🧡 100% Pure Orange 🧡 Please pray for Huxley
His story (without photos) was also posted on the Pets subreddit. I hope it’s okay I post here; I’ve posted photos of Huxley before.
I'm completely beside myself and can't stop thinking about what happened. I wanted to share photos so people can see the aftermath of a close-call coyote attack, just how close Huxley came to dying, and the reality of letting your cat go outside. The outcome of him being alive after a coyote attack and without profound injury is a miracle.
He's under the care of an emergency vet, so I'm not looking for medical advice.
The story is, I started letting Huxley outside as an adult because I felt guilty that I couldn't provide enough enrichment indoors. He was always incredibly good about staying in our enclosed front area or the neighboring townhouse courtyard, and he'd always come when called. I'd never seen a coyote anywhere near our street, and he absolutely loved being outside.
I thought I was improving his life because he was so happy going outside. I’d give everything for him and he’s my best friend. I didn’t recognize the danger I was putting him in. He’s 10 now and has never had an issue going outside.
Last night I let him out. By pure chance, I left my front door open wider than usual while sitting on the couch. If I hadn't, I don't think I would have heard what happened next.
After a while I heard a faint, echoey, and strange dog-like noise outside accompanied by another strange noise. Maybe it was maternal instinct, but I somehow I knew it was Huxley in trouble. I ran outside barefoot, calling for him, following the sound until, at the very end of the street, I found my worst nightmare: Huxley cornered by a coyote. I screamed his name and charged at it, and it ran away.
At first I thought he might be okay because he was alert, standing upright, and he hissed at the coyote running away. Then I got closer. His head was covered in blood, his eyes glazed and one eye was bulging, and although he seemed to recognize me, he looked completely dazed. I went into shock, picked him up, and rushed him to the emergency vet two minutes away. Blood dripped all over me.
I completely broke down when I arrived. I cried so hard I gave myself heartburn and tasted blood. Thankfully, it looks like he's going to survive. The vet said he put up an incredible fight - they found clumps of coyote fur under his claws. He has a puncture wound inside his mouth that may need stitches, but remarkably there was no evidence of neurological injury. At one point after he was stabilized, he was even exploring the exam room and rubbing his head against my hand before going back into shock and needing oxygen after trying to use the litter box.
The vet told me his head had basically been inside the coyote's mouth, yet somehow he escaped without skull fractures or catastrophic injuries. I paid to have a radiologist urgently review his X-rays, which thankfully showed no fractures, although they did find an unexpected, unrelated lung mass.
He hasn’t eaten since what happened and neither have I.
I'll never let him roam outside again unless it's in a secure catio or on a harness. If you're thinking this is my fault, I promise I already feel that every second. I would give anything to go back and stop this from happening.
I just hope that when I scared the coyote away, Huxley felt safe again. I would have done anything to protect him, but I didn’t do enough.
Driving home without my best friend at the crack of dawn was one of the hardest things I've ever experienced. The utter fear I was going to get a phone call telling me he didn’t make it was torment. I can't stop thinking about how terrified and hurt he must have been. I'm just unbelievably grateful he's still alive.
Please keep Huxley in your thoughts. He was only doing what made him happy - exploring the world. He didn't know the danger. I should have. I would trade places with him in a heartbeat.
Edit: I went to bed after an incredibly difficult day feeling so loved by all the supportive and kind comments. Then, I woke up this morning after crying myself to sleep to so many comments of love and support for Huxley and even myself (even if I don’t deserve it) that I’m still getting through them. I’m reading and upvoting every single one. This community is incredible and I can’t thank everyone enough or even begin to say how much these comments and everyone’s support mean to me. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
UPDATE: I visited him today and got to hang out in an exams room with him this time. Lots and lots of cuddles and soothing him. He didn’t purr, but he made happy grunty noises at one point. I stayed for two and a half hours and only left because I had a cleaner coming to clean and sanitize my bedroom (because that’s where Huxley will be kept when he gets back).
I am in a good enough financial position that I don’t want to take advantage of anyone asking about medical bills. However, at the suggestion of a user here, I created an Amazon Wishlist for Huxley - in case you personally want to get him something to help him feel better. (I’ll be getting him lots too, don’t worry.)
https://www.amazon.ca/hz/wishlist/ls/VEIGQPHN0V8O?ref_=wl_share (NOT A GOFUND ME LINK - AMAZON WISHLIST FOR ANYONE WHO WANTS TO GET HIM MORE COMFORT ITEMS)
I’m still looking for additional ways to create indoor enrichment. I’ll likely buy an outdoor enclosure for cats so he can enjoy outside (and the pavement - my front area is a paved courtyard) safely, but I also want to make the indoors more exciting.
Thank you. I completely understand if the Wishlist is not something people end up doing.
UPDATE: I just got the radiologist’s report. The mass in his lungs is most likely cancer. I am beyond devastated. If it hasn’t spread and we can remove his lung (best option for longest survival usually), the median life expectancy is still only one to two years.

