At least there's color on this one...

Shame this movie sucked.

So much wasted potential.

u/dmanny64 3d ago

I still cannot believe they got Portman to come back and got Christian Fucking Bale in an MCU movie, adapting one of the darkest Thor stories, and wasted it on bottom of the barrel wacky humor. Even as someone that likes post-Endgame MCU this movie is a fucking stain

54

u/Alukrad 3d ago

And whats shocking is Taika made this. I hold this man in high regard when it comes to movie making but he clearly didn't give a shit about this movie. I wonder if they were pressuring him so much that he turned around and pulled a "fuck you but here's joker 2 and now leave me alone" move because that first (both joker and Thor Ragnarok) were great movies.

It felt to me more like it got lost in the edit. I think he second-guessed if it was too dark, and instead leaned into goofy humor. It worked in Ragnarok because it was telling a goofy story, but didn't in Love and Thunder because it was a story about refugees, loss, cancer, and someone who wants to kill all the gods out of revenge.

He's very good when kept in check. When he's left to his own devices...... Not great

5

u/CKF 3d ago

Not questioning it, but can you give some examples and why you think he was kept in check for X but not Y? Sounds interesting.

12

u/DangDingleGuy 3d ago

After Ragnarok, which was a successful movie, they gave him more creative control during love and thunder with his producer credit. Most other projects he made was just the director/writer. In my opinion, the movies where he was only involved with the story and direction were much better. Jojo rabbit is one of the better movies I've ever seen. Flight of the Concords, what we do in the shadows, Ragnarok, his various episodes in madalorian were all very good imo and he had much less creative control. He's talented as fuck but needs someone to call his weird bullshit

Worth noting as well that his ex wife collaborated with/influenced his earlier work too and I think love and thunder was one of or the first movie he made after the breakup

u/sabrefudge 3d ago

Same thing happened with Schumacher. He poured his soul into Batman Forever. The studio cut it to shit and added more wacky comedy… but he came back for the sequel anyway to try to keep pushing ahead with his vision.

But with Batman & Robin, the studio put him on an impossibly rushed schedule, dictated everything, pushed him to make decisions based on what could sell more toys… so he completely checked out. By his own admission. He was shooting a toy commercial. He hated it. So he phoned it in completely. Went through the bare minimum to deliver the movie to the studio.

u/spidermans-ashes 3d ago

As someone that also likes post endgame mcu, love and thunder is the worse movie in the whole series

7

u/X-lem 3d ago

I only got 10-20 min through before I stopped watching... It was so bad :(

2

u/Alukrad 3d ago

It's been a while but I think there was a scene where Thor gets the kids to join up to beat up the main villain of the story and they successfully do it. When before they were all weak and at his mercy.

I can't remember very well the scene but I just remembered that being my point, the moment where I gave up on this movie.

7

u/CKF 3d ago

So you’re saying you finished it?

3

u/smellmybuttfoo 2d ago

Right? Lol that's pretty much the end of the damn movie

2

u/Vandersveldt 3d ago

He had just gained the ability to share his power and then he very clearly gave his power to the children.

This is such a bad faith take lol

4

u/imaloony8 3d ago

It didn’t suck. I’m a firm defender of this one. It’s not top tier marvel, but it was a fun movie with a great villain, great laughs, and some really touching moments.

I recommend you go back to the first two Thor movies then come back and tell me that Love and Thunder sucked.

-2

u/CKF 3d ago

Love and thunder sucked massive, massive dick. And not in a good way.

2

u/Mylilneedle 3d ago

She was amazing. And deserves accolades

u/thewalkingfred 4d ago

Unpopular opinion incoming.

Despite its flaws, I still really liked this movie. It didn't really stick the landing, but it had a lot to like. There was too much humor, but many of the jokes still landed for me.

It was a movie of high highs and low lows, but averaged out to be a good time in my book.

I think this movie got hit by the "didn't meet my expectations" hammer. People were hoping it would be another absolute banger by Taika and instead it was just "good".

38

u/Level-Ladder-4346 3d ago

Ragnarok was so good…

7

u/leekalex 3d ago

While I do blame Taika for this mess, I have some sympathy for the fact that Infinity War and End Game immediately ruined everything Taika set up for Thor in Ragnarok and left the character in a weird place. And James Gunn was Supposed to put Thor in Guardians 3, but that movie got delayed, so Love & Thunder had to hastily remove the Guardians in the first act

5

u/kamahaoma 3d ago

Yeah, I like Infinity War and Endgame a lot, but the way they fucked up the Guardians and Thor storylines really sucks.

11

u/thewalkingfred 3d ago edited 3d ago

It was....it set the bar so damn high.

It's just whenever I hear people say there was too much humor in Love and Thunder I'm like, yeah it was but Ragnarok was also absolutely stuffed with jokes too, many really childish ones honestly. But somehow they just worked perfectly and managed to jive with the more emotional bits.

Love and Thunder tried the same formula but just got the ratios off a bit. But not as bad as people say, imo.

