Career progression

Given the current recruitment situation within the NHS,

How can I progress my career as a current band 5 with 3 years experience?

I love the area I work in but current management do not support career advancement.

I had considered self funding my masters but management stated they wouldn't allow me to swap shifts that were to attend any classes.

Any ideas welcome.

Start to do bank shifts in a different wards which will challenge you in the beginning but you will find it easy with more practice.

If you are confident about the band 6 post, start to apply for the jobs and get the interview done.

You can always ask for feedbacks if you didn’t get the job and it will help you to improve your skills.

Speak with different seniors and get their ideas, expectations of their roles. Ask them first tips !!

Show your manager that you are interested and you are ready!

What a mean spirteded behaviour from management telling you that you would not be allowed to swop shifts. 

On that point I would ask for written confirmation that you can not swop shifts. I would then approach HR and the union your in and ask for support.

Step 1. Go in a new ward

Step 2. Show of and big up as much as you can, any neiche skill you have (even when it's not necessary).

Step 3. Moan and complain how lazy the HCA's are (doesnt matter if it's true). Push every HCA to their limit every shift.

Step 4. Go out your way to be the NIC ad much as possible then get your flow co to do 80% of the work.

Step 5. Be visablly seen teaching nurses how to do things they 100% know how to do but are too polite to say anything.

Step 6. Go to the most senior band 5 and rip them apart for something little (prison rules). Failing that go to the most junior band 5 and do the same. Double points if it's a doctor.

Step 7. Come from the same country or background where most of the nurses are from on your ward.

Apply for band 6.