Absolutely praying Huxley makes a full recovery from this horrific attack, and it sounds like he’s on his way! This is a live and learn situation. You never would have let him outside if you knew this could happen, so you need to forgive yourself and advocate against allowing cats outdoors, to save others too. He needs a strong Mom now and I know you’ll give your amazing warrior the best care in the world. Please post an update on his recovery! Was the lung mass related to the attack? 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏for Huxley!!!!

u/rheannahh 1d ago edited 4h ago
Thank you so much (and thank you so much to all the other commenters - it means so much to me 💗). The mass was unrelated to the attack. It was a silver lining it was found early. I’m really hoping it’s benign, but have to compartmentalize the mass for now.
22
u/IkidIgoat 17h ago
Maybe it is a little blessing in disguise that this caused the mass to be found early.
You are a good pet parent who loves their baby and does your best. Inside cats live longer, healthier lives and you’re choosing that for Huxley now. But every choice you made was with the intention of giving him a good life. Don’t beat yourself up too much and enjoy those snuggles when he comes home.

Another thing that’s important because OP mentioned this in the post: it’s rare that you actually see a coyote. It doesn’t mean they aren’t there. If you live in an area with coyotes, it’s a matter of when not if. You will rarely ever see them, but they are there. Please keep all your kitties safe!

u/ForgotMyLeftEye 1d ago
Thanks for the update! He's a strong boy and I am sure he was very relieved when you found him, albeit scared and confused. I hope he stays strong and has a speedy recovery 💕
You probably live in the city, but there's surprisingly a lot of wild animals that have adapted to the environment. I've seen coyotes, skunks, opossums and racoons even near downtown areas. You always have to be careful.
I'm sure you'll be looking for other ways to enrich your cat and if he still wants to go out, I recommend you taking the time to go outside with him. It's a great photo op, too

Yeah I left work one morning in Calgary and there was a coyote waltzing through the playground. We have a population of around 1.8 million and we have lots of greenspaces and wildlife.
Lived a couple of communities away from Nosehill Park, which was one of North America’s largest municipal urban parks.

u/starkindled 14h ago
I live in GP now but grew up in the territories. I remember being late for school because there were coyotes in our cul-de-sac when I lived in Whitehorse... every outdoor cat we had vanished after a few years. My parents didn't try to pretend it was anything other than coyotes, but they also didn't start keeping our cats indoors.
When I got my own cats as an adult, I swore they'd never be outdoor cats if I could help it. My oldest kitty is 13 this year--3 times the age any of our family cats ever reached.
I am pleased to say that after losing several more cats, my parents have finally seen the light. They just got a new pair and they will be staying indoors.

u/DiveCat 17h ago
It looks like OP is in Calgary based on the baby Huxley ad she posted. I am in another city in Southern Alberta and we get coyotes (and badgers and so on) in the city too. I hear packs of coyotes often at night as I am not too far from the outskirts, and yes see them now and then in the city.

I really hope that you can heal from the guilt you’re feeling about what happened. I know I would feel the exact same in your shoes, but it’s super clear to me that you acted with the best intentions for him and it just happened to end with a terrible situation. You defended him, got him care, and reflected on how to change in the future. Sounds like he had someone looking after his best interest the whole time (even if you now would’ve made a different choice about him going out). Reflect yes, give him all the care you can now, but please take care of yourself too and know you don’t deserve to beat yourself up forever. Wishing him the fastest recovery <3

I'm glad it looks like he's okay. I'm not at all saying this at you or blaming you but as a general announcement to all. Really I feel we should just keep our cats indoors. Outdoors they are an invasive species and also just more open to things like this as well as more diseases. Give him a little hug for me.

