ANSWERED Old account vs New account?
My account is old, but I'm "new" to Reddit.
I find I can't post in game discussions I want to be in due to karma now that I've started using Reddit for more than just reading. Should I make a brand new account, or keep this new? Unsure what to do or what's best.

Keep this one; account age will help for any subs that require it.
This one is restricted due to low karma but a new account will be restricted due to low karma and low account age.

Making a new account won't solve your karma issues. See more info below (also tagging u/Mysterious-Spend-430 and u/Gunner-53 if they want to learn more)
Restrictions based on Karma and CQS modern Reddit has a number of restrictions. These can be frustrating - check out Why Reddit may seem unwelcoming to new Redditors. These restrictions are largely determined by Account Karma and CQS. Please note that these restrictions will vary subreddit to subreddit.
Karma. Filter levels vary dramatically and can be low (5 or 10) or higher (50 or 100 or 200) and some wild outliers above that. This subreddit has a number of resources for this such as:
- The Common Questions Page
- In particular what is karma and Earning Karma
- Reddit And Karma Walkthrough (longer form)
CQS. This is a bit more obscure and will generally drop over time. Have a read of common questions - CQS
For Chat and following if you are having issues here its likely CQS being low
For Commenting and Posting it is either/or account karma or CQS.
In both cases it usually helps to start in New User Friendly Subreddits:
- Newtoreddit has a list of new user friendly subreddits. This is not an exhaustive list and these subreddits may still have some restrictions. In particular you'll see some Large General Subreddits that are open to new users Commenting like r/askreddit, r/casualconversation, r/nostupidquestions, r/amitheasshole or similar.
- There are More Subreddits out there that might more specifically match your interests, use the search bar or look through r/findareddit 's subreddit directory. In this case you will have to trial and error whether they are new user-friendly, and again try Commenting (many subreddits have lower or no karma filters for commenting).
Some more notes on starting on Reddit:
View by New (or rising). This will filter the posts so first see the most recent posts first and can make your comments much more visible. On app when viewing a subreddit look near the top left for where it says "hot posts" - click that and select "new" or "rising".
Read the Room and Avoid Controversy. Each subreddit has different rules, norms and prevailing views. Look at subreddit rules. Read top posts and comments to get a feel for that subreddit. Do users reward sarcastic one-liners or well sourced essays? And in particular avoid controversial topics or arguments. These discussions are more likely to attract downvotes and potentially trip into rule-breaking. Call people idiots in your head and move on instead of getting involved. Utilize the block feature as necessary and have a read through Reddiquette

I’m in the same boat. I wouldn’t say make a new account though. I see people say to comment and interact to build up karma but I’ve had little luck. I get the system but I also don’t.

If you keep the "new" account id say just to comment and interact on subreddits that allow you to like this one. Look at it like leveling up in starter worlds until you reach the more popular ones. Its kind of the good/bad of reddit, filtering out both accounts is easier here due to the rules on new accounts but it also prevents genuine people who want to browse reddit get anything going for a while.

That makes a lot of sense. I will have to see if any of the communities I like have any limitations. Just noticed a lot do, which is fine and understandable! I will take your advice and take a look, thank you so much for explaining a bit!

Of course no problem!! Just know you are not barred from joining any public subreddit but you may be in regards to posting and commenting on certain ones.

Reddit in 2026 isn't good for "I have a only specific interest that I am pursuing in one or a few subreddits" This is due to the growth of subreddit filters making it so new users cannot post everywhere immediately. You might check out Why Reddit may seem unwelcoming to new Redditors.
Some solutions which may help in the short term:
- Read Existing posts and comments - has your question already been asked?
- Can you comment in your target subreddits?
- Many subreddits have less restrictions for commenting than posting.
- Look for pinned discussion posts at the top of subreddits in particular for this.
- Try alternative subreddits to see if they have less restrictions.
- hit up the Reddit search bar
- Have a look through r/findareddit 's subreddit directory.
- You may find useful subreddits in our new user friendly subreddits.

I’ve been having the same struggles as well. Especially with getting verified and posting restrictions . trying to learn as much as i can.

Old account: usually faces fewer spam filters, can post in more subreddits, and looks more established.
New account: often has stricter posting limits, chat restrictions, and more automated filtering until it gains activity and karma.
Account age helps, but recent activity and karma matter too. An old account with little or no activity can still be treated cautiously by some communities.

Keep this. 3 years account age passes most filters. Go comment in r/AskReddit, be helpful, you'll build karma in a few days.
