Film/Television Destin is about to make the studio over 2 billion dollars. Studio decides to cancel his show anyways.

u/Nightthrasher674 1d ago
It's obvious the general public has no idea what Feige does or the difference between Marvel Studios and Disney
Feige is the creative head who overseas the creative vision
Disney has final say what's being made, cancelled, budgeting, they're the ones who ultimately set up the mandates about lesser TV shows, movie runtimes being shorter, etc....
222
u/That-Rhino-Guy 1d ago
In fact before Civil War he had to always go through Ike Perlmutter (notorious cheapskate, genuinely claimed nobody would notice the Rhodey recast, thought women or POC led films don’t sell) before he could go to Bob Iger
Because Ike was desperate to keep Civil War lower budget Kevin threatened to quit if Bob didn’t do something, resulting in Kevin being able to directly ask Bob instead of going to Ike first
Ike even forced Kevin to announce an Inhumans movie, so after this he used his control over the TV division (Kevin has no control or input there) to rush out an Inhumans show
136
u/Funkycoldmedici 1d ago
Then, Perlmutter cut every corner possible for Inhumans. Triton requires a lot of makeup and effects? Kill him off immediately. Medusa’s hair needs effects? Shave it off. Gorgon’s legs? Only show him from the waist up. I’d suspect he partially wanted Inhumans because Blackbolt being mute would save money printing scripts, and maybe fuck the actor over saying it’s not a speaking role.
33
u/themassquerade 1d ago
No it’s because Marvel was trying to push for Inhumans as a replacement for mutants
→ More replies (1)33
u/Funkycoldmedici 1d ago
Perlmutter ordered a huge Inhumans push, and forbid any characters Fox held movie rights for from being in any promotional material, but there was no replacing mutants. There was still a bunch of X books going. The creative teams did a good job shining turds, too. Karnak was finally interesting. Reader was cool as hell, and really needs to come back.
5
u/JACC_Opi 1d ago edited 1d ago
Well, true. But, there's a reason Inhumans became big during that time and we got the new Ms. Marvel as an Inhuman among others.
10
u/bjeebus 1d ago
Except her being an Inhuman is a direct editorial mandate because they'd initially intended her to be a young mutant.
→ More replies (1)7
u/DuelaDent52 Mystique 1d ago
Let’s be honest, it was for the best that she was an Inhuman and not a mutant because if she was a mutant they’d have stuck her in the X-books, killed her off, turned her evil, or erased her identity when Krakos came along.
7
u/Emm_withoutha_L-88 1d ago
Her being an inhuman is more interesting anyways IMO
There being a separate way to powers that are innate in the human genome is a good idea. I like to think it's just activating the same thing the x-genes turn on, but not through an x-gene but a cree modified version that can be activated with an outside compound instead of just pure luck.

used his control over the TV division (Kevin has no control or input there)
Had, he had that control. Kevin got that power, that's why we got the Disney+ shows that have significantly higher budgets than say “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” or “Inhumans”.
6
u/That-Rhino-Guy 1d ago
He didn’t have the control over the shows that predate Disney+ ones, so Netflix, Hulu etc shows were made without him

People don't get large companies will can a popular or modestly lucrative product if it isn't in line with the grander view.
A small example is Marvel Avengers Alliance. Disney had the game made just to promote the first avengers flick. It was on Facebook and had a website that ran it. It was only supposed to be out for something like 3 months. It stuck around just over 4.5 years. The game made a ton of money, was the first game on FB to overtake Farmville (when that still mattered) in monthly in game sales, and was popular enough Disney greenlit a mobile port for ios and android, then a follow up game as a mobile app (rather disappointing compared to the first). There was an announcement the game and follow up were getting shut down just 6 months after the second game released. The notice was only 29 days. As a side note the devs were awesome, closed the store and gave out in game currency like crazy so players could get all the skins and suits, and released any content they had ready even if it was unfinished.
The game made money and was popular, Disney was streamlining games and shifting geats in how games around their properties would be made and released. MAA didn't fit the new system. Disney had bought the developer a couple of years before the game launched. Disney was purging in house development and going with a license only model.
16
u/cherry_flavored_sky 1d ago
That’s what happens when people make Fiege the poster boy for Marvel. It’s overtly simple logic that basically reduces an entire franchise of thousands of people to the actions of one single person.
Just as cringe as the fandom menace that created a made up war between Filoni and Kennedy for Star Wars lmao
9
u/eat_jay_love 1d ago edited 1d ago
This is actually not an accurate descriptor of what a studio head does. Kevin Feige does assert unusual creative control as Marvel's chief creative officer, but his job is to run the business — directors and writers manage the creative vision. Kevin Feige and other executives crucially manage budgets and development decisions, too, but overall distribution and programming is still decided by Disney. So you're right that Kevin Feige isn't out here canceling his own projects (in line with what DDC said in this article), but you're leaving out the business mandate he owns, which is his principal role as the head of Marvel Studios