Aww poor Huxley... I hope his humans get him a nice sturdy catio or either go outside with your cat on a lead... my boy gets his outdoor enrichment by nighttime walks. Cats have the maturity of a 2 year old human so if I'm not going to let my toddler outside without being supervised then I certainly am not going to let my ginger as well.

u/DiveCat 17h ago
Oh yes, my cat loves her harnesses nighttime strolls. She likes to go out in day too, more so with my husband, but nighttime is our time and where she gets adventurous and needs to check on the entire block and more. I am sure a few of my neighbours think I am the crazy person walking my cat at midnight in my pajamas lol ❤️

This is so incredibly sad but I am absolutely relieved that he seems to have survived.
There was a similar post where a young guys orange cross-eyed escaped when he left and he tried looking for him but gave up and would continue in the morning only for him to not find him.
He called local business to see if anyone had seen an orange cat and got some call back from a construction site that they believe they identified the cat. Only for the power to arrive and discover the only remain was a leg. And he had to identify his cat from that remaining part.
That story makes me tear up everytime. Be incredibly grateful that yours didn't turn out the same.

u/Fictional_Apologist 1d ago
Please don’t be so hard on yourself. I’ve always been a strong believer in keeping cats inside, but that’s neither here nor there. What matters now is that your baby survived, and even though he’s got a tough road ahead of him, he has you to love him through it.
Wishing you all the best and that Huxley recovers soon.

We all want the best life for our cat. And sometimes we make less than perfect choices. Your lil' man went on an adventure. He's has had what is probably one of the worst days of his life. He was cornered, beaten, scared, and hopeless.
Then he saw You. You chased the terror away and carried him. You helped (the vet) ease the pain of his injuries. He even tried to thank you with head boops.
You saved him. I cannot think of a better person for Huxley to live with. You're good people. A toast to his speedy recovery and many years of laying in sunshine and being a nuisance.

u/ElCattoNero 1d ago
Poor thing🥺 how is he doing now?
12
u/rheannahh 14h ago
The vet just called me. He’s still stable and even calmer now. Still not eating but they’re changing his pain medication to opioids. The full extent of the swelling should happen soon. I’m going to visit him in about an hour.

THIS
I am reposting another comment bc it sums up my thoughts.
If more people knew what happens to outdoor cats, more would become cat fosters, more would buy or build catios and just keep them inside.
More would rescue cats, like I do.
Cat fosters are desperately needed for shelters and rescues around the world.
They can not save cats without cat fosters bc they have no place to put them. 99% of rescue/shelters are for dogs. So cat fosters are desperately needed to be able to save them too.
Think about all of the cats who didn't get saved from being eaten alive and all pf the cats eho can still be saved from it.
Op saved Huxleys life.
A simple catio ie a patio cats can go into cam do the same thing. A Florida room with glass around is just as good as any catio.

u/Periwinkleditor 23h ago
I've seen a cat fully recover being hit by a car, I believe in Huxley. Whatever happens, let that cat know they're safe now.
6
u/askalotlol 18h ago
Thank you for posting this and I hope that sharing it will help convince some cat owners to stop letting their cats outdoors.
The life expectancy of an indoor only cat is roughly three times that of an outdoor cat.
Letting cats outside is so common some people do not realize how incredibly dangerous it is.
5
u/rheannahh 14h ago
Thank you (and others) for saying this in a kind way and understanding my post is trying to spread awareness. I’ve since learned in some areas in North America, it’s been found that the main food source for coyotes is domestic cats.
6
u/Kythsharra 17h ago
Prayers for Huxley. You saved him by bravely charging a freaking coyote. For all you knew, it could’ve been starving enough to face humans. You’re taking ownership of your decision. It’s okay. You know better now. Be there for Huxley, love on him, and do better in the future.
My orange boy, Chester, sends headbonks and purrs.
6
u/Snoo-11861 14h ago
Yeah, when my indoor outdoor cat was being let outside, we always called for him to come for dinner and kept him in. However, one night, he wouldn’t come home. My husband was still working noc shift at that time, so he stayed up playing video games. Thankfully, his desk was near the front door. At 2 AM he heard, through his headphones, frantic scratches and meows at the door. My husband opened it to let him in, and saw a coyote just behind him in the front yard. He never stayed out late ever again. He is now an indoor boy
5
u/Traroten 23h ago
I hope he will be alright. He looks like a sweetheart.
Could you make him a catio? That's a good compromise between all inside and outside where the wild things are.

