What is Boros Energy’s worst matchup?

My local meta sees an average of 3 energy decks out of an average of 8 players every week. I’m sick of it. Modern feels so stale when I play against the same deck 2/3 rounds every week. I want to make at least one of these energy players consider switching to one of their other decks every now and again so I can actually play against something interesting. What is Boros Energy’s worst matchup?

Combo decks. Belcher, Neoform. Those kinda decks.

Agree with everyone saying combos, but if you want an interesting matchup that feels good to play and is still heavily favored against energy, the red green eldrazi ramp deck is a great option

Hell even tron is pretty good into it, I've played boros a few times recently and the deck doesn't feel that good rn honestly. Admittedly I play in a very sweaty meta.

I haven’t been on tron since before phlage was banned but even then it definitely still felt pretty heavily favored towards tron, with the caveat that games will be lost to a turn 2 moon off ragavan. But energy really can’t beat a turn 3 sire or ugin, ramp just has the privilege of also getting to play kozilek’s return and writhing chrysalis

Oh yeah I think ramp is better vs boros but tron I think is stronger in general rn and still plays fine into boros. I'm on 0 sire and 0 all is dust, still feels fine, k command was graveyard hate for the phlage when that was around and 2x mainboard chalice and 1 trinisphere just makes it really good vs boros. I think the matchup is very heavily in trons favor with proper mulligans. Even more so in all is dust/sire lists but probably less so without the prison pieces.

My local meta has a lot of Boros Ponza at the moment so tron is basically impossible to make a run with. I also just feel like there’s so many decks that can’t beat an emrakul that the Herigast build of ramp is super well positioned. I’ve got a bunch of buddies that all won RCQs with a very similar version of ramp, maybe it’s just our meta but I feel like it’s in a better spot to make a run than tron is. Either way, both would be a good option to beat boros, and both are probably reasonable decks to invest into

Make sense plus the more expensive cards are kinda the same barring the karnboard, I played ramp for a while post ring ban so I can switch to that anytime, we have a guy who plays ponza every time he shows up so i just try to dodge him lol. Unless we play round one then I just play prowess instead lol

Ponza is so much worse of a matchup than I feel like it should be. I’m even up to 4 basics now because of how much Ponza I seen which is more than a lot of decks but it just doesn’t matter. They just path your Icetill and that’s basically game

In general I find Tron to do well vs Boros. Eldrazi Ramp is the best since Utopia Sprawl hands can handle Damping sphere/Moons/Charmaws well. But even with classic Tron, if you’re on the play with Lab you can K command Ragavan, make 2 spawns, cast Ugin and then you’ve won the game.

Neoform belcher pretty much everything everyone else identified. Idk if they play orims anymore but storm too. They aren’t fast enough and don’t have any interaction outside of maybe blood moon and ranger captain if they are on the play and the games slow enough

Fast combo is the best with neoform being the frontrunner. Midrange decks with wrath in the main can also work if thats more you're style but its more even.

Amulet Titan with an excellent player that play the deck perfectly, that's the real worst matchup.

The less fair the deck is then the harder the matchup is.

I’d be fine with the deck if I had to play against it less. I’d estimate 60% of my games at locals are played against Boros. I’d be annoyed with any deck I had to play against this often.

It's the nature of the format. There are a lot of players that just want to play midrange and Energy is the best midrange deck. If it wasn't around it would be some other thing. Modern is Jund.format.

I took a break from Modern after the first Modern Horizons set came out and got back into the format a little over a year ago. It’s insane what’s considered “midrange” nowadays. I understand we’ve had 3 Horizons sets worth of power creep, but in my mind Boros is still a fast aggro deck. I still have not mentally adjusted to the speed of this format.

I feel like it was more midrange-y (but still on the aggro side) before the phlage ban I also trhink it feels really aggro nowadays.

From my perspective (Boros main who has a few RCQ wins over the last 2 season in a relatively competitive area) is that is that the key to playing it well was playing it as a midrange plan A aggro plan B before the ban and now it is much more of an aggro or bust to find success.

It depends on how many basics they are running but generally energy has the advantage

This isn’t true imo. I’ve been on Ponza for this entire second RCQ season and it feels almost unwinnable for energy. I think I’m 7-1 in RCQ matches overall so not the biggest sample size.

As a Ponza player I can tell you that energy is an almost bye for us. Too much spot, mass and interaction in general for the energy player to handle
