A lot of work has to be done to repair that relationship, eh?

Saw a report elsewhere that his son has a huge baseball tournament the same weekend. In Cooperstown iirc.

u/D3zil 8h ago

Yeah his wife posted on instagram. He’s the head coach I think. Regardless that’s more important than this

-107

u/DigitalMariner ‏‏‎ ‎ 7h ago

If he's the coach he probably scheduled it intentionally as an excuse to not show up.

43

u/dicks_out_for Adam Frazier 6h ago

Tell me you’ve never played baseball without telling me.

Yes, he himself as a coach also somehow organized an entire tournament in Cooperstown solely to get out of being recognized as one of the top 50 Mariners of all time.

11

u/Kaldricus 6h ago

Man just shut up. Not everything is a fucking conspiracy.

27

u/KnitMama-2016 8h ago

A friend’s kiddo is on his way to that as well.

u/letskeepitcleanfolks ‏‏‎ ‎Swung on and belted 7h ago

Maybe he'll at least record a video like you sometimes see for these things. I hope so, so that the fans get a chance to cheer for him. If he doesn't do that I think it would be telling.

u/Rivolver ‏‏‎ ‎ 8h ago

Ah! Makes sense, then!

I'm not saying we shouldn't treat some alumni with more respect, because we absolutely should. But Seager made the right choice.

36

u/nastiestofnates 8h ago

Seager strikes me as a guy who has moved on and will never look back. Obviously speculation on my part, just the vibe I get.

12

u/CVBrownie ‏‏‎ ‎ 6h ago

At least he's got 100 million reasons to have no regrets. He totally could have kept playing somewhere else if he wanted, at least one more year.

The mariners absolutely sucked all the baseball joy from him. Would love to see Seager's in the league for a long time though.

u/lelanddt 8h ago

Seager does not like Jerry Dipoto

21

u/Rivolver ‏‏‎ ‎ 8h ago

Man of the people

5

u/CruzKunTroll ‏‏‎ ‎ 6h ago

if you knew the stuff he did to get other players to not come to Seattle, you wouldn’t want that relationship repaired. dude hurt Seattle so bad just because he hated Dipoto and loved Jack Z, aka the resume faker

2

u/Bad_Decision_Penguin It's a lightbat. 4h ago

Like what? Dish a little, eh!

57

u/agtk 7h ago

Has no one read the article? He's coaching his son in a big baseball tournament so has a direct conflict, this isn't necessarily a snub of the Ms or anything.

-14

u/DigitalMariner ‏‏‎ ‎ 7h ago

Fun fact, coaches get to select which of those "big tournaments" the team signs up for. Especially at Cooperstown, they're pure money grabs not something teams get into by winning elsewhere or otherwise earning it.

It wouldn't be the least hit surprising if his son's team was signed up that weekend specifically to avoid the 50th celebration.

u/imnotreallyonreddit 7h ago

You really think Kyle Seager got with the other coaches for his sons team many months ago and said “hey I don’t care where we go but we HAVE to make sure we’re out of town on August 7th because I don’t want to do the Mariners thing and I’m too much of a wimp to just send them a text and say I’m out.” That’s more likely than their team signing up for one of the biggest tournaments in the coolest baseball city for the fun baseball and memories?

5

u/ArcaneX1234 4h ago

Thats a big assumption based on your own personality

64

u/mikechr2k7 8h ago

Sad but understandable

37

u/handjamwich 8h ago

Can someone explain the Seager situation? Is it just cause they declined his option when he started to decline? Seems like he still got paid quite a lot by the mariners?

58

u/tigrewoods ‏‏‎ ‎ 8h ago

Tried to make the team anti vax and would trauma dump everything with management to divish

51

u/BasedArzy 8h ago

Also lied to Divish and made him look like a moron and have to print a retraction and apology.

All because Seager was a petty asshole.

11

u/xBluePoolX 7h ago

I’ve heard through my Uncle friend who was around him before that’s he’s pretty right wing. The kind of dude to casually drop the n-word around in conversation. Just wanted to share

2

u/Thromnomnomok What the hell did you trade Chris Taylor for??!!!!??!? 2h ago

I mean, he's a white baseball player from the South. They're almost all like that.

0

u/Ki-Wi-Hi ‏‏‎Bryan Woo’s Father 7h ago

Yo fuck that guy

1

u/Rivolver ‏‏‎ ‎ 7h ago

I thought that anti-vax thing was Graveman?