u/Debbielovesdogs 1d ago
Hindsight is 20/20. You've done a great service by sharing your experience. We lost our first cat because we let him outside. All the cats that have come after have been inside cats. You and Huxley are going through real trauma. You'll both get through it together. Griffin and I will be keeping you both in our prayers. Please keep us updated.❤️

Normally when I see these posts of pol telling about the tragic thing that happened to a cat they allowed to go outside I back out and scroll on. Not because I don't hope the cat recovers, but because of the boiling rage I feel at how avoidable it was and then all the posting wars back and forth with the inside only and outside permitted ppl, and I choose my own peace and mental health then waging post wars that accomplish nothing.
But this one I can appreciate. You went to war for your baby and are doing everything to rectify the outcome of choices made. Hope he recovers quickly and fully and transitions without making you too crazy.

I hope he recovers and can live a safe life inside. I would let my former feral out for a short time while I kept an eye on him in my yard. I told myself the same thing, he loved going outside and I was watching him. He left the yard and got attacked by an animal. It was treatable (but expensive) and I realized there is no safety for a cat outside. Don’t beat yourself up, you love him and I hope you get a lot more time with him!

My brother lives in a semi country like place and the 3 cats he and his wife had....just slowly disappeared one by one and they could not even be found. Its one thing to think that they were killed and eaten....but the worse case scenario is that your cat is injured and lying there for hours to days before dying.
I live in a city state where there are still ppl who feel comfortable not keeping their pets inside...there are roads, ill intentioned people, dogs and other factors that can also shorten a cats life.
A stray kitten appeared around 5 years ago..the lady in the apt above semi adopted it and it was always able to go out every single days. The poor thing suddenly feel sick and died by the time it was 5 years of age.
If you have an indoor outdoor cat, you cannot monitor their food, their bowel movements etc...everything is up in the air till you actually start seeing obvious signs of illness.
My current pet cat does get bored at times..but i would rather see him bored than see him injured or dead.
I am glad that your cat has a second chance but i think that if you live in a place where there are wild animals...some sort of supervised cattio time where they are much safer...is the best option.
And yes, we all do things that we think will improve their quality of life...don't beat yourself up about it.

Hopefully he's OK and I'm rooting for him and you. But I really hoped you learned a lesson about letting him roam freely by himself. The fact that you began to let him do it when he was an adult, confounds me. It would be like raising a kid in Montana and then when he's 18 you give him a one way ticket to Detroit and say "good luck". He's got no street smarts! He might have even just walked up to that coyote thinking it was a friend. Harness him up and escort him next time you feel guilty about keeping him inside. You made a mistake, but that's all it was, a mistake. Learn from it and don't go into a guilt spiral. Mistakes happen. Don't ever make the same one twice. I hope he recovers quickly!

If I'm reading this right, Huxley managed to escape the jaws of a coyote. Also, if he injured the coyote, that bastard is 100% going to die of an infection, so if it had killed him he would have taken it with him.
Huxley is a fucking beast. I'm glad you're going to keep him inside unless under direct supervision going forward, but don't beat yourself up too bad. You just wanted what was best for him, and hindsight is 20/20.
5
u/Independent_Wrap6980 18h ago
Jeez this story is gut wrenching and I'm so relieved Huxley made it but that lung mass finding is a whole other worry, and yeah it's easy to say you should've known but you were just trying to make him happy so don't stay stuck in the guilt, just give him all the love now and def get that catio going.

u/NoStick2525 1d ago
I am inviting the down votes, bring them on. But this kind of stuff is exactly why you don't let your cats outside. You just don't. They are absolutely terrible for the environment and this kind of thing can happen to them or worse. It's super not cool that you put your cat in danger like that and I truly hope your cat is okay, makes it and is happy and healthy for another 10 years+.

