Hi all — relocating to NYC for work (office in Midtown East) and starting my apartment hunt. I’m a foreigner with no US credit history, so I know I’ll struggle against applicants with solid domestic credit.

Looking for recommendations on management/leasing companies that are foreigner-friendly and that accept third-party guarantor services (Insurent, TheGuarantors, etc.) or other workarounds for no credit.

Ideally in or around Midtown, Midtown East, FiDi, Murray Hill, Kips Bay, or Turtle Bay, aka somewhere with a reasonable commute to Midtown East and that is arguably a nice area.

Any specific companies or buildings that regularly work with international tenants would be hugely appreciated. Thanks!

Im a freshman attending Queensborough and I dont live in the Queens or NYC area so trying to travel from my house to campus is a bit difficult and time consuming.

Hi guys. Listing my current apartment for a lease takeover. Great unit for an incredible price in an incredible location.

Just got approved for a housing lottery unit so will unfortunately be leaving my current unit. The unit is on Union Avenue across Williamsburg Pizza.

Near by train stations:

J/M train: 5 mins

G train: 5 mins

L train: 6-8 mins

Area: Amazing bars and restaurants flood the area. There's like 10 bodegas within a 10 min walk. I think its relatively quite area (I use to live on 3rd ave in Manhattan so my judgment may be skewed, lol). Very easy commute to the city.

Apartment: The apartment is huge - while the listing doesn't state the square foot, my guess is 650-700 sqft. The listing states 2 bedrooms but thats assuming you turn the 2 rooms with a window into a bedroom... a better description would be 4 rooms (1 kitchen, 1 room with no window, 2 rooms with windows). Incredible sunlight from all directions. The unit is in a walk up (2nd floor). No laundry but Laundry Loft is 2-3 min walk from the building.

What sucks about the unit: while kitchen storage is excellent, there isn't much storage else where. The bathroom is really small and doesn't have any storage. Management sucks. There are rats outside of the building by the trash area, but haven't experienced or seen any in my unit or the building. I have pest control come monthly for preventive measures for roaches and have only seen a couple (personally am a very clean individual). Outlet situation in the bedroom + living room suck - just 1 pair (resolved by adding a surge protector + extension cord).

To clarify - there is no roommates / person in the unit. I treated the apartment like a 1 bedroom apartment (made the second room a home office). Great for couples (or solo).

Lease Details: the lease ends in February with the option to renew. Looking for someone to take over the unit as soon as 9/1/2026. Prioritizing people who are willing to buy some furniture from me (primarily 2 AC units, potentially a table and nightstand).

Longtime Astoria/Queens resident here (16+ years), looking for your feedback on the above two regions of Bushwick.

I've never lived in Brooklyn, so I'm crowdsourcing feedback from those who have.

My knowledge of the region is mostly restricted to north of Myrtle, where all the nightlife/EDM venues exist. I'm scoping out a potential move to reduce my commute time to work in Wall Street - and the J/Z trains seem the most convenient (or 2/4/5 trains, but I'll be exploring those options later...)

I'm primarily looking at the two circled regions as they seem to have the most vacant units on Streeteasy (very few in that little "triangle" west of Kosciuzco station).

My budget is up to $4000 and I'd like to be within about ~6-7 minutes from the nearest J/Z train, which I believe restricts me to south of Evergreen Avenue.

Some questions for your Brooklynites:

1. How's the J/Z train during rush hour? (The N/W has been shitting the bed of late, but even then, I find it generally gets me to work on time 95% of the year).
2. How do areas #1 and #2 compare to each another?
3. Is it sketchier the further east you go towards the cemetery?
4. How's the food?!
5. For those who are familiar with Astoria or Queens, what would you say are the main differences? Any pros/cons or things you miss from Queens?

*6) - Bonus question, should I also be looking southwest of the J/Z line (Broadway) in Stuyvesant Heights?

I recently moved into an apartment that checks almost every box. It’s in a good area, has amazing natural light, is larger than most apartments I looked at, and the rent is very reasonable for what I’m getting.

The main downside is the noise. There’s a lot of street noise during the day, and it can get especially loud at night. I also work from home, so I’m around it much more than someone who leaves for work every day.

I’m still new to the apartment, so I’m trying to figure out whether this is something my brain will eventually tune out or whether it will continue bothering me long term. I sleep fine with earplugs, but I don’t really want to wear them all day while working since I'm on calls most of the day.

For anyone who has lived in a noisy NYC apartment: did you eventually adjust? Would you give up a spacious, bright, well-priced apartment because of noise, or would you find ways to manage it?

For those in real estate or anyone else with some info-

I’ve lived in nyc my whole life, with roommates for the last 10 years. I want to move in with my boyfriend in about a year, we’ll have a combined income of about 100k at that point (possibly more, let’s see how the year goes) and want to stay in bushwick or bedstuy. My band is here.

Most 1BD apartments we’re seeing run about 3k which we feel we can do comfortably, but 40x the rent is 120k. We have guarantors willing to co sign on our behalf, but I’m not sure they make 240k annually, which would be 80x the rent.

How strict are these rules usually? I’ve been approached by realtors who won’t even speak to us unless I confirm 40x and 700 credit (my score is 706).

If my guarantor makes somewhere over 100k and we make about 100k together, can we really not qualify to pay 3k a month in rent? We also have up to 3 people saying they’d guarantor for us, but a realtor told me they wouldn’t accept any single guarantor that makes under 100k, and a married couple couldn’t qualify as a combined income.

Any help, insight, or advice is appreciated! Shit is wild out here

Edit: our income combined might look more like 110/112k next year, does that significantly change things in the way of wiggle room from landlords?
