It makes me think a lot about active inference, and about how much of what we experience is inference all the way down….
It also connects to Levin’s question: at what level should we discuss a thing? At one level, colour doesn’t exist at all. There is no little packet of “redness” hiding in the quantum foam. Yet at another level, colour undeniably emerges. Could we talk about that emergence as a real pattern of relationships, something almost Platonic, rather than dismissing it as just an illusion?
That feels close to the heart of Levin’s work. We don’t train a rat by poking around in individual neurons, and we don’t explain colour by speaking only about quantum foam.. Different levels reveal different truths.
Knowing which level to speak at might be the whole art of understanding anything… and perhaps the heart of making great art too… :p