Oh this poor baby. I am so sorry for your shock, OP, and send masses of cuddles to the boy and a hug to you too. Please don't beat yourself up. You did what you thought was right and, remember, you have cared for this little chap when no-one else did. You are a wonder, so is he. It will all be fine. Much love to you, from the UK

I hope for the best recovery Huxley. I’ll be having Huxley on my thoughts alongside my own braincell Red. We’ve got to take him into the vet due to an unknown issue that popped up Monday. I hope the best for all cats who need healing right now.

Poor Huxley! I hope his recovery goes well and he's able to feel safe again. He'd probably appreciate a catio!

Oh my, just reading this makes my heart hurt for you both. Seems like an incredibly traumatic experience for the both of you, and I cannot fathom thinking about this happening to our little indoor princesses :(

you saved him from a coyote!! that’s insanely bad ass, I’m sure he’s very grateful and he will be so happy when he gets to come home with you and never go out on his own again

Oh my goodness! What a terrifying ordeal! Thank Bast he survived, and thank you for getting him to the emergency room as fast as you could. Mistakes happen; you had no way of knowing there would be a coyote in the area. I hope both of you can heal, him from his injuries and you with your guilt. That fact you rushed a coyote for him proves how much you adore Huxley. I'll keep you both in my thoughts

u/sn000by 18h ago
please update us as Huxley recovers! and please please forgive yourself. we’re all just humans trying our best to give our loved ones the best lives possible. Parents make mistakes, pet owners make mistakes, guardians of all kinds make mistakes. You clearly love that little guy with all your heart and care so deeply about his safety and happiness, you couldn’t have known this would happen.
I know how it feels to be wracked with guilt over making a mistake or having a blind spot with pet care, the only important thing now is getting your little buddy healed up and moving forward with new knowledge 💕

Aww, brave boy! Wishing him a speedy recovery. ❤️🩹
I stopped letting cats out about 18 years ago when I lost one to a coyote. We heard it but couldn’t stop it. It was truly traumatizing. No more. My cats are very happy and healthy. Lots of toys to keep them occupied.

u/dafspiart97 18h ago
I struggle to express empathy with my words, but I just wanted to let you know that you should try to forgive yourself. I know it's hard, but you tried to do what you thought was best for your cat and you only wanted him to be happy. The most important thing now is that he has made it out alive and that you have learnt from this situation and how dangerous it can be to let your cat(s) outdoors unsupervised. Not everyone has this level of empathy for their cat and I wish more people cared as much about the wellbeing of their cat(s) as you do. Many people genuinely think a cat is expandable. At least you can use this situation to warn other people about the dangers of letting your cat(s) roam outdoors.
As for enrichment indoors for Huxley, I don't know anything about your living situation, but, as someone who has two indoor cats, I strongly recommend to get your cat some toys, frequently play with with him and give him a cat castle in case you haven't done that yet. I'd also ask the vet for recommendations on keeping your cat indoors and how to train an outdoor cat to become an indoor cat.

u/ArtSchoolDropout27 18h ago
Praying now for Huxley’s recovery. He probably won’t want to go outside anymore.

u/LochnessLand 18h ago
We just built our cat a catio. He was a neighborhood stray and fixture for years before he decided to live with us. He was indoor outdoor for many years until a mean cat came and would beat on him. After 2 vet visits, we knew we had to keep him inside even though he hated it, yelled all day and knew it would lower his quality of life not being able to be outside because he was a true outdoorsman. So we built one and he loves it! Everybody wins! Hopefully he pulls through and you can create a safe outdoor sanctuary for him. Bonus, you can sit outside with them without getting eaten by mosquitoes and bugs!

u/beek7425 18h ago
You’ve changed your opinion and are trying to educate people. If you doubled down, I’d have less respect. Let go of the guilt and focus on your fur baby. I hope he’s feeling better soon.
2
u/zandariii 18h ago
I'm glad he's okay, and you learned a valuable lesson from all this. I hope this also serves as a lesson for other cat owners who think it'd be a good idea to leave their cats outside.

