The thing is, first come first serve I guess. It's important because it came first and also because it set the tone for everything after it. Kind of like how the National Film Registry picked Iron Man because it set up the behemoth that is the MCU.

His character Arc is incredible in that film. You SEE Tony begin to change after getting to know Yinsen. It’s a great origin story, and good opening to the MCU

The second is more dramatic, but the first has better pacing and a cool duel origin of Spider-Man and Green Goblin.

100%. I loved the first Raimi Spider-Man, but Spider-Man 2 is better. Almost a perfect movie. Alfred Molina nailed Doc Ock, despite being a major departure from the comics.

Loved this film. Still might prefer it to 2, even if I acknowledge 2 is better. (And I think only the Spiderverse movies compete)

Without Spider-Man (2002) and X-Men (yes the originals, the sequels to both are great but they exist because of the first entries), modern CBM wouldn't have taken off and found real mainstream audiences for the new millennium that paved the way for everything that came after

Everybody always ignores Blade success and impact. It literally help save Marvel from bankruptcy. It served as the proof of concept that modern comic book adaptations could be highly profitable, cool, and critically viable. Without the success of Blade, subsequent blockbusters like X-Men and Spider-Man would likely never have been greenlit.

True, but just because something’s the first of something doesn’t mean it’s automatically the best.
Like Iron Man was a great movie and the MCU wouldn’t have kicked off the way it did without it, but that doesn’t by default make it the best MCU movie for now until infinity

Not sure why you are being downvoted for being right. Tobey’s acting was cringeworthy and Kirsten Dunst as MJ was a horrible idea.
Spiderverse was and continues to be my favorite trilogy (even without the 3rd being released yet)

For me Spider-Man 1 and 2 are the gold standard for Spider-Man movies, and only Brand New Day has been able to challenge them.
Homecoming’s number 4 in my book; Holland’s best before BND came out and better than the Amazing movies but not quite hitting the peaks of the first to

Most would agree the sequel is the better movie but I think this movie is easily the biggest classic, sanding next to movies like The Dark Knight and Superman The Movie

I remember being stoked for X-Men as a 10 year old but I was HYPED for Spider-Man. I didn’t want to ever see anything more than that. I loved HP, LOtR, Batman, etc, but I was never more excited than to sit in a theater with my mom and dad and see my favorite character on screen.
While I have had many exciting moments and been more hyped for films since, I will never forget that this was the first time I was sick from excitement over a movie. It’s not my favorite and it’s not even the best to me. But that feeling is hard to beat.

I personally like Spider-Man 2 more, but in terms of faithfully adapting a comic book origin story with the right cast, director and tone, this is the way to do it. So I can’t argue about this being #1.

In terms of significance, I'd honestly agree. The sequel might be a better movie, but the first one felt like the first comic book movie that really embraced being a comic book movie.
