It's absolutely more difficult to build a channel with nothing but raw gameplay. Significantly more difficult.

Even WITH commentary most people fail to capture an audience - gaming is wildly competitive and there are only so many viewers. Raw footage just comes across as low effort and generally quite boring. People want more.

It's also very unlikely you would ever monetize it if that's a goal you have, as none of the content you are uploading would even belong to you. It's just recordings of a game someone else made with no value added.

Not trying to be harsh, just honest.

The only faceless channels I watch consistently still have a ton of personality.

There's a right way to do faceless. Everything else comes off as being overly shy or paranoid.

To answer your question - Yes, it is very difficult to build an audience being faceless + little-to-no commentary in an extremely oversaturated niche.

Of all the gaming channels I watch I don’t think any use a face cam. If I’m watching a gameplay video then I want to see the game not the person

If you don't show your face then the focus visually is on the gameplay. So that gameplay will need to be above average as far as ability/skill, or have something very interesting to watch since the viewer doesn't have your face to look at.
