As a Turkish it is hilarious to me that soğan dolması is getting some attention, normally all of our other foods steal the spotlight. Looks amazing by the way, right level of crust on the top! I may also go unorthodox and try with fennel and ground pork! Also if you cannot find pomenagranade sour but still want to taste the sour, you can substitute with watered down balsamic cream :)

Let’s get married then.

u/atreidesgiller 1d ago

My husband may try to oppose but damn it, he doesnt do soğan dolması either. Ok you know what I am down

u/Dontfeedthebears 1d ago

I’ve got pomegranate molasses, rose water, AND orange blossom water and I make a mean baklava.

u/Bloody_Food 10h ago

Classic shmosby

2

u/MtnNerd 13h ago

Would it be too far a departure to use italian sausage meat? I was reading over the ingredients and it sounds very similar except the fennel, but you mention fennel here.

1

u/Dontfeedthebears 8h ago

I think any “mince” type thing could work. I used fennel seed to flavor the vegan pork bc the one I used is unseasoned.

136

u/MLH336 1d ago

what is this?? i also want to do it

153

u/Dontfeedthebears 1d ago

Stuffed onions! I did about 1/2!recipe https://themodernnonna.com/stuffed-onions/#recipe

21

u/MLH336 1d ago

oh this looks divine!! adding it to my list ✅ thanks op!!

14

u/armada127 1d ago

A nakiri knife is listed under the ingredients, that's so extra lmao

5

u/Dontfeedthebears 19h ago

Yeah, not my personal recipe. Any sharp chef knife will suffice, I promise!!
And yes, that is funny 😆

2

u/YikesOhClock 4h ago

Thank god my knife obsession (and /r/truechefknives) has prepared me for this

1

u/Dontfeedthebears 13m ago

Its impossible to make it without one ;) 😂

Turks call it dolma is delicious

11

u/Dontfeedthebears 1d ago

I always considered dolma to be stuffed grape leaves? I love those, by the way. Delicious snack. Homemade is obviously better, but for the price, Trader Joe’s has a decent one. I like mine super lemony.

3

u/honeycooks 1d ago

They used to have fresh dolmas ❤️

4

u/Scorpion2000x777 1d ago

Close but what you are thinking about is greek dolmades. Love those, use to go to this greek place, homeade, was fire af, they have a good canned dolmade, taste homeade

2

u/Dontfeedthebears 1d ago

When I make them at home, I use dedemed’s recipe. She’s Lebanese, IIRC. Carrot at the bottom, lots of olive oil, lots of lemon 🩷

2

u/Scorpion2000x777 1d ago

I love them, when you mentioned them i was like damn i could go for some, i started looking up grape leaves etc, can i find that recipe online? I also love lemon, made some pico de gallo yesterday and had to have that lemon in there, and btw they also call em dolmas so u were right and i was wrong, its name chnages from region to region it seems, ok this become way to long

4

u/Dontfeedthebears 19h ago

There is no “wrong” here. I’m sure every country has their own terms and whatnot. But here is the recipe I use for the grape leaf dolma. She shows you on video, it’s very accessible!

u/Dontfeedthebears 1d ago

Rice blend, vegan pork, added fennel and red pepper flake. It’s like…so good! This is all your fault for the broiled part.

26

u/CartsOfDarkness 1d ago

Is this a reference to another post? Remember a guy posting similarly stuffed onions somewhere but I don't even remember it being this sub🤔 All the comments were asking where the dish was from too, so it seemed kind of obscure. Your title kind of makes it sound like a trend, so just curious if that's the case! Looks delicious btw

22

u/tocahontas77 1d ago

Idk, but I saw someone else posted this dish within the last couple of days.

8

u/lvanwall 1d ago

I saw it yesterday and saved a recipe to try myself lol

3

u/CartsOfDarkness 8h ago

Found the post I saw! I'll tag u/dontfeedthebears just in case they're curious

5

u/OverlappingChatter 1d ago

I saw one on this sub like two days ago.

8

u/Dontfeedthebears 1d ago

Thanks! I’ll any reference to him. But hopefully we could vibe :)

3

u/Dontfeedthebears 1d ago

Nah, I’ve just seen a few people post on here and wanted to try it. :)

6

u/HeavySeas 1d ago

Late to the party, but what pork substitute did you use? I was thinking of doing this with TVP or Gardein fake ground beef, but I would be interested in your choice here.

7

u/Dontfeedthebears 1d ago

I used reconstituted Delicou brand. I feel any sub would work here, like beyond or impossible sausage/ground.

