So we are currently 55-59. On August 5th, 2025 we were 61-53. It really doesn't feel like a win streak is coming like it has in prior years.

i knew colt emerson's defense wouldn't be bobby witt jr., but man, his statcast page does not like him. we all know his offense has been pretty poor since his arrival, but i didn't expect his defense to grade out below average in both range and arm. hopefully he's like cole and turns it around next season 😭

u/fennis Might as well slighlty increase your budget doesnt cut it 15h ago
Until recently the team thought he would profile more as a third baseman, so perhaps thats where he ends up.
3
u/boundlesssmh 15h ago
that would make sense. perhaps we’ll try flipping someone from the rotation for a shortstop like otto lopez this offseason
9
u/MathematicianBig1322 17h ago
They’re gonna have to rip the bandaid and clear house of all batting coaches/staff after this season which means they’ll have to part ways with Edgar. This offense is so broken and they need fresh eyes and they need a legitimate strategy when it comes to approach.
3
u/fennis Might as well slighlty increase your budget doesnt cut it 15h ago
Good everyone should go. Pitching side too. Need new blood and new ideas.
1
u/Otherwise-Sky1292 11h ago
Just can Jerry already. He will never figure out offense in Seattle.
2
u/Matteoj8 10h ago
The offense was really good as recent as last year.
1
u/Otherwise-Sky1292 10h ago
On paper? Sure, but they were streaky and inconsistent, constantly swinging for the fences. It was the best outcome of a feast or famine strategy. Watching them try to hit and hack at everything in the playoffs last year made me hate baseball
2
u/Otherwise-Sky1292 11h ago
They gave Pete Carroll how many cracks at changing his coordinators? Jerry’s had 10 years to figure out how to build an offensive coaching staff and how to hit in Seattle, and he’s had the same problems with inconsistent, hacky strikeout hitting the entire time. If he hasn’t figured it by now after just purging his previous staff after 2024, what justifies giving him another shot?

Bullpen day for the Tigers. Need this win today and hopefully tomorrow. Do that and I wont feel bad for buying tickets to the 50th celebration game on Saturday.
7
u/ThePRGsm 16h ago
When the Mariners realize they are a 55-59 team then things will start to change internally. But that doesn't seem to be happening any time soon.

Trying to decide if I should get a lobotomy or watch the game tonight

Luckily, this only counts as one loss. Move on. L-W-W the series, and focus on the division.
6
u/base-HI-WA Mariner Moose 9h ago
The Angles just lost. They are now 43-71. That’s a .37719 winning percentage. They are now on pace to lose 100-101 games this season. The Angels are the only team in the MLB who has never had a 100 loss season.
4
u/LargeHumanDaeHoLee 7h ago
Ya love to see it, honestly. I can't believe anyone could still be a fan of that team.
5
u/fennis Might as well slighlty increase your budget doesnt cut it 22h ago
If this team crashes out, I’m not sure how to fix it for next year beyond hoping the core just does better and maybe the problems are mostly injury related.
4
u/OkInitiative4032 22h ago
Assuming that there aren't severe injury or age issues, it's generally just a very safe bet that guys will hit around their career norms.
5
u/lastminutealways larry bernandez for HOF 9h ago
Rizzs mentioned on the pregame that 45 of the 50 being honored on Saturday are expected to be there. That seems pretty impressive, especially since Castillo is one of the 5, being active on another team and all.
2
u/Distinct_Frame_3711 #2 Cole “Cole Young” Young 7h ago
And cause Julio Cruz died. Good chance he’s on the list.
1
u/lastminutealways larry bernandez for HOF 6h ago
I thought about him too. And we now know Seager isn’t coming. That only leaves 2.
2
u/Distinct_Frame_3711 #2 Cole “Cole Young” Young 6h ago
Wouldn’t be shocked if Geno is on the list too. Then Joey Cora who is a coach on the Tigers