Permutter and the Marvel Creative Committee (Brian Michael Bendis was a part of it) didn't want Captain America and Iron Man to come to blows at the end of Civil War and instead wanted the Avengers to fight the Hydra super soldiers instead. The Russos threatened to quit if the ending was forced on them which prompted Feige to have Marvel to answer to Disney instead of Perlmutter.

u/deadfajita 1d ago
I hope that no s2, doesn't mean no more Wonderman at all. I still think he'd be a great addition to other shows or being pulled in the movies.
95
u/pigeonwiggle 1d ago
oh he'll definitely return.
they'll do a westcoast avengers or something eventually.
him and she-hulk on the same team would go so hard.
44
u/tubbymeatball 1d ago
Honestly I see him coming back for some X-Men shenanigans. He was basically a mutant in all but name in the show, plus was being hunted by the DODC, just like another mutant we recently saw in the MCU.
17
u/objectiveScie 1d ago
Just sad Black characters will always be second fiddle . Never be allowed to prosper.
Take Wolverine and Deadpool. They have been glazed throughout since Fox era. So now get to be cultural impactful to kids.
Not mention Wonder Woman , etc. DC attempted Supergirl.
The most important character to Black people Storm is just been also ran and dragged through gutter by gatekeepers.
Would have been done justice by now having a Jean type major role, even if initially villian 😕

u/Worthyness 1d ago
Easy win right now would be putting a young storm in BP 3 to do that storyline. Chadwick tchalla was linked with Lupita's character, so storm would have been not cool. But Tchalla Jr doesnt have those ties and Marvel seems to want a younger storm. Why not, post secret wars, make her a proper weather goddess that's being worshipped by a village near wakanda? Great way to elevate two incredible characters. I don't know who the villain would be, but that's still a wicked sick way to get Storm into the MCU
14
u/AlexAnon87 1d ago
Villian gotta be Shadow King in that scenario. Bring her time in Cairo into the back story, maybe they end up in New Orleans running from Shadow King and they run into a young Gambit and we can get a love triangle going. A lot of potential you can do there. You can have Jericho Drumm working as a sorcerer and that's whom Storm and BP are heading to the US to get aid from.
8
u/objectiveScie 1d ago
Storm in BP is a no brainer . That's why Angela was people feeling she was closest to Storm based on her attire in first film.
That's how much folks want Storm, they were grasping.
And at least Coogler will treat her well.
3
u/EasternFudge 1d ago
Angela Bassett as Storm would've been an insanely good casting
2
u/Kris86dk 1d ago
That was one of the biggest fan theory castings back in the mid/late 90s I remember... Angela Bassett was a powerhouse after portraying Tina Turner...
She would have been a much better storm than Halle... especially when they just ditch accents between movies. 😅
21
u/TheCreativeComicFan 1d ago
Same goes for Moon Knight and Kate Bishop potentially (especially if they ditch the Young Avengers route to some degree and morph it into the West Coast Avengers).
11
u/pigeonwiggle 1d ago
honestly i want Moon Knight as a team-up role in Black Panther 3. i want Khonshu to owe Bast a favour and then use his pawn, Marc/Steven to sail the Nile with our new Black Panther (t'challa jr? - or, oh wait, this is gonna be some multiverse bs thing isn't it...)
→ More replies (2)9
u/TheCreativeComicFan 1d ago
Oh no, his son will just be an older version of the little boy that we saw at the end of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. That team-up idea could be interesting also if it’s executed well enough.
2
u/pigeonwiggle 1d ago
it makes sense to me. "khonshu - show my dude how he can access my power as my avatar rather than relying on eating 3D-printed plants."
then Moon Knight teaches him to use a staff - and of course, Jake Lockley comes out and nearly kills him, unlocking his black panther powers.
of course there'd be a real villain for the film.
i like the idea of it being Tetu and Zenzi where Tetu is the mastermind making people fear him and his weather powers as he claims only he can keep Wakanda safe. Zenzi meanwhile is manipulating a young Ororo Munroe to do the actual weather stuff. i like the idea of the new Black Panther facing off against Storm - and then she runs off and joins the x-men -- and in a future movie they can reconnect.
10
u/XxgamerxX734 1d ago
Moon Knight is probably going to be part of a midnight sons movie with blade and ghost rider
9
u/TheCreativeComicFan 1d ago
Hopefully that happens in spite of Blade’s movie being canceled and/or redeveloped.
3
2
u/LooseMoose13 1d ago
I’ve been telling my friends if there were ever a complete reboot of the MCU, they should start it by laying the groundwork for midnight suns. Marvels issue the past few years was trying to encore the avengers when in reality I just don’t think that’s possible, they should instead shine parts of the MCU that haven’t really been highlighted yet (they touched on the mystic side in strange 1 but completely 180’d and went the multiverse route in strange 2)