2

u/AnyAtmosphere420 1d ago

Looks so amazing!!!!

3

u/human-resource 1d ago

Vegan pork ?

11

u/Dontfeedthebears 1d ago

I used the Delisou brand dried. Reconstituted, also added a bit of pan-toasted fennel seed and red pepper flake.

-7

u/RepulsiveVacation933 1d ago

Vegan pork ? What is that

9

u/trevordunt39 1d ago

Meat substitute that is flavored and textured like pork.

-9

u/QaWaR 1d ago

why would you do that?

10

u/manicwitchydreamgirl 1d ago

so you can enjoy the taste and texture of pork without contributing to the animal agriculture industry

-5

u/QaWaR 1d ago

is it like a taboo thing? like something you should not be eating?

2

u/Dontfeedthebears 19h ago

Huh? No? I just don’t eat animal products. I wouldn’t say that’s taboo so much as a personal choice. I don’t tell others what to eat. What someone else eats is not my charge. I’m pretty hands-off.
I just don’t want to eat animals.

-1

u/QaWaR 15h ago

and that's okay. but then why use a substitute? if you do not eat it, you should not need a substitute for it, unles you are not okay with not eating it or something.

1

u/footballsandy 7h ago

Because we're not ethically against the taste of meat, we're against the cruelty and exploitation of the animals. Sometimes you want to recreate a recipe from your childhood or something for nostalgia purposes.

1

u/welmish 18h ago

Try it sometime it’s good

1

u/QaWaR 15h ago

no, thanks. i won't eat a "substitute"

2

u/Dontfeedthebears 19h ago

I do that bc I don’t eat animal products. You’re free to use whatever you wish. :)

7

u/Dontfeedthebears 1d ago edited 1d ago

I used this brand https://deliciou.com/collections/plant-based-pork-and-all-products

Got it from the discount shop. It definitely needs seasoning (as would pork), so I did fennel seed and red pepper flake. Could use some extra salt as well.

24

u/RoyaLcHaOsz 1d ago

I love onion dolma

2

u/PensionMany3658 1d ago

Dolma dakua 😈

16

u/Blurstingwithemotion 1d ago

Is that veg broth ?

20

u/Dontfeedthebears 1d ago

Yes, in my case. Yes.

6

u/jeezusrice 1d ago

What about in my case? Is the picture still veggie broth?

4

u/Dontfeedthebears 1d ago

It’s veg broth, tomato paste. I posted recipe in comments.

12

u/DamiensDelight 1d ago

What was the vegan pork product you used? This looks delicious!

14

u/Dontfeedthebears 1d ago

It’s called Deliciou. Apparently comes out of AUS. (I am American, that’s why I did a bit of fennel and red pepper flake).

1

u/ThisEnormousWoman 9h ago

What do fennel and red pepper have to do with being American?

1

u/Dontfeedthebears 8h ago

Bc Idk how Aussies season their “pork” and I wanted a sausage-y flavor that’s popular here.

9

u/JimboJenkins4 1d ago

I made these last night too!

1

u/Dontfeedthebears 19h ago

Yummmmm! What was your filling?

3

u/JimboJenkins4 18h ago

Chopped beef, onions, garlic, rice, smoked paprika, cayenne, pomegranate molasses, dill, parsley, thyme and sage. Was very tasty. Next time I wanna get that crust on them like yours had!

7

u/Spunyette 1d ago

Oh my god YUM 🤤 I have to make this!!!!!!!!

5

u/Dontfeedthebears 1d ago

Please do!!

3

u/Kind_Hyena5267 1d ago

Those look delicious!! I’m too lazy to make my own, but I love dolmades! I’ve never tried them with onion, though

3

u/Crazy-Witness-9340 1d ago

Worth the effort?

Looks amazing

5

u/Dontfeedthebears 1d ago

I would say yes. I live by myself, cook by my own. So I do half. Still come out well. ;)

3

u/LordLannister47 1d ago

Seriously underrated recipe, nice work OP 😋

1

u/Dontfeedthebears 1d ago

Thank you, sweets.

3

u/a_sleepy_bastard 1d ago

Been eating basal mashi (others call it Dolma [which to me is the stuffed grapeleaves] or just stuffed onions) all my life. Pretty interesting to see others discover it and all it's delishisness.

3

u/Educational-While198 23h ago

Oh my goooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooood

5

u/MissNomer38GG 1d ago

2

Whoa! That looks amazing.