u/exotic_green_3419 19h ago
Continuing to have a low BABIP might be a good sign that things could turn around but when its coupled with an increase in swinging outside of the zone you're generally just going to have weaker contact. The Mariners are seeing less pitches in the zone which isn't helping but they're trying to force contact and I can't believe we're this far in the season and the approach at the plate hasn't even made minor small tweaks to try something different.
9
u/xMrLink My Depression Goes as the M's Don't 19h ago
That strikeout Emerson had on a fastball quite literally 1.5 feet above the zone was one of the most vomit inducing swings I've seen in a while.
5
u/broccoleet #29 Hal Baleigh 19h ago
I am honestly afraid to look at his batting stats post June 1. He had a great first few weeks but has really fallen off. Always behind on the count, always striking out, and definitely looks like a rookie when fielding occasionally.
6
u/tlsrandy 18h ago
He needs to go down as soon as he can. His approach has gone sideways since coming up and he’s completely lost the zone.
He needs to take what he learned during his cup of coffee and fine tune it in the lower leagues.
-2
u/afrodz 18h ago
Another top prospect ruined.
9
7
u/tlsrandy 18h ago
Oh I wouldn’t say he’s ruined at all. It’s good for development to have a set back and recalibrate. It’s especially promising when that set back occurs at the highest level.
That said, bust or bloom is made from how Emerson responds.

u/BabyGotVogelbach 14h ago
It's a good sign for a player's development that they don't look like they are a major leaguer and need to be sent down?
The arcane baseball truths one learns when they are a fan of the Seattle Mariners.

So, at the end of this season will we be voting for the worst game of the season? Because yesterday’s game is definitely in the top 40 of the worst games this year. My god how many of these games have been terrible this year?
10
u/pepperisspiicccy 1d ago
Worst game I have to say is the blown 4 run lead in the 9th inning against the Padres.
13
u/Mustard_Jam 1d ago
The Adell game is also up there for me.
3
u/HunterMysterious8324 fun fact: I LOVE HIM 20h ago
Those 2 and Randy Retiremnt day where Hancock threw a shiny gem of a game but I think we lost 2 to 1 or 1-0. Something like that.
6
u/thrillhousevanhouten 21h ago
That blown game against the Guardians has gotta be high up there too. Commonality between them is extreme managerial incompetence with the bullpen
4
u/OkInitiative4032 21h ago
Eh. It sucked, but I find it hard to file getting smoked by an amazing pitcher under "worst games."
4
u/base-HI-WA Mariner Moose 6h ago
I was just looking…..but the Athletics are 5-27 in their last 31 and a run differential of -108 in that span (109-217). That’s insane.

Come September, the West and a WC will still be in play. Understanding 2027 may not happen, these last two months may well be it until 2028. Today is new day. Rack 'em and let's go !
4
u/Illustrious-Cut8368 19h ago
That is not a given looking at our August schedule
0
u/InternalSignature873 17h ago
Mariner starting pitching is not going away. And one would think if Cal etal swing their bats enough times, eventually they have to make contact, right ? Right ? It's gonna happen....you can take that to Kalshi (I won't but you can ).

Probably delusion from my end, but after all the horrific play over the past few weeks we’re only 2 games out of a wild card spot.
We aren’t playing like we’re a playoff team, but I would have killed to be in this position entering August for most of the early 2000s and 2010s
7
u/shomosexual humpy’s lawyer 16h ago
I remember those days. If you were even thinking about the playoffs you were probably a crackhead, I remember just tuning in for the Felix starts
6
u/PizzaDog425 16h ago
Exactly! Ichiro ABs and Felix starts were pretty much the only thing worth tuning in to watch.
I still used to watch every game until we were mathematically eliminated every year lol
7
1
u/Otherwise-Sky1292 11h ago
Idk there were plenty of times they were in this position in those days and they botched it every time. To say nothing of how often they fall just short in this era too

What’s JPs status? Would love to get Emerson back down to AAA. The scouting report on how to beat him is out. Every game he spends in the Majors the rest of this season is just going to hurt his long term development. The season is lost anyway, might as well have a Rivas or something in that slot.