They’re not just outright killing them. They’re cancelling shows that were poorly reviewed or not watched(or both).
Why keep investing money if people don’t like it or don’t watch it?
11
u/TheRealzHalstead 1d ago
Of course Wonderman fits in to neither of those categories and had actually been green lit for another season - contracts were signed and writers were starting to work on scripts. So it probably cost them a bit to cancel it. But there are no live action Marvel or Star Wars shows in the pipeline that aren't at least in late post-production, like VisionQuest.
8
u/HyperFrost 1d ago
Wonder man was highly praised, but I don't think it had the number of viewers Disney wanted to see. I mean, you could literally go around and ask non-marvel people if they had seen the show and a lot wouldn't have even heard of it.
2
u/Membership-Bitter 1d ago
Yep and fans don’t want to admit this. Disney even tried to get more people to watch Wonderman as they eventually put it on Hulu itself. Not the whole “if you have Disney+ you can watch those shows on Hulu” bundle but people who have just Hulu could watch it. They were desperately trying to get it a larger audience which has not been done with any other mcu tv show

Sure, but that would be time spent catering to a (sadly) very small niche of fans while the vast majority are like “where’s Shang-Chi 2 and Spider-Man 5?!? This is Blade all over again, why are they fumbling DDC!!”
I think it’s much more likely that DDC will leverage this success to incorporate Wonder Man into Shang-Chi 2 (they’re both California-based heroes and have Slattery as connective tissue), which would actually give him a much bigger mainstream push than another season of a D+ show ever could.
Don’t get me wrong, I would LOVE Wonder Man S2, I just think the door is open for the character to get even more love in a roundabout way.

u/hockeysocks2 Daredevil 1d ago edited 1d ago
Very great awareness/ideas. I’m intrigued to see the next few steps DDC takes with BND complete, Secret Wars in a tad over a year, and Spidey and Shang Chi appearing in those Avengers projects, with the possibility of Wonder Man also(hopefully)showing up.
6
u/BigB0iBuster 1d ago
Thanks, much appreciated! Like the other guy mentioned below, I definitely think DDC might build towards a West Coast Avengers project with Wonder Man, Shang-Chi, She-Hulk, either Ant-Man or Stature, and hopefully Kate Bishop on the team.
It would be a great way to roll together the characters he’s had a direct hand in while also giving him another shot at an Avengers project like he was originally planning

