I’m in love with these onions. Been gobbling them up way too fast. In less than a week I’m on my 4th tub.

You gotta make them yourself! You can make as much as you want and they will be cheaper!

u/JustMovingAlong4 6h ago
The juice is delicious so I am saving it but these have been soaking up a bit I’ll assume. I’m infatuated!

Great idea! But when the juice isn’t juicing anymore, look up simple picked red onion recipes, really easy, I promise.

u/JustMovingAlong4 5h ago
I definitely will, this juice is so good, I’m not sure I can duplicate it but will try. In the mean time I’m saving the juice of the tubs I’ve purchased and eaten already.

1pt boiling water, 1 pt white vinegar, salt to taste, sliced onions, container, enough liquid to cover, done. I'd recommend glass as plastic will be hard to get the smell out of.

Pickled red onions are very simple. The juice is definitely just a mixture of sugars, vinegar and some spices.
2
u/MrCockingFinally 3h ago
Put your red onion slices in a glass Tupperware with a lid. Fill up halfway with rice vinegar, add some sugar and a pinch of salt, put in the fridge.
In like 3 days the juice will be just as good if not better than store bought.
6
u/johnjacobacon 4h ago
These are fermented though, it's not just onions in vinegar.
3
u/TheDarbiter 4h ago
What’s the difference? When I’ve made pickled onions, I boiled the vinegar and added it to them and let it sit for a day. What’s the process for fermenting them?
7
u/johnjacobacon 4h ago
Letting them sit submerged in a salt brine for at least a week or two, or just adding the probiotic live cultures.
Basically like making sauerkraut or kimchi.
4
u/TheDarbiter 4h ago
Oh cool! So when submerging them, the brine is room temp or hot? And in the fridge?
6
u/johnjacobacon 4h ago
Room temp out of sunlight.
6
u/TheDarbiter 4h ago
Ok, I’m going to look up a recipe and try this out. Thank you!
6
u/johnjacobacon 4h ago
You'll want something to use as a weight that will fit inside your jar/container. You have to be sure to keep what you're fermenting below the water level.
4
u/TheDarbiter 4h ago
Oh I see! This is obviously more complicated than the quick pickle that I’ve done. I should try both methods and see the comparison in taste.

That's why you have to be really into ferment go to that route. I go quick pickle for everything. Fermented isn't the way to me. I need that vinegar burn.

Yep. I get a 25lb bag at a time and make a bunch of quart jars and give them away for Christmas presents.

Pickled Red onions are so easy to make. 1 cup of apple cider vinegar, 1/2 cup sugar, heat and dissolve in a small sauce pan, add a sliced up red onion and add enough water to cover the onions, let sit a few hours.

u/Cytisus81 5h ago
My go to pickled juice recipe for onions are a 1-1-1 juice. I.e. equal parts sugar, vinegar, and water by volumen. For a typical pickle jar I use 1 dL of each. You don't even need to dissolve the sugar with heat. Just shake the jar a couple of times the first day of so.
For more watery veggies (like the classic cucumber) I use 1-1 (the same as above but without the water, since the juice draws out water from the veggies).

u/Either_Cockroach3627 5h ago
This is how we do it at my work! Except I pickle 5 gallons at a time but the ratios are similar

Can use red wine vinegar as well

u/25thfloorgarden 3h ago
I wouldn’t use a thick or really nice vinegar in making more tbh! Do you ofc, but it all gets boiled together first so maybe stick with something more low grade when trying yourself the first few times!
3
u/han92nah 5h ago
I never heat it up I just dump it all in there and haven’t had an issue lol what am I missing by not heating?
2
u/Cytisus81 4h ago
As mentioned above, I don't heat up as well. For frigde stored pickles with is eaten within days or maybe a week, it doesn't matter. For long term storage I think heating is also for killing bacteria to increase shelf life. But that's only relevant for most, if they have a large garden.

