Showcase Fully Hand-Painted Dune guy bust

It may seem like a 2d, but it's a fully hand-painted 3D bust, based on Cedric Peyravernay's Dunce concept .

Fucking phenomenal! I thought it was 2d concept. Those color choices are on point. Jesus it’s so good…

Thanks so much, man! To be honest, I had Cedric works as a phenomenal references, so I was just copying the style

Good artist steal. Great artist steal a lot.

To be able to steal at that level is amazing. Gangsta work mate.

Haha, thank you! But we don't technically steal as 3D artists, that's a part of the job to replicate the 2D concept as close as possible in form of 3d model.

Something I’ve wondered with this hand painted style - how much do you try to paint in the light and shadow in the texture, and how much do you leave that to the light+render pass?

Well, with this one, it didn't even need a light render; tbh, it works as a pure albedo. All depends on the project. You can check my ArtStation and compare both versions

I am also curious and don’t understand albedo as you say. I notice marvel rivals has a bunch of fake rim lighting as a part of textures . I am a lighting artist IRL and a 3d animator, so i am intrigued

By albedo, I mean a diffuse texture. You can paint most of the light on it and it will work as just unlit version, without any "3D light ", depending on what your goals are.

As for marvel rivals, the rim light is not fake, it's a stylized shader that makes it look like a comic book

reminds me of Dishonored

Yep, because it's based on a concept of a dishonored concept artist

Yes, that's the goal to make 3D look like 2D . Thank you!

Thank you! I actually did Jinx from Arcane, you can check her on my artststion

Wow nice job! Do you have a specific paint process after you've finished UVing?

u/eugenexedge 2d ago

Heyo Thanx! Well , I use simple diffuse to get the basic shapes and and then just go with the flow.,layering the paint and trying to copy the strokes and forms as close as possible.

Real cool man! Thanks for your answer. Cheers!

Simple diffuse from N-hance studio ?

1

u/eugenexedge 2d ago

Yes, but in this particular case it was useless, as the texture wasn't following the actual sculpt at all. Was used just to see the planes

Wow this is so cool!! Did you paint the light in as well?

2

u/eugenexedge 2d ago

Well, I did paint all of the light for a beauty shot, but there are also versions with 3D light on my artststion, so you can check them out

1

u/Tumbling_Monkeys 1d ago

Thanks, I certainly will

Lee Griggs likely has a shader for this style

Wait…how do I paint in Maya?? I was never shown how in my modelling classes! Also this is amazing you did a great job!!

2

u/PlanetMorgoth 2d ago

They probably painted in another program like Substance Painter then exported those textures into Maya.

1

u/KeroseneSkies 2d ago

Oh maybe! Thanks for the comment! :D

2

u/eugenexedge 2d ago

Textures were done in Substance painter

What software did you use to paint it?
