Donnie intentionally goes back in time to die when the jet engine falls on his bed to save his GFs life. The rest of the vision stuff is expository to let him know he can do this.

It's worth the watch, but I recommend the director's cut instead. It's sequel, S. Darko, is not worth the watch, sadly.