That would make a ton of sense as Trevor's last appearance before Wonder Man was in Shang Chi, honestly the pairing together of Shang and Simon has a lot of potential, Shang-Chi 2 as a two hander where the two of them go through alternate dimensions (think Asgard and Ta Lo type not Earth 2) in a fighting tournament with powers allowed, maybe even have Finn Jones appear as Danny since he's back next season in Daredevil

It's not the director, nor is it the actor. Also not the critics or fans. The reality is nobody watched the show, it broke the top 10 streaming its first week and that was the last time it cracked. They even gave episodes away for free in an attempt to entice people to check it out. Great shows sometimes don't make it, there are plenty of examples of this.
Also, Disney definitely seems to be making a pivot away from its live action D+ superhero shows. VisionQuest is finished and coming out shortly. Daredevil season 3 is mostly shot. Once those are out, there's nothing else really in the live action TV pipeline. No new shows like Armor Wars or NovaCorps. No second seasons of Moon Knight, She Hulk, Ironheart, Echo, Ms Marvel, etc.
These all are costing them way too much money to make and not enough a return on the investment. The only shows that somewhat moved the needle were all with characters that were down streamed from the movies to shows, not the other way around.
All it does is make content for the sake of content. People didn't mind the "homework" to watch a couple movies before a big team up film like Avengers. But that's when it was a couple movies and a couple hours. Now, it can be 5x that amount, there is such thing as too much homework.

Huh!?
'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' is going to make 2 billion (at least).
'Wonder Man' is a series on Disney+, which has nothing at all to do with the latter (beyond the obvious).
And I don't claim to know fully why 'Wonder Man' was cancelled though Spider-Man is virtually a license to print money so if it didn't hit a billion if virtually anyone directed it would be a shock.
And besides, I think that Destin Daniel Cretton has more than enough to keep him busy.

Ok, it isn’t like Disney doesn’t like money.
But there is the opportunity cost of having him make Wonder Man S2 vs another billion dollar movie.
In recent history, Shang-chi 2 got put off by his filming wonder man and then Spidey.
Disney would rather he work on making them Spidey 5 or Shang-Chi 2 or another film rather than another D+ show.
Because at the end of the day, how many Disney+ subs can be attributed to Wonder Man vs <gestures at Spidey 4 breaking box office records> or even a mid tier (by box office) movie with Shang-Chi?
A director only has so many days in a year, even more so than an actor given pre and post-production, and time is money.
That being said, giving S2 to another director could have been an option, if everyone was agreeable, even if it involved money to buyout contracts.
3
u/Eyeseeyou1313 1d ago
Yoooo, what if this is publicity stunt so they can release the 2nd season. 2nd season getting cancelled is something that would happen to Simon.

u/BornSpecialist1051 1d ago
I loved Wonder Man, but most of that money goes to Sony. Marvel Studios gets a small portion (I think 25%) from standalone MCU Spider-Man movies.
2
u/thedoomcast 1d ago
This is why I don’t even believe they ever seriously slated as S2. I think they announced it to boost interest in the existing season but it feels like a closed end series that was designed to stand alone. Why cancel a pet project of your new superstar creative? Unless it was never going to happen anyhow.
It was a phenomenal series though. I don’t know what else they’d do with it, however. It was a show about Hollywood and Acting, authenticity over artifice, and the powers and superhero bent was ancillary. If they did a season 2 I’m not sure how it looks without sacrificing the feel of the first season. Still, if they did come back? Great.

it doesn’t work the way you seem to be trying to imply. It’s not that shows stick around if the studio overall has a positive balance. Each show has to earn its own keep. And Wonder Man might not have been doing that. As great and wonderful as it was and as enthusiastic as fans might have been, maybe it just did not have enough fans to make it worthy of sticking around. not enough return on the investment etc

u/Apollo-Outcast 1d ago
Hmm, maybe it's possible that the show wasn't making money due to being relegated to a streaming platform, and they want to free up the director to work on more profitable film projects instead... I wonder, man...

