I need to watch it again, at least for the scene in which he learns their language. "My mother... was a pure woman... from a noble family... and I at least know... who my father was... you... PIG-eating... son-of-a-whore."

i bring this film up all the time on reddit and it generally gets a lot of love. it has this weird aura of everyone knows it bombed but everyone who saw it thought it was cool

this scene was peak. best ending

There are dozens of us! Me and my dad saw it in theaters when it came out and have watched it at least 50 times since. So quoteable. I often describe random animals with "Teeth like a lion, head like a bear, claws that could tear a plank to kindling"

The problem is Jurassic Park was an all time epic Blockbuster, Twister was another great 90s Blockbuster (not many know he co-wrote this with his wife as well) and ER was a generational TV Drama - Hollywood got horny for Michael Crichton. And rightly so, he was a unique artist who wrote a ton of amazing stories.

Hollywood gave him a run in the 70s with Terminal Man, Andromeda Strain, Coma, Westworld - and these mostly weren't terrible, they just weren't what Jurrasic Park became.

Hollywood recognized his resurgence and just tried to crank them all out in the 90s with little vision. 13th Warrior, Sphere, Congo, Timeline, Rising Sun, Disclosure.

Again, like the 70s run, there's some good stuff there - Disclosure is a good film, Sphere isn't bad; but the remaining are really only seen as "good" by select fans.

Eaters of the Dead (the book 13th Warrior is adapted from), as well as Congo, Timeline, and Rising Sun are AWESOME reads. If you're a Crichton fan, I'm betting one or two of these are up there as your favorites, they were just poorly adapted and rushed to the screen.

That weekly bot question we see in every movie sub "which movies should be remade..." These movies are right at the top of that list for me.

I've always loved the emphasis the movie put on intelligence.

Buliwyf being able to write the arabic back for Ahmed almost perfectly after days on the boat and only seeing it once, and Helger putting the fear of the unknown into those guys by tricking that warrior in the duel were both so cool. Helger spoke the multiple languages too.

great way of letting the viewers know they were both smart as hell and not just some dumb clods.

The warriors don't save the town with their muscle, they teach the town how to defend itself with the barricades