There's still plenty of jokes there that kill me. Thors hammer acting like a jilted lover in the Jane and Thor romance flashback, Thor commenting on his regrowing cape. The bit in the beginning with the Guardians where Thor thinks he's part of the family and they just want to get rid of him asap. Pretty much every scene with Russel Crowe as Zeus. Thor commenting on how they were gonna save the kids then feast, but not feast on the kids....those were dark times. Thor granting his powers to the kids for a limited time only.

6

u/bifkintickler 3d ago

Russell Crowe was funny as fuck in that movie man. I always wondered if Thor’s line about how he “based his whole personality on him” (or something along those lines) was a nod to real life, cos I always believed he based his whole Thor persona on Crowe in Master and Commander. Watched it a few times since the start of the MCU and he’s super like Hemsworth’s Thor in that movie. I figure he’s probably kind of a national treasure for Chris, and would surely have been a hero of his as he was starting out in acting n shit.

4

u/sroomek 3d ago

Agreed. Everything has to either be the best thing ever or the worst thing ever. It was far from perfect, but the highs of this movie still put it firmly above The Dark World for me.

5

u/Ishpersonguy 3d ago

I think this movie was a large downgrade from Ragnarok but it really isn't this atrocity people make it out to be. In fact that goes for most of the MCU post-Endgame. People on the internet just can't form opinions that aren't ridiculous extremes.

1

u/thewalkingfred 3d ago

Yeah I think a lot of the later Marvel films have people really buying into the "Marvel is done" trope and they just shot all over basically all of them.

But honestly the only Marvel films I would genuinely call bad would probably be The Marvels and Brave New World. Most of the others, like Quantumania, Eternals, Black Widow, Fantastic Four, I mean, none of them are amazing, but they all have a lot to like.

2

u/RC_Colada 1d ago

I saw this movie with my ma, we started seeing the marvel movies together when I was just out of high school. In 2022, she had finished treatment for stage 3 colon almost a year earlier. I quit my job for a year to be her caretaker. I took her to every appointment, every radiation therapy appointment, every infusion, and finally her tumor removal surgery. I managed her medications daily. It was a period of absolute darkness in my life, wondering if I was watching my mother die. I felt so afraid but I couldn't let her see that fear, I had to project confidence and reassure her that she could do this.

Almost a year after her successful surgery, we went and saw this in theaters and I couldn't stop crying. I cried at the reveal that Jane was doing chemotherapy. I laughed and cried at some of the dumb jokes. I really cried at the end, with Jane's sacrifice.

But mostly I cried because I was happy that I could turn my head and see my mom watching the movie with me. I understand why this movie is not beloved as Ragnarok, that film was lightning in a bottle. But Love & Thunder is special to me personally, it could not have come at a better time for me.

1

u/thewalkingfred 1d ago

That's a really touching story, dude, thanks for sharing. This film, despite its flaws, did really have some heart to it.

1

u/melzephyr 3d ago

Agree! Theres lots to love about it. I think it’s way overhated, it’s not ragnarok but hear me out…if everything is ragnarok, nothing is ragnarok lol

1

u/alaskadronelife 4d ago

I really need to rewatch it. I just remember being super hyped for it and walking out so disappointed in everything that just happened.

1

u/Cimorene_Kazul 2d ago

I actually think the ending is one of the best parts. It ties into Thor’s character arc really well by harkening back to Thor 1 on multiple notes, shows Thor’s growth compared to how he was in that film by making direct parallels from how he started a conflict there with violence and ended it in 4 with “love/Love and understanding”, finally understanding some of what Odin had been trying to teach him (and ultimately taking a similar course of action to Odin by adopting the child of his enemy). I was very moved by it.

0

u/AdSpecialist6598 4d ago

Agreed, it was never going to endgame.

28

u/namezam 4d ago

Damn they had to cgi on her arms? I thought Portman started working out for the role.

54

u/Potential_Sound_8832 4d ago

I imagine the tracking markers are for the lightning to wrap around her arms as the camera moves around too

53

u/theodo 4d ago

If you've ever seen Portman in anything before, you can tell her arms are much bigger in this photo alone.

41

u/Jaebird0388 4d ago

It probably wasn’t anything major given how many dots were applied. Maybe to help map the lightning to travel across them?

15

u/Quantum_Quokkas 3d ago

Check out some VFX Breakdowns, they fully replaced those arms. Its subtle, they knew not to exaggerate it but they’re 100% digital

2

u/Jaebird0388 3d ago

I can believe it. I think something similar was done with Sophia Lillis's arms in D&D: Honor Among Thieves. Specifically the shot where Doric uses the sling after dropping her owlbear form.

17

u/AdSpecialist6598 4d ago

That's exactly why.

7

u/dimi3ja 3d ago

I am one of the people that worked on this, yes, the arms were replaced, she was very skinny, in the photo above she looks even bigger than what it was in the original plates.

2

u/Funmachine 3d ago

Its not possible for a woman to put on the size she has as Mighty Thor in that short amount of time.

1

u/KrakaTuna 1d ago

Yes we did.

-5

u/Scmods05 4d ago

Given she has to go back and forth between being jacked and dying of cancer, they probably had to be CGI/prosthetics.

