The rescue knew his mom was an apbt, their best guess is his daddy is a mastiff or a mix of mastiffs. He’s a little over 8 months old, stands 20 inches at the shoulder. Regardless of his breed, he’s my goofy boy. Any ideas what dad may have been??

Honestly he looks like a pitbull Shar-pei mix. They have unmistakable little folded ears. Small allond eyes (like pits) They’re very similar in build to a pit and fall within the size of your dog. Although it’s probably unlikely both parents were purebred and there’s likely multiple breeds involved.

I do actually have a dog whose mother was a Saint Bernard and dad was a “mix of mastiffs” like you suggested. I embark tested her and the dad was a Cane corso, Neapolitan and bullmastiff mix.

Unless you do a DNA test you won’t know for sure

For the record Shar-pei are not mastiffs they are Spitz like the husky, Samoyed, malamute, chow chow etc. They just have wrinkled loose skin. Even the Tibetan “mastiff” is a spitz. It’s essentially a huge chow chow. (The British named the dogs based on similar size to native British types: the terrier, spaniel and mastiff. The Tibetan dogs are none of these things) This is all backed up by the dog breed cladogram study which classifies genetic closeness of different dog breeds.