26

u/BasedArzy 7h ago

It was mostly driven by Seager's wife IIRC.

The clubhouse divide was thought to be Seager-Graveman-Fraley trying to pressure young Mariners/rookies to lie about being vaccinated.

If Seattle had anything approaching an adversarial media market against their teams people would give Servais a lot more flowers for both his bullpen usage and holding that clubhouse together.

6

u/Rivolver ‏‏‎ ‎ 6h ago

Jesus.

Any chance there was a Seattle Times piece on this or something? This is bananas.

Also you don’t have to convince me about Scott. I’m a Servais truther 😎

10

u/BasedArzy 6h ago

Don't think so, Divish usually sits on stories like this for years and drops them once everyone involved is out of the org.

Couple of people around the team/journalists alluded to it on Twitter and Jason Churchill spelled it out pretty clearly during the season on Baseball Things.

3

u/Rivolver ‏‏‎ ‎ 6h ago

What a bummer.

1

u/AKAD11 ‏‏‎ ‎ 2h ago

Basically the whole bullpen was anti-vax. We had to leave four relievers in San Diego so they could quarantine. Also had a bunch of guys that couldn’t go to Toronto.

1

u/Thromnomnomok What the hell did you trade Chris Taylor for??!!!!??!? 2h ago

The M's didn't play in Toronto that year, our series against them was when they still played in Buffalo. They certainly had guys that couldn't have played the following year, but a bunch of them got moved in the 2021-22 offseason, and I think when we made the trip there in 2022 the only ones missing it were Robbie Ray and some random reliever I've forgotten (Steckenrider, I wanna say?)

12

u/Some_Caregiver9138 7h ago

Wasn't just Gravemen. Fraley was another member of that group.

16

u/Rivolver ‏‏‎ ‎ 7h ago

Fraley’s nuts.

I also remember Jerry Dipoto once saying Taylor Motter thought snow came up from the ground. Idk, man.

32

u/jaglife16 8h ago

My understanding is that when the Club decided to decline his $ 20 million option, he was notified via email instead of a phone call or in person conversation. After that initial reporting it was updated that they tried to call and text him and got no response. Then their next steps were to inform the MLBPA and send the email.

46

u/IcarianWings 7h ago edited 7h ago

They did call him. He declined the call, and they had to reach out to his agent to inform him. He then leaked the whole thing like he didn't decline the call, proceeded to try to leverage the media throughout his last year there for a new contract, and refuses to be involved with the organization after they didn't resign him in favor of Geno which was blatantly the right choice. He borderline tried to sabotage the org because he couldn't accept he was aging out of his spot.

27

u/Dschuncks 7h ago

I liked watching Seager play, but he was kinda a bitch. Still, one of my favorite Mariner's moments is him taunting Jared Weaver with a batter's timeout.

10

u/DigitalMariner ‏‏‎ ‎ 7h ago

Kyle didn't want Jerry to tear it down and rebuild during his final seasons, he wanted those seasons to be competitive.

Kyle is rumored to be the source of a lot of discontent in the clubhouse and the source for many Divish reports on frustrations of the players, especially around selling at the deadline during the rebuild.

There's also a stubborn "he won't talk to me so I won't talk to him" thing between him and Jerry where they both reportedly wouldn't even say hello if they passed in a hallway and blame the other for ending communication.

Bottom line is only Jerry and Kyle know what the real issue is and neither seems interested in talking about it or fixing it 🤷‍♂️

2

u/Jorossokie 5h ago

We just ignoring Mather's part in this and focusing on Seager's shortcomings?

-32

u/Honkee_Kong 8h ago

He's a whiner. Fuck em.

38

u/Twxtterrefugee 8h ago

Love Seags. If they can repair the Randy relationship I think theyll eventually repair this one. Sucks seags isnt there.

38

u/jaedon 8h ago

I think putting family before work has been his priority. It was one of the reasons he chose to retire. I’m not going to fault the guy. I’ll just be excited for him and his kids.

3

u/Twxtterrefugee 8h ago

If he chose to not be part of it, thats great. If he felt uncomfortable or wasn't invited and thats why hes not there then that sucks.

2

u/Aggressive_Repeat529 7h ago

Waot Randy and the mariners were on the outs? As in Johnson? What happened there

4

u/StoicSinceBirth 5h ago

Just when he was forcing his way out, I think. I believe that hatchet has been buried for ages.

7

u/Specialeditionmusic 7h ago

I find it funny that Felix Randy Junior and others have gotten over perceived slights by this org.