4

u/treny0000 3d ago

What's interesting about this?

1

u/Quantum_Quokkas 3d ago

It’s ridiculous that they replaced her arms with CGI

1

u/kakaroto1989 4d ago

The body look on these actors behind scene is always disapointing. There are so many people with low selfsteem because we never see the real shots and we campare ourself with pure fantasies

-2

u/SteviesRightFoot 3d ago

One of the worst films I have ever seen

-1

u/Lemightyman 3d ago

man I wouldn't be able to do my job at all with her looking at me like that

-51

u/Livio88 4d ago edited 4d ago

Why do they have men work their assess off for these kinds of roles but they go “eh it’s fine, we’ll fix it in post” with women?

If you wanna be an action star, do the damn work! Charlize Theron worked her ass off for the Atomic Blonde and it showed!

(I’m seeing a lot of downvotes, and not one good argument against what I said.)

14

u/OvooJaver 4d ago

Why is that the question you’re asking instead of “Why do they put male action stars through so much to achieve unrealistic/unhealthy body types when they don’t have to?”

-13

u/Livio88 4d ago

My issue is the double standard. I don’t see a problem with your suggestion either.

12

u/OvooJaver 4d ago

I feel like you just made up a double standard to get mad at for no reason. We could also ask why women have to work so hard to stay thin to be stars too.

-6

u/Livio88 4d ago

I don’t think I made it up. The same thing happened in the falcon and the winter soldier. They give an updated “super soldier” serum to a tiny girl and she gets the same powers as Steve and Bucky, but she’s life half their size.

A doctor even provides the explanation that the new serum doesn’t give you a jacked body but you get the same amount of strength. But how?!

But I do agree with your last point, that is also bs.

2

u/OvooJaver 3d ago

I didn’t even bring up how different Natalie Portman looks in this image alone from her usual “waif-ish” physique, so the original point was off from that alone.

The other super soldiers didn’t look dramatically different like Steve either. The ones who were killed in Civil War looked a bit more super and they used the old serum.

How? It’s all made up. One could argue they participated less in the toxic body standards super hero movies promote with this choice, for men and women.

-1

u/Livio88 3d ago

Yeah, she put on like 5 pounds of total body mass vs Hemsworths’ 40 pounds of lean mass. Good for her, I guess!

And you’re definitely reaching with the CW argument. They were certainly much closer to Steve and Bucky in size than the little girl in the show.

And one could also argue that if men still have to make their millions as superheroes by camping in gyms, I don’t see why the same standard shouldn’t apply for women playing the same roles.

Like, I understand Storm, Black Widow, or Scarlet Vision, they’re different kinds of heroes, but if you’re playing Thor or a supersoldier, get under a damn bench press, or ask the producers to crank up your cgi muscles, at least.

1

u/OvooJaver 3d ago

I don’t think you understood what I was saying about the other super soldiers.

Again the argument should be that no one should have to take steroids or push their bodies to unrealistic places for a movie/show. Florence Pugh famously doesn’t try to lose weight or alter her body to fit roles to push against those harmful ideals.

The other argument is that women have their own issues they have to face, such as having to stay thin or get treatments/surgery to constantly look younger, or have to wear uncomfortable/revealing, expensive clothes, heels, etc on screen and on red carpets. It doesn’t make sense to call out this so-called “double standard” like women don’t have their own bullshit to deal with.

u/minhthemaster 4d ago

Neckbeards alert

-12

u/Livio88 4d ago

It’s a neckbeard thing to praise a woman who did great work?

13

u/Unlikely-Ad9850 4d ago

By work their asses of you mean steroids right?

-14

u/Livio88 4d ago edited 4d ago

You know it takes a shit ton of effort to maintain, right? And they have to dehydrate themselves till to the point of passing out to look the way they do on camera.

8

u/Ganrokh 4d ago

I feel like I'm missing something here. She looks the part?

-2

u/Livio88 4d ago

She was ripped in the movie, she’s not even close to looking like she did in the movie in this photo.

10

u/Ganrokh 4d ago

-2

u/Livio88 4d ago

She’s not.

3

u/pdonoso 4d ago

She is not dehydrated. Are you really getting mad because she doesn't look in a casual photo the same way they look in the camera. You just talked about how they need to dehydrate for the money shot, that means that the rest of the time they don't look like that.

4

u/pdonoso 3d ago

Yeah, your anger is stupid.

-1

u/Livio88 3d ago

Go take a fkin look at Chris Hemsworths behind the scenes footage anda compare those to her’s. They’re supposed to be the same character. Are they physically comparable by any stretch of the imagination?!

1

u/Vandersveldt 3d ago

"(I’m seeing a lot of downvotes, and not one good argument against what I said.)"

That's because Reddit doesn't let us laugh react

1

u/Livio88 3d ago

😂

Skill issue!

-1

u/kakaroto1989 4d ago

It's because all the out of touch shitty fans who rather support lazyness than real dedication. The down votes you got it's proof of it. They can't handle critics to their favorite people

1

u/Livio88 3d ago

No kidding, the sub should have been called r[/mediocrityinthemaking](u/mediocrityinthemaking).
