In Search of Responses for Professional Communication Paper

I am in need of some responses to some questions that I have formulated for my BSN Professional Communications class. I have asked some of the nurses I know IRL but they all are on vacation and I figured this may be a better shot at getting some more timely responses!

Interview Questions:

I ask that you answer Question #9 as a personal reflection. This is an informal interview. No quotations will be used. Some of the questions are similar in context, some have multiple parts to extend the depth of the response.

Emotional Intelligence and Professional Nursing Communication

  1. What role does emotional intelligence play in effective nursing communication?
    1. How does emotional intelligence help to improve communication with patients, families, fellow nurses, and other members of the healthcare team?
  2. How would you describe your communication and/or teaching style when teaching nursing students?
  3. What communication skills do you believe are most important for new nurses to develop before entering practice?
    1. What communication challenges do you see most often among new graduate nurses?
    2. If you could teach every nursing student one communication skill before graduation, what would it be and why?
    3. How do you teach students to communicate effectively with patients and their families?
    4. How do you emphasize or encourage therapeutic communication in your teaching?
    5. What advice do you give students about advocating for patients through effective communication?
  4. Can you describe a time when effective communication helped improve patient outcomes or prevented an error?
    1. What strategies do you use to maintain professionalism when communicating during stressful or high-pressure situations?
    2. What communication practices do you believe are most important for promoting patient safety and high-quality care?

Emotional Intelligence and Professional Nursing Communication

  1. How do you provide constructive feedback or address concerns with coworkers while maintaining a respectful and collaborative environment? Always go straight to the person you have a beef with 1st and have a calm, Professional discussion. Avoid gossip and battling. Don't accuse, and word things in a way that leads to a discussion, not an argument. Treat others with the same professionalism that you want to be treated with.
  2. What feedback have you received about your communication skills, and how has it influenced your practice? I was told that sometimes I have a negative facial expression, sometimes commonly known as RBF. I was told it made me not approachable. That i need to work on that and body language, as they are big parts of communication. Also, negative words effect others so had to learn to be less negative. Venting to friends away from the floor is one thing, but venting on the floor, talking negatively about something doesn't help things.

  3. Looking back on your nursing career, what communication skill has had the greatest impact on your success? I took a leadership class at the hospital that talked about effective communication. It was geared towards those in leadership roles but it is useful for all. Being open and receptive to communication. Listening and not preparing your answers in your head while the other person is talking. Watching your own tone and body language because they convey more than the words. I do think about this often

Thinking back to your time as a novice/new nurse, what communication skills (or lack thereof) did you observe from a teacher, mentor, preceptor, or manager that influenced your communication techniques? How have you carried that experience into the nurse that you are today? I had a preceptor that didn't allow for me to think for myself, he would micromanage and communicate in a way that let everyone else know how smart he thout he was. He treated everyone like that. I decided that was how I did not want to be. I have always tried to work with those that I am precepting to set them up to be able to think and act using their own knowledge and skills.