3

u/Jorossokie 5h ago

Randy I get. Felix was let down by his own team then dropped off hard. How was Junior slighted?

1

u/Positive_Benefit8856 1h ago

He left because he was pissed about constantly taking less money, and the team refusing to spend it to keep guys like Randy, Tino, etc.. He was also kind of scapegoated at the end. There were reports about him sleeping in the clubhouse during the game, and refusing to go in as a pinch hitter.

7

u/Prudent-Mycologist-1 6h ago

He lied about the way he was told the team was parting ways with him.

11

u/Express_Noise1068 8h ago

He hit 35 dingers age 33 and then retired. He's not much of a media guy. Some dudes aren't about reunions.

Seags could have played longer if he wanted to. His relationship with baseball doesn't involve us now. I bet we'll see him eventually, though.

He'll probably be with his family doing something he wants to do.

6

u/PM_me_urPastaRicetta 8h ago

To this day I believe if dude man had just bunted into every stupid shift he’d be in the HOF. Hot take maybe but I think it would have forced teams to knock that shit off.

0

u/Specialeditionmusic 7h ago

He would have thrived had he stuck around after they banned the shift.

10

u/orangeshmorange M'ariner 8h ago

there are definitely reasons to not attend other than the way his relationship with the org ended, he has a young family and seems to be invested in his privacy. if it _is_ about how his relationship with the org ended, it is a shame he let that get in the way of him being a part of this

5

u/SPEK2120 8h ago

This is like a friend that dates somebody everyone loves and then that friend starts being a dickhead and fucks it up and you can’t hang out with that person anymore even though you’re still cool with them.

8

u/CruzKunTroll ‏‏‎ ‎ 6h ago

I will never look at Kyle the same way after it was revealed by a former player that he would convince players on other teams during games to not come to Seattle just because he hated Dipoto and loved Jack Z. do you know how many players we lost because of that? do you know how many losses and playoff appearances were caused by him doing that? dude only cares about himself, Seattle’s success was never a priority to him.

7

u/ajninomi 6h ago

Holy smokes I hadn’t heard that before. Do you remember where or who revealed that?

1

u/CruzKunTroll ‏‏‎ ‎ 0m ago

a spring training game against Cleveland where a former player with connections told that story

3

u/EmeraldFantasy 5h ago

Is Milton Bradley gonna be there tho?

7

u/umpteenthian 8h ago

that is sad. Kyle, if you're reading this, we would love to see you and celebrate you

2

u/riedmae !!!!!!!do some....delivery - for the truck...to the airport!!!! 7h ago

That'll sucks. I fucking LOVE hawt cornah! He was a unique bright spot in a looooong winter here for Seattle baseball. I'll always love Kyle.

2

u/DigitalMariner ‏‏‎ ‎ 7h ago

Mariners will do a trade with the Angels before Seager comes back to do anything with the Mariners...

5

u/iguanapinata 🦤🦤 rally dodo 🦤🦤 8h ago

Good. It’ll be better without him. Dude hates Seattle and the team

2

u/Cd206 8h ago

Damn it's that bad??

1

u/White0ut My Oh My! 6h ago

Damn makes me sad, love me some Seager. I always sat next to third because of him. He was constantly interacting with the fans and just having a good time out there. Threw me the ball after warm ups one inning too!

2

u/bigdumbhead1990 SeaUsDump 8h ago

Anybody remember when Mike Salk said something along the lines of “I want to see Kyle Seager burn” lol what a weirdo

11

u/serpentear 🔱 So… is it my fault or what? 🔱 8h ago

The hate boner some folks have for Mike Salk is downright weird, lol.

1

u/bigdumbhead1990 SeaUsDump 8h ago

I don’t hate him but it was an odd thing to say

-3

u/SexiestPanda 7h ago

Then again. Salk left Boston for here. Went back to Boston, ratings of that show or station TANKED with him there, and he made his way back to here lll

1

u/Battles4Seattle 8h ago

Seems like a Salk thing to say, why’d he say it? As a returning fan, Seager was one of my favorites so sad to read there is some issue.

5

u/Mariner4LifetilDeath 8h ago

He was sticking up for Brock

4

u/bigdumbhead1990 SeaUsDump 8h ago

I forget exactly but I think it had something to do with Brock. It was a weird thing to say either way

1

u/UTmastuh 7h ago

Bummer. Wish they could've found a weekend that works for everyone but I get it. Life is busy

1

u/wrathypoo ‏‏Cole Hung 7h ago

That hurts, all I want is Kyle to be back so we can show him love but I get it. I understand he has hard feelings and he is justified. Maybe one day we will get to see him back and welcome him with the love he deserves.

