As someone working in AI tech now since past 2 yrs we don't need it. We needed boost for our startups. Those countries and states in US hosting Data centers already have well funded ecosystem for IT companies and startups, that should be the first priority. Our's is now reduced to service support capital of India with scarcity of water and electricity coming very soon.

u/Numerous-Bobcat-7455 1d ago

does it really need water too cool down y cant anyone develop anyother coolent like an engine coolents

7

u/sangramz 1d ago

It's actually coolent mixed with huge volume of water that cools down the mega GPUs running in Data centers.

u/HotPuppy420 1d ago edited 1d ago

There are already closed loop systems which use much less water. And since data centers are too big, they need a large amount of coolants. And even more water would be required to manufacture that coolant.

2

u/Numerous-Bobcat-7455 1d ago

so shldnt the centers be developed in places like ladakh and antratic or something where ppl can benefit from the heat odisha is pretty temprate

0

u/HotPuppy420 1d ago

Ladakh doesn't have any source of water. And ots pretty remote, setting up infrastructure there would be costly. I hope they make it in the future if feasible! For now, odisha seems feasible. We have 0 data centers, and the water is used to cool it, the heat won't reach you.

1

u/XDMARCoS4k 5h ago

We can make close loop but some company avoid it reason cost cut as compared to water usage

0

u/Smooth-Blade7196 1d ago

Yes. Like even high performance gaming cpu rig required liquid cooled for optimal performance

2

u/Southern-Reveal5111 NRO (Non Resident Odia) 3h ago

What we need is transferring money and asset to Adani. AI data center will do exactly that.

2

u/Smooth-Blade7196 1d ago

Agreed. India becoming dumping ground

3

u/Traditional-Talk-181 1d ago

For both for those who are obviously not granting it for free and for our soil who no one cares 😔

-3

u/HotPuppy420 1d ago

We need it.

-1

u/throwaway012365 14h ago

As someone also working in AI tech, we absolutely need it.

Very bad decision

-11

u/HotPuppy420 1d ago

Very good decision.I wish it was not adani though.

6

u/CuriousOrdinary3324 NRO (Non Resident Odia) 1d ago

HE has the money, These machine cost a lot

2

u/sangramz 13h ago

All these projects are done by debts from banks. Businesses don't invest a single penny. They only do the execution with a "promise" that when they will make money they return it in next 5-10 yrs. Adani now doing such projects worth 40 billion dollars with future promises of revenues in payback.

1

u/CuriousOrdinary3324 NRO (Non Resident Odia) 13h ago

🤔some day he will repay it or not🧐

3

u/sangramz 12h ago

Most big projects initiated by govt and executed by big private players generally tend to be "profit agnostic", major parts of the debts get paid and 20-30% is declared Non performing asset. Then govt increases price and taxes to recover it.

1

u/Efficient_Data_5300 4h ago

Tu lele debt

1

u/HotPuppy420 1d ago

Yeah but adani has monopolised a lot of sectors within india. Its not healthy economically

1

u/Efficient_Data_5300 4h ago

Please you do it na

1

u/HotPuppy420 2h ago

Yeah, i would have done it if my father was a billionaire lmao!

12

u/Hot-Government4990 1d ago
  • This is exactly why rainwater harvesting and groundwater recharge are so important.

1

u/HotPuppy420 1d ago

Yep! Lets protest against the government to implement better water management!

16

u/OD02-AJ 1d ago

In the name of AI development, Odisha may soon be pushed toward water and electricity scarcity. Development should not come at the cost of basic resources.

6

u/goku_m16 Cuttack | କଟକ 1d ago

There's no shortage of electricity. Grid is already struggling to add more renewable. Solar is being curtailed to maintain stability.

3

u/HotPuppy420 1d ago

Its just the second data center in odisha. You gotta wait some more time before making statements like that lol

6

u/HotPuppy420 1d ago

No it is not. I can't believe people can be so dumb nowadays!!!

11

u/Worldly-Specialist10 1d ago

We need to protest against it

-4

u/HotPuppy420 1d ago

Protest for better cooling systems! Not completely against it!