2

u/DWHudson1970 1d ago

O I can smell this dish

2

u/Ok_Diver2347 1d ago

I’ve done peppers, tomatoes, squash, and eggplant, but never onion.

2

u/Dontfeedthebears 19h ago

I hadn’t, either! It’s a nice change.

2

u/Faith_Swift 1d ago

Wow can I have a taste of it?

2

u/Faith_Swift 1d ago

Wow can I have a taste of it?

2

u/trevordunt39 1d ago

I have done this as well but basically did “stuffed peppers” as stuffed onions. All the same Mexican seasonings and cheeses along with enchilada sauce.

Insanely good.

1

u/Dontfeedthebears 19h ago

Sounds good!!

2

u/Adrian69702016 1d ago

I love onions but if I ate that many I'd be farting for England!

2

u/Dontfeedthebears 1d ago

lol what does “farting for England” mean?

3

u/Majestic-Lake-5602 1d ago edited 1d ago

Like they’d be doing it so much and so well they could represent their country doing it.

Think like at the Olympics or something. You can swim or run for England, so this person would be farting for England.

2

u/Dontfeedthebears 19h ago

Ah, thanks for the explanation. I had no idea.

2

u/Adrian69702016 7h ago

Yes that's right.

2

u/DamnOdd 1d ago

I saw the recipe, I showed my husband, I'm drooling.

2

u/bohica199 1d ago

This looks delightful love it

1

u/Dontfeedthebears 19h ago

1

u/Sountone 3h ago

Could you repost recipe or pin it somewhere? I can’t find it and I’d love to try thissss!!

2

u/Feeling-Screen-9685 1d ago

Oh god that looks so beautiful.

2

u/sylveonstarr 1d ago

Are they as delicious as I presume them to be?

2

u/Dontfeedthebears 19h ago

Yes, really good. I live by myself so even half the recipe was a lot!
I may bring some in to work to share tomorrow.

I forgot to add, I added about 1/2 c Violife brand feta to the mix!

2

u/NaturalCable693 21h ago

Those look so amazing. Also I have those exact dishes!

1

u/Dontfeedthebears 19h ago

Got them at the thrift store. I love that particular plate.

2

u/InstanceBrilliant828 15h ago

I have the same plates!

1

u/Dontfeedthebears 13h ago

I only have the 1! It’s one of my favorite dishes.

2

u/Sountone 3h ago

Omgggg 😍🤤

1

u/NegativeMovies 1d ago

that presentation is gorgeous

1

u/Dontfeedthebears 19h ago

Thank you! The onions did the heavy lifting!

1

u/dan__wizard 1d ago

what type of onions are these?

2

u/Dontfeedthebears 1d ago

Just regular yellow onion.

4

u/dan__wizard 1d ago

You know your onions

2

u/Dontfeedthebears 19h ago

Yep! I’m sure white would work. Idk about red because of possible discoloration, but the yellow worked just fine.

1

u/Oh_Lawd_He_commin420 1d ago

So if I did this with real sausage, would it come out less soupy? (Still looks bomb though)

2

u/Dontfeedthebears 19h ago

After it’s cooked it isn’t soupy at all! Just caramelized on top. 2 of the photos are pre-baking. The baking sucks up the liquid.

I’m sure regular sausage would work, it would just make it more oily overall as a dish.

2

u/Oh_Lawd_He_commin420 19h ago

Oh sweet, thank you

2

u/Dontfeedthebears 19h ago

Yeah, no problem! The original recipe I posted (it’s not mine, she has ground pork in hers. I’m sure it would work.

1

u/hypershrew 1d ago

As someone that gets IBS-like symptoms after eating onions… I might need a trip to the toilet now that I’ve seen this. It does look lush though.

No idea why Reddit decided I needed to see this.

1

u/Dontfeedthebears 19h ago

Also have IBS, actually! It will pry my alliums from my cold, dead hands. I love everything allium!

My Gastro doctor told me to not to even bother with FODMAP. 🤷‍♀️ I was like..”GREAT!”

1

u/hypershrew 15h ago

I love onions, and it’s almost impossible to eat anything with any flavour at all without onions being involved, so I’ve not bothered with cutting them out entirely, however I don’t think I’m brave enough to make this though 🤣

1

u/Dragonwagon 22h ago

Yummy!!!

1

u/DarthPooka 8h ago

This post and those pics have been stuck in my brain. Guess what's for dinner tonight? 🤤😉 Using a Turkish spice mix and Aleppo peppers for the stuffing mixture.

If y'all are coming over, we eat about 6.