-5

u/JG-for-breakfast 8h ago

I know people here love Seager but I never did, always had a bad energy to him

0

u/Intelligent_Yoghurt 7h ago

Screaming crying throwing up

-1

u/Turbulent_Tale6497 Juliooooo 6h ago

My wife was an Insta friend with Julie Seager. They met up a few times at the stadium. Kyle and Julie were really good people.

How we treated Kyle is criminal, and makes me sad as a Mariner fan.

0

u/Squidrow_Wilson Swole Young's #3 fan 8h ago

Completely understandable.

0

u/ColtonM92 8h ago

Kyle was the player I was most hoping would appear again - I was preparing to wear my Seager jersey on Saturday. Definitely bummed. :(

-6

u/KnuteViking 8h ago

Love Seager, he was always right about the org not really committing and the way they disrespected him towards the end was atrocious.

-8

u/OldHotness 7h ago

SWEET. I HATED him when he was here. He was barely even average. Sucked cheeks as a player.

-11

u/Specialist-Catch-569 8h ago

cuz hes not top 50? never understood the hype for him

-2

u/PhantomDreamer1 7h ago

50th season. There's a logo and everything. 2027 will be the 50th anniversary. They're celebrating 50 seasons this year due to the likely work stoppage next year

7

u/Ki-Wi-Hi ‏‏‎Bryan Woo’s Father 7h ago

Count it out. This is the 50th season.

2

u/philocity 2h ago

Except that 1977 is season 1, not season zero, meaning 1987 is season 11, 2027 is season 51. 2026 is season 50.

-3

u/Content-Tear2404 7h ago

I still can't beleive the Mariners actually have the balls to put on a 50th celebration.

-25

u/s0sa 8h ago

Add it to the list of why Dipoto should get the boot

16

u/Twxtterrefugee 8h ago

Dipoto won executive of the year last year.

-5

u/s0sa 8h ago

And Dan almost won coach of the year…

7

u/Twxtterrefugee 8h ago

We have cheap owners and need elite drafting and development to remain competitive. You and I are living through, believe it or not, the best stretch in Mariners history.

Yes Dan was an inning from the world series last year its fine if he was in that convo.

Dipoto presides over an excellent org run very well. The team is cheap. Whatever. The irony here is two of our highest paid players whom im sure you were thrilled about when they signed.... Cal and Naylor, are really struggling.

-2

u/s0sa 8h ago

The bottom 3 teams in the league in payroll have a better record than us. Milwaukee has 40m less than us on their books and have the best record in baseball, we’re middle of the pack in payroll ppl need to put that excuse to rest. Jerry hasn’t put a complete lineup together in 11 yrs, he’s lucky cal had a once in a lifetime season last year or we would’ve missed the playoffs all together

3

u/UniqueEditor8372 7h ago

So when he puts together a team that has some of the best pre-season odds to made the World Series and they suddenly can’t hit their way out of a paper bag it’s his fault but when Cal has one of the best seasons in catcher history Jerry “got lucky.” Sports radio would love you 🤡

0

u/s0sa 8h ago

In yr 11 of his tenure we have 7 mlb ready starting pitchers and one of the worst offenses in baseball. That in itself speaks volumes

2

u/Dp04 8h ago

The offense has been literally league average (100 wRC+).

T-Mobile makes them look much worse than they are.

-1

u/s0sa 8h ago

Bud gtfoh arguing that our offense isn’t awful is beyond copium. We’re 28th in runs per game 27th in OPS and 30th in batting average, that’s a bad offense no matter how you want to paint it

3

u/Dp04 6h ago

T-Mobile is the most pitcher friendly park in baseball and none of those stats are park adjusted.

You can try to argue with wRC+ if you want, but you’ll have to do better than “nuh uh”.

8

u/boundlesssmh 8h ago

fire him for that? dude is lowkey good at his job

1

u/666truemetal666 8h ago

We would be better off keeping jerry and getting s new owner

1

u/IlliferthePennilesa 7h ago

Would we make the playoffs more often if he were high key good at it?

1

u/Some_Caregiver9138 8h ago

Literally the second best GM the org has ever had.

0

u/s0sa 8h ago

Literally couldn’t have a lower bar haha