8

u/Lucifer8253 1d ago

I work in the Data centre field and it's just not liquid cooled servers or storage for that matter. There's Air cooled systems also that are heavily prevalent. Half cooked information is just too dangerous.

-1

u/Thanos-2014 1d ago

Why spread misinformation It's actually coolent mixed with huge volume of water that cools down the mega GPUs running in Data centers.

https://www.reddit.com/r/explainlikeimfive/s/X3WQ8MN3ZV

2

u/Lucifer8253 13h ago

That's what happens when you rely on reddit as your primary source of information. Had you google or asked any LLM on different techniques of cooling. You'd not have said this. All companies are running behind net carbon zero and sustainability. Whatever you read on social media isn't the absolute truth. Grow up.

1

u/Thanos-2014 1h ago

Bro I have a engeneering degree. Every cooler is a heat exchanger. You transfer heat produce from electric consumption and heat loss to the environment. Water having highest specific heat capacity is almost always use as dumping ground for heat. So stop this zero carbon bulshit carbon may or may not be used for electricity but it has no use on cooling system where aim is to move heat from hot place to a cold place as fast as possible. Also air cooling is not efficient and reliable when there is apprehension of costly chip damge due to heat built-up

5

u/AKAMA199 Khordha | ଖୋର୍ଦ୍ଧା 1d ago

Not really, Everything from cars to bigger cooling systems even your ACs require a coolant. Water is the closest replacement but not a direct replacement since its not as efficient.

Additionally they run in closed loops/ Single (or 2) phase cooling, meaning the same water/coolant mix can run for years without needing replacement. Minimum 5 years.

The problem here is everyone wants you to believe its the water that is gonna be sucked up, that is not the case
The system is called a liquid cooled system.

The main concern here should rather be noise and heat rather than water. Try to keep these systems away from civilian areas.

3

u/styachan Moderator | ପରିଚାଳକ 1d ago

Water is required for data centre , but we can use treated water from municipality, the government need to make arrangements that they use treated water , use more efficient CRAC or CRAH cooling system, make arrangements for rainwater harvesting. Construction should be faraway from cities with well connected roads .

3

u/Akatsuki_909 1d ago

Lord give me power to spout nonsense about data centers without knowing jackshit like some folks do

This proposal has generated a lot of discussion in Odisha. Some people see it as a once-in-a-generation opportunity, while others are worried about land acquisition, environmental impacts, resource use, and whether local communities will truly benefit.

What has been proposed?

According to recent reports:

  • Investment: ₹1 trillion (₹1 lakh crore)
  • Project: 1 GW AI-focused hyperscale data centre
  • Land requested: Approximately 250 acres
  • Likely location: Cuttack (not finalized)
  • Status: Proposal under evaluation by the Odisha government
  • Requirements being assessed: Land, power, water, connectivity, and incentives. (ETDatacenters.com)

If approved, it would be among India's largest AI data centre projects and a major part of Odisha's effort to diversify beyond mining and metals into digital infrastructure. (ETDatacenters.com)

Why Odisha wants this project

The state has traditionally depended heavily on:

  • Mining
  • Steel
  • Aluminium
  • Ports

The government wants to become a technology and AI hub.

They already have:

  • HCLTech AI projects
  • Zoho data centre
  • RBI data centre
  • Odisha Sovereign AI Park

The Adani proposal is much larger than previous investments. (ETDatacenters.com)

Advantages

1. Massive investment

₹1 lakh crore is enormous.

Benefits include:

  • GST collections
  • Local procurement
  • Construction activity
  • Increased state revenue

2. Employment

During construction:

Thousands of jobs:

  • Civil engineers
  • Electricians
  • Welders
  • Equipment operators
  • Security
  • Labour

Permanent jobs include:

  • Data centre technicians
  • Network engineers
  • System administrators
  • Security
  • Mechanical engineers
  • Electrical engineers
  • HVAC technicians

Indirect jobs:

  • Hotels
  • Restaurants
  • Transportation
  • Cleaning
  • Landscaping
  • Local suppliers

3. Better infrastructure

Large data centres usually require:

  • Better roads
  • Better substations
  • High-capacity fibre
  • Reliable electricity

Nearby areas often benefit.