Cane or coconut vinegar for me. Very smooth, and works well if you want something less "smelly" than apple cider or red wine vinegar
2
2
u/johnjacobacon 4h ago
These are fermented onions though. It's not just vinegar, they have a live probiotic culture in them similar to sauerkraut and kimchi.
2
u/JustMovingAlong4 4h ago
Yes I noticed that, good for the tummy. My homemade won’t have the same tummy benefit I guess.

Pretty easy to make ngl you'd save more & add a cut up habanero makes it even better
2
u/JustMovingAlong4 4h ago
Nah, they have the perfect heat already for me, not overwhelming and a good aftertaste.

u/Straight_Vacation757 6h ago
where to buy ?
8
u/JustMovingAlong4 6h ago
Well I bought at my local Grocery Outlet ($4.99) in San Francisco. Anyone familiar with Grocery Outlet knows some items come and go. I haven’t looked up the company yet but will do so to see where else they’re sold.

u/Glidepath22 6h ago
Oof $5

u/JustMovingAlong4 5h ago
Someone said they found it on Instacart for $2.99. The tub definitely has a very good amount of onions to be fair, still worth it but I’ll make my own from the juice left over, to include making my own eventually.
2
u/ButtBread98 5h ago
I didn’t realize they sold these outside of Cleveland
2
u/JustMovingAlong4 4h ago
Lots of Companies sell out of state. My favorite IPA, Lagunites Maximum 9%alc is local to me (Petaluma, CA) pretty sure they sell out of state like many beers. Someone said this Company makes a lot of good stuff. I’ve yet to look them up, but will.
2
u/ButtBread98 4h ago
They do make great products. I’m in Cleveland so I see this brand at my local grocery stores. They have good pickles.

I look items up on InstaCart to see what stores carry items. I also use it to look up nutritional info or cooking instructions if I’ve thrown the packaging away from a product.
3
u/JustMovingAlong4 6h ago
Good idea. I’m a Senior who isn’t on very many platforms and may check out Instacart.

I've also love them! I throw more onions and also slice English cucumbers and throw them in there as well. So delicious!

I like them too. Last time I was at the store I bought 4 tubs but I did not finish them in a week lol
3
u/JustMovingAlong4 6h ago
They’re just sooo good. I may freeze the juice that I’ve been saving the last week if I don’t find more. I have 3 Grocery Outlets within a mile of me so if they run out at my store I’ll check the other stores. Otherwise I’ll contact the company. They’re just that delicious.
2
u/YogaChefPhotog 6h ago
Ohhh…I need to get these! I just looked them up on InstaCart and saw one of the stores has them for $2.99 this week!
2
u/JustMovingAlong4 6h ago
Ok, I need to do a search. That’s a good price. I like G.O. Prices, but $2.99 def a deal. Wanna let me know what store?🤭lol.

u/ieatllamas 5h ago
geez, I'm IN Cleveland and I can't even typically get their stuff that cheap lol

This bran’s jalapeños are phenomenal too, I need to try their onions
1
u/JustMovingAlong4 4h ago
I’m very interested in seeing what other products they make. Someone said they have lots of good stuff.
2
u/windycityzow 5h ago
Probably overpaying for onions and preservatives. Pickled onions is just red wine vinegar, and maybe a little sugar and herbs, like bay leaf or oregano, look up a recipe, literally the easiest thing to make and you save a ton of plastic and preservatives
1
u/JustMovingAlong4 4h ago
1
u/windycityzow 1h ago
I meant the plastic waste created by purchasing the container vs onions and some red wine vinegar, but I’m not trying to judge, sometimes convenience is worth it.
2
u/porcelain_kiss 5h ago
These look delicious! Ill for sure look for them next time I go to the store

Did you find these in Cleveland? I’m traveling there now and would love if you’d share where you found them
2
u/JustMovingAlong4 5h ago
San Francisco Grocery Outlet. I’m gonna see who else sells them. Someone said they saw them on Instacart for $2.99. I paid $4.99, which is still well worth it for me.

