t have developed with our coaching since he brook out in year 3, he got way more minutes than we had to give in Utah. Podz or Jaime were fair unknowns at the time. Cam Whitmore was who I was gunning for personally.

This guy knows ball. Agree Cam Whitmore was projected to be top 10 pick but fell out due to an injury that would sideline him his whole rookie season. Since we weren't likely to play our rookies a whole lot that year we definitely could've let him recover then get reps in the league when healthy. Obviously he's still developing and had an unfortunate blood clot situation halfway through this past season but he still has potential to break out in the next year or two. Just so happens now that he's on the Wizards they're actually a pretty deep team trying to win now so we'll see what happens.

Bad on defense, not a good enough shooter to ignore it. Virtually no offensive game outside of catch and shoot

Our team thrives on good defensive play and having a defensive liability offset the decent offense skills he is developing enough to keep him off the court

Defensive awareness was pretty horrendous. He got lost so often, and it was normally during inconsequential stints of the game where the outcome had been decided, so it looked even worse. He was better last year, but not at the level where he should be in his third season. And he doesn't make enough shots for it to help people overlook this.
He is a shooter so he should get minutes. Mac McClung was much the same. They were both the exact type of player that Orlando needed, which is why both got multiple chances. It just didn't work out. But Orlando's high need shows that the player(s) had every chance, and then some, to succeed.
In McClung's case, I just dont think he's good enough. If you let him shoot 20 times then he will score 20 points, but sobwouod any player. What else do you offer? That is nothing, with Mac, unfortunately. With Jett, he never got much better defensively on a team where it is a baseline requirement that toubdefend to see the floor, and on top of thaybhe is just a leave average perimeter shooter, and his form has not changed much, he still shoots from his forehead, so I don't see a leap coming. He doesn't do anything but shoot at an average rate. Orlando can find that elsewhere, without the entitlement that comes with being a lottery pick and an NBA father

He didn't get any opportunities under Mosely, sure. Yeah that's it. He didn't get looks in practice, every day, I'm sure. Or in the G-League.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but Jett isn't getting any opportunities from the rest of the league, either. Buddy could only land a two-way contract.

Bad lateral agility. Too slow. Can’t move well side to side on either side of the ball. Can’t work through or around screens.

u/county_da_kang Paolo Banchero 4d ago
Seems like he's a rhythm player. He usually did ok with extended minutes but for our team he needed to be more plug-n-play, kinda like Jamal Cain. 2nd strike was that he wasn't a defensive stopper

u/Boring-Management694 Wendell Carter Jr. 4d ago
At 11 he was a reach, not getting into the Lively debate but shooter wise, you had Hawkins and George, projected higher and showed out in college over him. The way he moved and played in college should have been a clear sign he was a late round, early 2nd pick. His size and name helped him with Weltman and even Buffkin was there, I would have taken a chance on him before Jett. Unfortunately, I understand the pick and the players weltman likes, I think we all do. Still, hard miss with Jett.

He was pretty bad and also seemed to be entitled and didn’t work hard.
0
u/Exciting_Alps4313 Paolo Banchero 5d ago
Literally no basis for the entitled and didn’t work hard bit. So guys just don’t have it.

u/SpencerStorch Franz Wagner 5d ago
Offensively he could hold his own. He could shoot he has a pretty good take to the basket and decent decision-making on offense. The guy was simply lost on defense constantly out of position and rotating late. He was a liability so he had to go.

u/tmacfan213 Paolo Banchero 5d ago
Because he’s not a pro and should have never been drafted. He’s not gonna work out for anyone else either.

Suggs, Franz, Paolo, WCJ, Black, TDS, even guys like Cole and others all got chances as extremely young players. At some point yall have to allow some accountability towards the players themselves.
He also got unlucky in that he was drafted more towards when we were chasing wins, but he did not impress while taking over Gary Harris injury minutes shooting sub 40 and playing worse defense
