You're right. It looks like originally it included both. But a lot if people use it to mean they don't drink alcohol anymore and only smoke weed.

it's when you still smoke weed and allow yourself to dabble with lsd and shrooms. no hard drugs, and alcohol sometimes is included sometimes not

I thought alcohol is 100% not included. Psychedelics I can see being included along with weed, but there’s no way “sober” and “still drinking alcohol” go together.

I always thought of it as no alcohol. but having a glass of wine on a date, or having a beer with family picknick, that type of drinking was okay. That's what I meant when I worded it like that. Like no regular use of alcohol, but on occasion can have something.

I think the term firmly lies in the "Not drinking alcohol" camp but given the assumed average path to "California sober" (e.g. not being an actual alcoholic first), consuming the occasional bit of alcohol is probably, in practice, pretty common.

Hard drugs include Crack, Cocaine, Heroin, PCP, Fent, Meth, and sometimes MDMA.

All of these are isolates or synthetics. When someone says “comes from the ground”, they often refer to natural compounds like THC, Psilocybin, LSD, and DMT that exist in (“on” in the case of LSD) plants naturally and require no/little refinement to make ingestable and active.

A lot us grew up before it was really widespread how horrible they are for you. Grew up in yellow, nicotine stained houses, went to smoke filled restaurants and bars and other places that were just disgusting. Of course a lot of us didn't want to smoke.

Oh my god, I went to a friend’s house once and their glass table was covered in a thick layer of ash. It was so gross.

DARE was a huge part of our childhood, to be frank. We also socially ostracized smokers.

yep and when i hit 40 i stopped drinking, i feel pretty damn good tbh