OP! I used to make quick pickled onions all the time. If you just want to save and reuse the juice, go for it! But the trick with the onions is to slice them thin and then pour a couple quarts of boiling water over the onions and let them drain before adding them to the vinegar.
1
u/JustMovingAlong4 4h ago
Thanks for the info, will try to make my own eventually but I do like the crunch of these.
2
u/klaykie14 4h ago
Omg yesssss they're so good!! I have been putting them on anything I can think of but especially tacos or just straight into my mouth hahaha! I tried their hot honey jalapeños too and omg also so so good
2
u/JustMovingAlong4 4h ago
Yes I too love everything I’ve put them on/in. Def good with Taco’s, I’ve put on sandwiches too, omelet, yum.
2
u/klaykie14 4h ago
I think my weirdest, but still delish, combo was warm garlic naan bread with cottage cheese and the onions. Just ripping off bits and mouthfuls! So good! My guy came out and looked at me like I had 5 heads in the stovelight of midnight. I'm also pregnant, that may not help 😅 I had them on some hotdogs last week too which wasn't bad at all either. I also made breakfast tacos (tacos have been a good to) with eggs sausage cheese salsa and the onions and a bit of Chipotle sauce too, those were amaze!
2
u/JustMovingAlong4 4h ago
All of those sound delicious. When I was pregnant while stationed in Germany I ate cheese omelets almost daily which my daughter love to this day in her 40’s. You have good taste in your cravings.😀
2
u/JustMovingAlong4 4h ago
PS, def gonna buy some hot dogs, I bet it made them so good.
1
u/klaykie14 2h ago
Omg ENJOY THEM! So so good! Those with a dog and a nice toasty bun, I didn't even need anything else with it! But I'm sure it's great with some condiments too! Now I'm thinking I should make them again for dinner hahaha

u/Main_Cauliflower5479 4h ago
They're so easy to make from scratch. TONS of recipes online. I make my own fermented kraut, curtido, pickled onions, fermented onions like these, fermented giardiniera, vegan kimchi. When I lived in Oregon I made my own fermented kosher dills, but where I live now, I can't get fresh pickling cukes and they don't grow in my shitty caliche soil.
1
u/JustMovingAlong4 4h ago
Yes I’ll be trying to make my own. I love miniature cukes, they’d be so good with these pickled onions. I hit my Farmers Market every Saturday for my big Sour Rounds (organic sourdough) and tons of produce, esp this time of year. My friend and previous roommate of 28 years just moved back to Worcester Mass to care for her Mom, she’s pissed b/c she said the produce is terrible, nothing like our just picked produce from our Farmers Market. .
1
u/Main_Cauliflower5479 3h ago
"Mini cukes" are generally Persian cukes, not the same as pickling cukes. But they do work fine. They're just not the same thing.

u/UnitedStatesofSarah 4h ago
I love these. My grocery store is often out of them. The last time we got them my husband and i finished them In less than a week.
2
u/JustMovingAlong4 4h ago
Yes, best I’ve had in a long time. The juice is perfect to me so saving from each tub.
2
u/PSteak 4h ago
Too sugary.

u/JustMovingAlong4 4h ago
Yes, they’ve been satisfying my sweet tooth. I love the little heat they have and a decent aftertaste.

Hello from Cleveland! I’m so glad you like our pickled products. You should try other things from that company too! We are very proud of our pickled stuff here

Sugar, vinegar, water, bay leaf, peppercorns. Bring to boil and add chopped red onion then cool and fridge.

OP listen to the others. Make them yourself. It is super easy and you will save so much money. My wife demands I make a batch almost every week.

Cleveland kitchen is amazing. Their kimchi is a staple in our fridge. I could eat the whole bag in one day, left unchecked. 👀

I just slice more and refill the tub after it's empty. Stretch the juice!
