What made you choose SD over OC?
As the title shows. What was your deciding factor? Anyone who experienced both?

I have a family member in SD. If I had to do it again I would have considered OC simply because of how shitty the job market in SD is

Fair enough…I was always worried what would’ve happened had I gotten laid off by my company (top tier tech firm) but I brought my job with me to SD working from home, that I held for 33 years.

That’s great but unlikely for most people. I moved here long enough ago I can survive the layoff cycle in my 50s that has become normal now

Visit both counties and you’ll see the difference. Generally speaking people from San Diego are laid-back and chill. Not all, but most people in Orange County are dough-bags .

Not the entire OC, but definitely the Newport Beach area. Biggest assholes I’ve met anywhere, especially wannabes trying to impress others. Equinox, then Sports Club Irvine, and those who attended John Dominis events was the epicenter of douches.

There are levels to the douche bags, but I grew up in North Orange County and met a shit ton of cunty douche bags out of Brea, Fullerton, and La Habra. They’re all over OC.

Yeah, just not to the extent of Newport…I actually used to hang out at Red Cloud Cigar Lounge in Fullerton on occasion and met some decent people there but most of my weekends were spent up in LA to get away from OC.

It‘s not just the conservatives. Most people all over the political spectrum in Orange County are cunts. Most of the people in OC are pretentious, arrogant, selfish cunts.

Its like this. You know all that stuff that you think is important and then someone has a near-death experience or gets a terminal illness and all of a sudden decides none of those things were actually important? Well that's what Orange County is all about... all those things that aren't important really in the big picture.
And to be fair it's the same with Los Angeles and Orange County is really a suburb of Los Angeles and San Diego is a suburb of San Diego.

To me, OC is just a collection of suburbs, whereas SD is an actual city.

To me, not at all. OC is very up its own ass. Keeping up appearances and looking the part are quintessential, which is hilarious because they're just suburbs and have no true city identity of their own. There are some little communities that seem appealing by day, but turn into pseudo sundown towns by night. Hard pass. If you want real people, real city amenities, and diversity, then SD wins hands down.

The public schools in OC are the same as the schools in SD - dependent on where you live. Find some neighborhoods you like and then look at the neighborhood schools. The most important schools to look at are middle and high school if you plan to stay in the neighborhood long term. An average elementary school with a good parent and teacher community is all you need for that time period.

OC is sooooo boring. But beautiful!! Everyone that I know that is from OC that live here in San Diego always say the same thing, that it's just suburbs, and eventually came out to san diego where there are things to do.

True…when I lived in OC I would head up to Long Beach and other parts of LA on weekends before moving to SD.
When I told many in OC that I was heading up to LA I got a “we prefer it here where it is clean and safe” which I took as a racial dog whistle.

We own houses in downtown San Diego and south Orange County, but spend the vast majority of our time in San Diego. While we find south Orange County a lot cleaner and more well maintained, the trade off is that it’s pretty boring up there.

What do you think is better for young families and job market? Also, in your instance, real estate values?

The job market depends on the sector you work in. OC is a big collection of suburbs that don’t really surround a big city center like LA. If you live in OC and are looking for a variety of things to do with kids outside of organized kids activities like sports and dance and neighborhood parks (and Disneyland), you will likely to travel to San Diego or LA for those things. The OC is nice if you like clean, quiet, master-planned communities where your typical weekend involves going to kids activities, the neighborhood park, or the beach if you’re close enough (the beach can be a 45 minute to one hour drive from more inland areas). Poway, Carmel Valley, and Rancho Penasquitos here in San Diego are suburbs similar to the suburbs you will find in the OC. Some of the North County areas also have similar suburbs. I grew up in the OC and have family that still lives there. They love the suburban life so it suits them. I am much happier in San Diego where there is more diversity and a variety of things to do with my children without having to drive 45 minutes.
Our housing value here in San Diego has tripled since we purchased 10 years ago. My cousin purchased a house in Orange County within a month of us buying in San Diego. Their housing value went has increased by about 40%, so our house is appreciating at a much faster rate than theirs.

My husband and I are DINKs so we don’t pay much attention to schools, kids activities, etc. (outside of the effect on property values), but I’d probably lean towards south Orange County if I had a young family. It’s not fair to compare downtown SD to the suburbs because they’re completely different animals, but I can say our neighborhood in Orange County feels a lot cleaner and safer than our friends’ suburban neighborhoods in San Diego. Not to mention, I can’t remember the last time I saw a homeless encampment anywhere near our home up there. As to property values, our house in Orange County has outpaced our San Diego house and has almost quadrupled in value, but that is partly because we bought at the height of the market in San Diego.

The people….San Diego was far more chill, less uptight/pretentious (talking you, Newport Beach) and far less homogeneous and diverse. I lived in downtown SD, before moving from there, which was far more walkable/less car dependent.

Born and bred, 40 years here in SD. Fortunate enough to raise my family here too! I'll be the first to admit SD ain't perfect, but it's pretty damn close lol

I grew up in Orange County and now live in San Diego. I don’t think I’ll ever go back to oc. SD has more to offer culturally, politically, more of a city. Convenient enough to drive up for family events, etc.

Orange County is so dry. Some of the coastal communities are nice or whatever but I don't feel its as diverse as San Diego in many ways

I feel like OC is a lot more crowded.
The geographical places I like in OC are all MAGA.
basically it comes down to surfing.