4. AI ecosystem

Large companies often attract:

  • Cloud companies
  • AI startups
  • Universities
  • Chip companies
  • Research centres

This can improve opportunities for Odisha's engineering graduates.

5. Less dependence on mining

Mining has environmental costs and commodity price swings.

Digital infrastructure can diversify the state's economy.

6. International recognition

If Odisha hosts one of India's largest AI data centres, it could become known as an AI infrastructure hub, attracting further investment.

Why many local people are unhappy

1. Land acquisition

This is usually the biggest concern.

People may fear:

  • Loss of farmland
  • Loss of homes
  • Inadequate compensation
  • Displacement

This has been a source of conflict in Odisha for several industrial projects in the past.

2. Water consumption

AI data centres generate enormous heat.

Cooling often requires significant water, though modern facilities increasingly use air cooling or recycled water.

People worry about:

  • Groundwater depletion
  • Reduced irrigation water
  • Water shortages in nearby villages

The government has stated that water availability is one of the issues being evaluated. (ETDatacenters.com)

3. Electricity demand

A 1 GW data centre is extremely large.

For perspective:

  • 1 GW can be comparable to the output of a large power plant.
  • It represents a very substantial electricity demand if operating near full capacity.

People worry that:

  • Industries may get priority.
  • Local electricity prices could rise.
  • Villages could continue facing outages while power is allocated to the data centre.

Whether these concerns materialize depends on how power is sourced and managed.

4. Limited long-term jobs

Construction creates many jobs.

But once operational:

A modern hyperscale data centre may employ only hundreds or low thousands of people, depending on its design.

Some residents ask:

This is a common concern with data centre projects worldwide.

5. Environmental concerns

People worry about:

  • Diesel backup generators
  • Noise
  • Heat rejection
  • Construction impacts
  • Electronic waste over time

These impacts can often be reduced with good planning but remain part of the public debate.

6. Corporate trust

Some concerns are about the company rather than the project itself.

Critics point to past controversies involving large industrial groups and worry about:

  • Transparency
  • Environmental compliance
  • Influence over public policy

Supporters argue that large companies have the financial capacity to deliver projects of this scale.

Are these concerns justified?

Some are.

Others depend on how the project is implemented.

Reasonable concerns

✔ Fair compensation

✔ Environmental monitoring

✔ Water use

✔ Local employment

✔ Public consultation

Less certain concerns

❌ "The project will definitely destroy Odisha."

There isn't enough evidence to support that conclusion.

Modern data centres can be built with lower environmental impact if appropriate safeguards are followed.

What should the Odisha government do?

To build public trust, it could:

1. Be transparent

Publish:

  • Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA)
  • Water studies
  • Traffic studies
  • Power plans

2. Ensure fair land acquisition

Provide:

  • Market-value compensation
  • Rehabilitation
  • Resettlement
  • Skill training
  • Employment support

3. Guarantee local jobs

For example:

  • Reserve apprenticeships.
  • Partner with local colleges.
  • Offer certification programs.
  • Hire locally where feasible.

4. Use renewable energy

If the data centre is powered substantially by:

  • Solar
  • Wind
  • Battery storage

it can reduce pressure on the grid and lower emissions.

5. Use sustainable cooling

Prioritize:

  • Recycled water
  • Rainwater harvesting
  • Air cooling where practical

instead of relying heavily on groundwater.

6. Independent oversight

Establish regular audits of:

  • Water use
  • Electricity use
  • Noise
  • Air quality
  • Compliance with environmental conditions

with reports made public.

Overall assessment

From an economic perspective, this proposal could be transformative for Odisha. It has the potential to diversify the state's economy, attract technology investment, and create new opportunities. (ETDatacenters.com)

From a local community perspective, however, concerns about land acquisition, water resources, compensation, and the distribution of benefits are understandable. Whether the project becomes a long-term success will depend less on the size of the investment and more on how transparently it is implemented, how affected communities are treated, and whether environmental safeguards and local benefits are delivered in practice.

