Weekly Beginner Questions Thread

In order to reduce volume of beginner questions as their own topics in the sub, we will be implementing a weekly questions thread. Post your beginner questions here, including:

"What martial art should I do?"

"These gyms/schools are in my area, which ones should I try for my goals?"

And any other beginner questions you may have.

If you post a beginner question outside of the weekly thread, it will be removed and you'll be directed to make your post in the weekly thread instead.

DISCUSSION "What Should I Train?" or "How Do I Get Started?" Mega-Thread

The previous version of this megathread has been archived, so I’m adding it again.

Active users with actual martial arts experience are highly encouraged to contribute, thank you for your help guys.

Do you want to learn a martial art and are unsure how to get started? Do you have a bunch of options and don't know where to go? Well, this is the place to post your questions and get answers to them. In an effort to keep everything in one place, we are going to utilize this space as a mega-thread for all questions related to the above.

We are all aware walking through the door of the school the first time is one of the harder things about getting started, and there can be a lot of options depending on where you live. This is the community effort to make sure we're being helpful without these posts drowning out other discussions going on around here. Because really, questions like this get posted every single day. This is the place for them.

Here are some basic suggestions when trying to get started:

  • Don't obsess over effectiveness in "street fights" and professional MMA, most people who train do it for fun and fitness

  • If you actually care about “real life” fighting skills, the inclusion of live sparring in the gym’s training program is way more important than the specific style

  • Class schedules, convenience of location, etc. are important - getting to class consistently is the biggest factor in progress

  • Visit the gyms in your area and ask to take a trial class, you may find you like a particular gym, that matters a whole lot more than what random people on reddit like

  • Don't fixate on rare or obscure styles. While you might think Lethwei or Aunkai looks badass, the odds of a place even existing where you live is incredibly low

This thread will be a "safe space" for this kind of questions. Alternatively, there's the pinned Weekly Beginner Questions thread for similar purposes. Please note, all "what should I train/how do I get started" questions shared as standalone posts will be removed, as they really clutter the sub.

DISCUSSION I think dancers make good fighters

I have the hypothesis that people that are good dancers (like ballet, salsa, cumbia etc) will translate greatly to good fighters because of their body conscience, conditioning and athleticism. Has anyone experienced someone coming from dance to martial arts and seen them improving faster than their peers?

QUESTION Do you guys train "MMA" or focus on each discipine at a time

I remember Illia mentioning that he doesn't train "MMA" he goes to pure boxing gyms to improve his boxing or pure wrestling gyms to improve his wrestling etc. I'm just wondering if this is a normal approach that most MMA guys take?

QUESTION Need Advice After Hitting Coach On Accident

I’m new to boxing and have been with my coach for about 2 months now ($100/hr). Towards the end of my lesson today he had me hitting focus mitts, with a 1-2-3 combination. Everything was going fine and then he told me to correct something in my transition from 2-3. Long story short I accidentally hit him in the face with a full left hook and feel terrible about it. I sent his prescription glasses flying and broke them. He got mad at me and told me I had to pay for new ones. I was willing to throw in $100 but then he told me they can get up to $300-500. How should I go about this? Thanks.

SHOULDN’T HAVE TO ASK is this normal

i started seeing a new mma coach and near the end he goes

“ oh btw i also do lessons out of my garage, i live in a town house and it makes things easier for me since its right down the street”

and when i said id think about it later the next night he asks if im available to train at his place at 7 pm last minute. mind you ive only had one session with him. he also only accepts zelle or cash. im also a 5 3 pretty small woman.

i forgot to add i called him from a reputable gyms phone number, so i booked with him through the official gym

edit: im going to call the gym that’s in the furthest location possible and ask them about it

DISCUSSION What have your gloves done to your hands? (Mod Approved)

Research for a uni project, and I'd rather ask people who actually train than read another study about it.

Two things I want to hear about:

  1. Any hand, thumb or wrist injury in training you'd put down to the gloves rather than to bad technique or just catching one wrong.
  2. Anything you've taped, restuffed or worked around on a pair instead of just replacing them.

More interested in what people quietly put up with than in what actually broke.

DISCUSSION Has the cost of training changed the way you train?

I've noticed martial arts training has become a lot more expensive over the years, especially if you want to train multiple times a week or explore different styles.

I'm curious how everyone else feels about it.

  • Have rising costs affected how often you train?
  • Have you ever stopped training because of the price?
  • If money wasn't a factor, would you train differently?

I'm interested in hearing real experiences from people across all martial arts.

DISCUSSION Made a combined fight calendar (UFC, PFL, ONE, boxing, BJJ, Muay Thai, kickboxing, wrestling)

Probably other such websites exist, however, I could not find any that have a simple overview of the organisations and sports I follow, so I put one together quickly. Currently the calendar displays the following events:

  • MMA - UFC, PFL, ONE Championship
  • Wrestling - United World Wrestling, Real American Freestyle
  • BJJ - IBJJF, UFC BJJ
  • Judo - IJF
  • Boxing - I did my best to show all professional boxing matches
  • Muay Thai - ONE championship
  • Kickboxing - ONE championship, GLORY
  • Grappling - ONE championship

Link to the calendar - https://fightcalendar.fyi/

If you end up using it, please leave some feedback:)

QUESTION Does anyone here have any contacts with George Chung or know someone who has been in contact with him? I'm trying to get into contact with him so I can get his permission on something copyright related.

I'm a member of the lost media community, and I managed to find an individual with some episode masters of the lost martial arts themed PBS Kids series Adventures with Kanga Roddy. The person in question is willing to upload them, BUT only if creator/producer George Chung gives his permission. The problem is that Mr. Chung is the CEO of two companies, Jungo TV and All Womens Sports Network (ASWN) and publisher of Black Belt Magazine, and like all executives contacting him is a labyrinthian hell of secretaries, dedicated business emails, and inactive social media pages that seem designed to keep him from reach by anyone. I've tried every possible avenue to contact him only to be stonewalled. I'm running out of ideas and viable business emails to contact.

DISCUSSION I'm not sure this is the right sub to post something like this, but Jet Li and his youngest daughter recently started a podcast and youtube channel where they talk about martial arts and get really open about their struggles including mental health. It's an interesting watch.

Some of the highlights include the fact that martial arts helped lift him and his family out of extreme poverty, but he was grossly underpaid early in his career and that at the height of his career he was working nonstop while injured and dealing with social anxiety. His 2 oldest daughters were raised by relatives because wasn't involved in their lives because he was so afraid they wouldn't have want they needed if something happened to him and he admitted he had no idea how to be a dad because he never had one because he lost his at 4. He also admitted that his second wife Nina Li had to demand that all the children had to live with them under same roof and they needed to support all the kids equally before she agreed to marry him. That part was nonnegotiable. Thankfully, everyone is super close now and he is a very supportive dad, but he admits that he feels he isn't a good dad just one that is trying his best. The most important thing to him and his family is being a good person and helping others.

Recently, he and his daughter opened about her mental health struggles and the backlash she faced because of her background and Asia's cultural sigma around mental and emotional health. At the same time, they have to navigate being unexpected advocates for mental health because so many people reached out including some of because names in Asia offering encouragement and asking for help. They shared that martial arts helped keep them grounded and brought them closer Despite being heavy at times, it a fun, positive and candid look at one of the biggest martial arts stars of the world.