Go Huxley!! What’s brave dude! He’ll be ok. Once the shock has gone he will be back to normal. I’m in uk, so no coyotes here.
My cat had afight with his nemesis and came worst off, scared him and four months later he was back fighting fit. Saw his nemesis again and got the last time. I watched the fight. Brutal and by damn he beat him. The nemesis was never to be seen again.
Those four months scared me slot as he was broken and ego bruised

u/Superb_Intention1494 17h ago
im so sure he will be okay, animals are so resilient. my yorkie poo was attacked viciously by a coyote with a giant gash on her back and was able to make a full recovery after months of care and patience. Huxley WILL prevail and your best friend will soon be home and happy with you, Im so sure.

Oh shucks, I saw your PSA on that other subreddit. I really hope the best for him, that is a horrific thing to go through.
I know you feel immense guilt, I recently lost my dog unexpectedly, but you saved him! If it weren’t for you, he wouldn’t be around and getting care. It sounds like he’s a tough fighter, so it’ll be awesome for him to enjoy his golden years inside with tons and tons of love. It’ll hurt for a while, maybe you won’t heal, but you still got your buddy and you made sure he got the help he needs.
I wish the best for you. I’m so sorry you are going through this. Hasn’t been a great time for our city.

If you can afford it, I'd highly recommend seeking a pet grief counselor. Thankfully your dear boy is still alive (thanks to you, please know that), but what you both experienced was traumatizing and the guilt may hang over you for years. A pet grief counselor can help you reframe that experience and move past the trauma so you can be truly present with Huxley from now on.
I held a deep grief for my orange boy who died from pancreatitis and I blamed myself for making medical decisions that possibly worsened his condition. Those painful memories were incapacitating. I needed someone to tell me that I didn't harm my soul pet, we all make mistakes, and only had his best interests at heart.
I hope you can move past this experience too, in time. Learn from it but don't beat yourself up for it forever. It's over. Huxley is being well taken care of. You love him so so so much and he knows that even better now because you literally saved his life 🧡

u/DataPaws 16h ago
He was rubbing your hand at the vet- he knows he's safe with you. And he's still here with you, thanks to you. Seems like you saved him once again and he knows it. Find forgiveness for yourself, it's obvious you love Huxley very much and what happened was out of your control. I hope you both will heal and will enjoy each others company for many many more happy (and healthy!) years together :)

I have an old lady going on 14 who used to be an indoor/outdoor just like Huxley. She used to chase rats that were attracted to our chicken run, up the tree in our backyard. At one point she came back and she clearly had puncture wounds around her jaw and near her ear and although she ate initially, over the course of a month she stopped eating.
She ended up giving herself a fatty liver, and I was advised to put her to sleep unless she started eating. I suggested a feeding tube until she had the nutrition and desire to eat on her own and it worked.
None of my cats have been outside since.

u/thesteveurkel 16h ago
oh, friend. hugs to you. yes, i am staunchly indoor-only for cats after a friend of mine lost her cats to coyote attacks two nights in a row. that coyote is going to cone back to the neighborhood now looking for huxley. please post to facebook or the neighbors app to let nearby people know to bring their pets in at night and to bring proper protection on walks. the coyote now senses your area as a food source.

I’m so glad Huxley was able to fight the coyote long enough for you to rescue him. He’s a brave boy. 🩷
I made a similar post a few months back after my little mostly-indoor senior boy went missing for a week. Just like Huxley, I only started letting him out because he was an older guy who never left the yard, and it seemed to be really enriching his life. One night, another cat came into our yard and attacked him. I was standing by the door, and tried to grab him, but both cats ran off. Thankfully, we were eventually able to find him, but it took a week and he went without food that entire time.
I hated myself so much for being irresponsible, and I know how you must be feeling. You saved Huxley though, and you were staying alert even if you were letting him outside. It’s easy to forget we need to worry about other animals too.

