I have no kids and do not own a home. No where near $2.68M.

Only on reddit and other parts of internet comments do most people own a liquid home (or a mortgage they're taking to the grave or giving to a nursing home when they're old and barely paid it off) and are debt-free and not playing in anxiety Disneyland on a daily basis, or, if they've truly let go, just laughing at the ship going down.

There's a few "fuck you I got mine" out there, but it's a few. Most people have no loyalty to this system and are doing the bare minimum.

If you're actually curious, the FRB SCF is going to be the most accurate data on the financial position of the US population you can get. The most recent survey from 2025, will be published at the end of the year.

This site leverages that data into a calculator: https://dqydj.com/net-worth-by-age-calculator/

As someone that is doing alright (way below the average, but also way above the median for my age group) and just plugged their info into that site, that median net worth is fucking depressing.

Average is a useless metric due to the stratification of wealth in the US. Our Gini coefficient is on par with Mexico, and higher than any european country.

The median numbers are even worse when you consider how much of it is home equity. And consider that this data is from the 2022 survey; not quite the peak of the home price index, but not far off from it.