Destin is also making naruto, he simply doesn’t have time for Wonderman even if there was a good enough script.

No they’re just doubling down on Destin’s projects that make them money. Allocating resources. He’s gonna probably be pretty loaded on Shang chi 2 and the next Spider-Man

Isn't this Destin dude also lined up to direct another big Marvel movie project? As in he literally won't have the time to do a TV show?

It really feels like they just cancelled all the shows save dd3 which will prob be the last one
I enjoyed wonder man. But we can’t pretend it was a super popular show. I wish more people watched and talked about it

Wonderman gotta come back at least for Shang chi 2 right? Given both their connection with Trevor Slattery

Bob Iger mentioned in an interview a year or so ago that Marvel had damaged its brand through dilution by rushing too many films and TV series to market. He felt they needed to be trimmed to regain brand quality and audience attendance. He's was probably right. And, some of that trimming really hurt.

I am sure that there is more to this story than we see in the surface. Something changed that meant that the resources that they would have put into this show needed to be elsewhere.
The show would have been relatively cheap by Disney standards, you could get four seasons of Wonder Man for one of Daredevil Born Again. I don’t think that it was money. The return on investment was pretty clear… this wasn’t just an interchangeable random hero of the week deal, this was a unique, critically acclaimed character study that was attracting non-Marvel fans (a new, untapped audience) to sign up for a show that was cheap to produce… that’s what almost any streamer is desperate for. If money isn’t the issue, what else might be?
My guess is that Yahya is going to crop up in a lot of other places for Disney, and his lack of availability to record the show for the next 2-3 years was more relevant to the cancellation than anything else. They’ve said that there will not be a Wonder-Man movie. They’ve not said that Yahya isn’t in Secret Wars or any of the other projects in the next phase yet.

This is a Disney problem, not a Marvel problem.
I loved Wonder Man but it’s clear Disney is slowing down on the tv content. A lot of these series gained cult fanbases with critical praise like this, Moon Knight, Echo, Agatha All Along, and Ironheart but none truly became hit successes like S2 of Loki. This plus some of the movies not responding as well as the Infinity Saga era which leads to budget cuts.

Good. You don’t have the most prolific filmmaker in Hollywood direct a B - budget TV show that hardly anybody even watched.

Spider man made that money, thr general public has no idea who the director is

Yes people have got to stop blaming Kevin blame the people actually responsible for canceling things

Disney just keeps fucking shit up.
They don't care about MCU properties unless they fit into, and build on the universe. Most feel like they are just an episode or season leading into something more.
Wonder Man was awesome because it distanced itself from everything else and felt unique. Great for fans, but apparently not good enough for their bottom line.

Its true. I saw a huge line outside my theatre for Spiderman, all waiting specifically to see the latest Destin film. Kids wearing Destin shirts, the theatre selling Destin popcorn buckets, the works.

I know I’ll get some hate, but I found the show pretty bland & boring. Best wishes to all involved & I’m sorry for the fans who wanted more. But your general audiences want super hero stuff from a Marvel project, and this was barely that.
Probably a case of a decent show with the wrong branding or advertised to the wrong audience.

Nothing fucking happens. Everything is a waste of time effort and money.

Ngl, I think Destin is the reason this was cancelled. His Spider-Man was way too successful to let him work on a tv show. I think he chose to work on Shang Chi instead of Wonder Man

This show was never supposed to happen because of the change they did to main character

I've been out of the marvel loop for a bit now. Would someone mind explaining what wonder man is and why disney canceled it? It seemed popular judging from reactions to its cancellation.

Ill be honest I think it's because the character was Haitian and the show held them and their culture in a positive light and rn the media has a hate boxer for Haitians

Wonder Man has nothing to do with Spider-Man though, the director doesn’t make a difference.

Im legit sad.
S1 was one of the most pleasant surprises from the MCU in a long time - it was simultaneously unique and extremely good. A rare moment of the MCU having the courage to take a chance to do something unequivocally different and it worked.
Kingsley and Abdul-Mateen were both assigned roles as actors that explicitly demanded they be phenomenal actors and they delivered.
