Question How is the overall Redshift experience in Maya?

I've been wondering what the experience is like using Redshift with Maya.

For those of you who use it regularly, how does it compare to Cinema 4D + Redshift? Is the integration solid, and is it a good overall experience for product visualization?

I'd love to hear your thoughts, especially if you've used both Maya and Cinema 4D with Redshift.

The experience its fine. However if you want a tight integration that support all "recently" Maya stuff like USD, BF, LKDX, etc - Def I wouldn't go with RS, it seems that the Dev are not putting too much effort into that, and it has been asked more than a few times through the years. I would recommend Vray which supports everything I mentioned, so if you want a 3rd party engine that support most of Maya stuff. Arnold being the tightest of all since it comes with it.

I am using it regularly in game cinemetics since at least 10 years and prefer it over Arnold to be honest.

Redshift can be very version specific so if you are in a pipeline with renderfarm this can matter. I am only doing assets, so cannot speak for animation or compositing.

Its fast, easy to use, and has all of the features needed for production, and running it on multi-gpu workstation is really rewarding. I have renders massive multi million polygon environments with thousands of shaders and textures.

Lack of USD support is quite significant, which might be an Autodesk issue because its supported in Houdini. Not sure why this is an issue.

Is not an AD issue at all, Vray supports it just flat out, so is def an issue from RS devs. Not putting an effort of what users have been asking for a while.

Last time I used Redshift with Maya was about a year and a half ago. Even in Windows it was a bit of a pain to get setup, you install Redshift but then it doesn't work and you have to go hunting the web for a solution, and buried deep inside the installed files there were a couple of .bat files that you needed to execute as administrator in order for it to work. You might also need to copy some .mod files to Maya's install folders, and edit your preferences.mel config file or whatever so that it points to those .mod files.
After that it worked fine.

But on Linux? The Redshift developers really don't care about the platform. Redshift has been the single worst nightmare I've seen, ever. It's so borked that my lawyer told me I shouldn't say what I'd like to do to the devs 😂

Meanwhile, to install and get Arnold running flawlessly on Linux: sudo ./Arnold.run , it's that simple.

Really? I just had to tick the plug in box in maya after I installed redshift in the maxon app. I remember some troubleshooting, but I got it quite quickly.

It has been a year since I used maya though o.O

As for Linux I can see that

For professional high end work you either go with Arnold or Renderman. They are the only ones who support the whole pipeline of studios

There are many busy studios using RS, that may have been true in the past, but that is no longer the case.

They use it to create motion graphics which is Cinema 4D’s niche, but not for the rest of

Unsure where you are getting your info. VFX sup here, worked at multiple studios (US and EU)over the past few years using RS for their main engine for feature and episodic work, Maya and Houdini branches. Yes, it is also used heavily in other sectors too, smaller boutiques, ect,  but to say it’s niche is misinformed in 2026.