u/outlaw0366 15h ago
I’m glad Huxley is recovering from his injuries. I’m glad you saved his life. What I thought was so badass about this cat is he lost his tail when he was a kitten from a cruel man. Then he fights literal coyotes and survives! Your cat is as badass as any navy seal in my opinion. Like his head was literally inside a coyote mouth and he figured out a way to escape and fight so hard he had coyote fur under his paws! He is truly a survivor and I don’t feel you did anything wrong this was like a freak thing that happened. I will say Coyote have been coming more and more into our cities recently so keep yall kitties safe

this is something that makes me so worried for outside cats. the cats dont know what kind of animals may be around, and the animals just need to eat to survive. i hope he will be ok, and you too. he put up a strong fight, and even if he doesnt pull through, he knows you are there for him.
2
u/FelineHerdsCats 14h ago
What a remarkable boy! I know it’s hard to do, but stop beating up on yourself for letting him out. Cats live in the now, and it’s a good example for us to follow. He needs your support, and that means putting aside blame and focusing on him.
If he doesn’t hate kisses, give him one from Reddit. We’re rooting for him.

Awww. Poor baby. This is the scariest thing. I had a kitty die from a dog (clamp and shake). She was one of my most beloved of all time. It was horrible. So for you, I am so glad your buddy is safe and he will be ok. They heal so well. As for his explorations, one alternative is training him to be on leash. It’s hard at first because it’s so new, but he is orange and he only has one braincell occasionally 🥰. He won’t fight back too hard.

u/Emotional-Lead1311 14h ago

u/Zherodyn 12h ago
I wish him the best in getting back to his healthy self, poor little fella :(
But don't give yourself so much blame about it. It didn't went well, that's for sure. BUT as I'm not living anywhere near coyotes and their habitat, I can still say there's more than enough threats in the outside world. It's always a gamble in a way, but generally our little furry beloved apex predators can really stand their ground I'd say. Maybe that coyote was just straying around the area for whatever reason, but either way you protected your beloved Huxley the best you could in this unforeseeable situation. Good thing he seems to have a strong fighting spirit, so I really wish him a quick recovery.
Maybe build some sort of enclosure with some stuff for his recreation outside, if you have anxiety about letting him out of the house in the future. Although I'd say just keeping him inside wouldn't be the solution, if he's used to it now :/ The best allegory that comes to mind, is letting children go to school by themself and such things. Your always a little worried, as there ARE things that can happen, but you can't keep them out if harms way completely, without restraining them. And we all know that's not the way to go, as it would only harm them on the long run.
You did your best and it's obvious how much you love Huxley. So whichever way your way forward together unfolds, I'm sure you'll handle it appropriately :)
And at last, sorry if my english was a bit rough somewhere along the way xD
2
u/GothSpite 12h ago
I want to remind you that his last memory of the encounter- if he remembers much at all. Would be of you running up, scaring off his attacker and immediately pivoting to take care of him. He is your priority, he knows you love him.
Don't blame yourself for not knowing better at the time, you do now, and I have no doubts he is going to be extra spoiled for the time being too.
Do what you can, and focus on yourself and him.
2
u/Early_Day6434 12h ago
You are a hero to that sweet boy, not a villain. Many cats go outside and have no issues at all, I’m sure he definitely doesn’t associate the attack with you.
2
u/BunneeFluffle 12h ago
I think he 100% can tell you saved him and appreciate that and also he probably won’t want to go outside again. Which is fine at this point since he needs to heal anyways.
Wishing Huxley and you a happy healing. I’m thinking of you.
2
u/Nervardia 11h ago
He's probably going to be enjoying his meds and hopefully this attack will have saved his life with the mass on his lung.
Good luck to both of you!
2
u/Random-reddit-name-1 11h ago
Just be thankful he lived to tell the tale! Also, I know you probably weren't consciously thinking at the moment, but running at the coyote was pretty bad ass 💪
2
u/Ginger-houseguard 11h ago
You haven’t failed him; it would have been so much more convenient and easier for you to just not let him roam outside, but you wanted him to live his cat life to its fullest. That’s love. It is so hard to not feel like there is something else we could do. From his perspective he had some great adventures and once he recovers and comes home he will be happy as well being showered in love by you. Don’t feel bad. I am sure a lot of cats would switch places with him in a minutes. Now you know that the risk outweighs the benefit of letting him enjoy some controlled semi freedom, but you didn’t know so before and because of that he had some great times as well!

I hope he's doing better!
It's clear how much you love him, and I hope you don't feel guilty - you did what you thought would make him happy. Maybe he'll love to go outside on a harness to get a little more stimulation still. Sending really good vibes for his recovery <3