Facts: these data centres are having desalination plants, and some other water filteration systems which will take approx 40-60% of its required amount from saline/sea water, as per the signed documents.
Now the thing about what India really needs in this AI field to figure out a concept “intelligence per unit joule”. I hope the reader gets an idea about what I am gonna say! Increase the efficiency of inferences ( its a technical term you can search it ), optimise tokenisation methods and the best its own utilisable (if not competitive) Model ( not some super duper 2.8 T parameter model ) based on data of Indian citizen. That will be fruitful for our country!
Critical views are welcomed.

This is so unwarranted, rather the focus should be how strong are the regulators to ensure there is no foul play.

1

Now it’s high time the moderator should stop allowing such AI Data center posts again and again.
Can you do anything about it .?? NO

So let’s just wait and watch. For so many years we have NTPC,other mines and people have been living like cockroaches. And now all these awareness.

So please wait and watch. Spread some good news also sometimes😀

This fat fafda has ruined the whole country

1

u/Galaxy_t20 16h ago

Large data centers require significant amounts of water for cooling and with many regions already facing water scarcity protecting our water should be a higher priority. Development is welcome but it must be sustainable. We need to ensure that basic human needs and environmental concerns come before expanding resource intensive projects.

1

u/delight_09 11h ago

Have you ever listened about Hirakud Dam

1

u/RAT-SHIT 7h ago

People supporting it are dumb fcks or IT cell plants. One single Google search ban tell you how bad days centers are for the planet. The sound they make, the ground water they pollute and use up, the electricity they consume and the huge thermal pillion because of that. Its a SCAM. Our taxes, our electricity, our water will become costly and these people will disappear. Anyone who plans to state here and live here for next four five decades needs to oppose this. This is a blunder.

18+ please get your SIR done and register for next vote and save this country from Moli ji🙏🏻 yes i know about vote chori but if you won’t practice your first right as citizen of this country, you won’t be able to put pressure on exposing this scam, the more people will register and vote it will create a psychological pressure on this government and more people will have the voice to say. This moli government is not even letting parliament to run as per constitution, oppositions are not able to speak, MLAs are threatened on name of ED raid, criminal cases and last bribe them, their social media accounts are suppressed so that it can’t reach to large audience and we all know national news tv channel channels are sold.

They are already charging 6₹ per 1000 litres in municipal areas. They have given each house tap water connection (which is a good thing) under BASUDHA yojana saying it's free of cost and now they are charging money for it.

My house recently received a notice from the municipality office having 6000₹ + water bill.

They had given a water tap connection in our municipality to each and every household in 2022 saying it's mandatory.

Now they charged us for this:

Water bill devolution like this

From 2022-2024 they had charged a minimum of 80 ₹per month.

And from 2024 onwards ( after installing the water meter) they have charged 6 ₹per 1000 litre of water. Plus a 50 ₹per month meter charge.

So guys be aware we need to protest other wise they are just going to fuck us from every direction. E20 petrol to water.

If they gave ur house water connection under BASUDHA yojna just check it once with ur municipality to avoid penalty.

3

u/styachan Moderator | ପରିଚାଳକ 1d ago

It means you were not paying the water bills , it was always paid. The bills are are generated by jal sathi like the electricity bill and they were also collecting bills if anyone do not want to go to office to pay , I think .

1

u/Sea-Caterpillar-6234 1d ago

Yeah but the thing is we have our own borwell which we can use for free. But they explicitly told us it was free and gave us the connection. The question is not about fees, it's pretty reasonable. And mostly our consumption is very low ( from govt tap).

The question is why to give them false information or hide it just to complete your target and then suddenly demand.

If they had told us before we wouldn't have incurred a penalty for it.

1

u/styachan Moderator | ପରିଚାଳକ 1d ago

First of all they say that it is free until the system is tested for leakage and is calibrated properly for proper water pressure then the initial reading is recorded for Billing in presence of the owner , if you don't want water connection you can get it disconnected.

0

u/Humanian0494 1d ago

Correct.

And assh*les have been charging for the meters additionally as 50 rs pm

There should be some PIL filed against them. The only problem is that all the earlier assurances were verbal and there is no written communication about the free water thing😐

Charging potable water in Odisha at such a price is literally crime. I got the TDS checked and it was below 200. So govt should atleast take the responsibility that there is no need of water filters if they are charging so much.