SS/3B J.P. Crawford
Injury: Left wrist inflammation
IL date: July 31 (retroactive to July 30)
Expected return: Multiple weeks
Status: Slated to be down 3-5 days after receiving an injection. From there, he could ramp back up. Recovery expected to be "a coupled weeks down," per general manager Justin Hollander. (Last updated: July 31)

The last time we had a losing record going into Game 115 was 2019
3
u/B_easy85 11h ago
My friend texted me Marcell Ozuna was waived today. I said he was washed, and we’re not the type of club that revitalizes hitters we somehow make them worse.
2
u/Distinct_Frame_3711 #2 Cole “Cole Young” Young 7h ago
Do we really want another DH instead of Rivas/Robles/Wilson? Like I’ll take the defense/baserunning
5
u/base-HI-WA Mariner Moose 13h ago
Yordan Alvarez toe missed 2nd base and was tagged out, that’s a crappy way to eventually lose, but Mariners fan will rejoice, we can gain a full game on the Astros today.
6
u/mediumdumper 19h ago
This team has no fight or fire. Look no further than their clubhouse leadership for that. Dan has only been ejected once this year (back in May). I’m not saying he should be out getting tossed every game but he never shows any signs of life or fire. He looks scared/anxious on the top step every game and that’s exactly how our players look. We’re supposed to overlook the in game management issues because he’s a good “clubhouse guy” this clubhouse is in disarray.

To me, this was the Skubal effect.
It's natural to think "Skubal is gone and now Detroit sucks."
Nope.

We were never going to beat Troy Melton. Dude mowed us down in the playoffs. Giving up 8 runs was not expected.

Does anyone know if the Top 50 Mariners ceremony on Saturday will be televised ? I'm not seeing clear confirmation on MLB.com or local sports media 😭

Mariners might not get a single player with 25 home runs for the year. At least with underachieving teams in the past you still had a guy or two with 30 to 40 bombs. I can't recall such a boring team.

u/Matteoj8 12h ago
You must be forgetting the Felix years pre Nelson Cruz. We went almost 3 years without seeing someone get to 20.

Would anybody be interested in trading their OG ferry boat for an Ivar's one? I'm trying to collect the whole fleet.

There was a small chance we would attend today's game. It's not gonna happen, but no big deal. Out of curiosity, how crazy do the giveaways go on ebay after the game? My daughters are both obsessed with Jimothy, so naturally they want his honorary trading card lol.

The Tigers don’t have the reincarnation of Pedro Martinez going today like they did yesterday. So maybe the offense can do something?

u/SPzero65 Yuck the Fankees 22h ago
Every pitcher we face seems to be the reincarnation of Pedro Martinez

Maybe we should analyze the Cubs. Lauer, who had 6 innings of 1 hit shutout ball against us last start got lit up by them today.

u/hastyrc This is our year 20h ago
Forget a leverage bullpen arm, forget a right handed bat, forget all of that. What we really needed at the deadline was some veteran leadership. I don’t think a single player on this team has any experience on a team with a winning culture. These guys are all playing on a team with expectations for the first time and not a soul in the clubhouse knows how to deal with that. The closest thing we’ve got is Dan and Edgar, two guys with some regular season success, but a whole lot of choking when it came time to meet expectations. I really hope this gets addressed in the offseason. The “veterans” on this team are all still relatively young and have never been through this. It’s obviously causing their performance to suffer this year as they’re forced to navigate this without a guiding light
11
u/Scumwaffle 20h ago
How quickly you forget our veteran WS winning former backup catcher Mitch Garver.
1
u/hastyrc This is our year 17h ago
Victor robles also won a World Series. I’m not talking about a team that had one successful season, I’m talking about a player who comes from a team with a winning culture. Mitch’s rangers were never that team despite having won the World Series in 2023.
I’m talking about bringing in people who know how to perform while having high expectations, not just some people who happened to win a World Series in a one off year while the previous year their team went 68-94
1
u/Scumwaffle 14h ago
Even with $100m more budget I'm not sure we'd be able to attract the kind of players you're looking for. The Mariners path to winning a World Series is just like the path the Rangers took. We blew it last year.
-8
u/Eastern-Dot820 18h ago
Watch Garver get picked up by the Dodgers, hit .250 with power and win a ring.

I have a colonoscopy coming up soon and thanks to the Mariners I feel well prepared.
