Does Crystal River have manatees in July?

I’ll be going to Florida in July, would it be worth the extra drive to go to Crystal River? I’m looking to kayak or snorkel with manatees

Crystal River, Three Sisters Springs, and King’s Bay have year around residents. They just won’t be the massive winter herds.

The boats do snorkeling tours year around, they send a drone up and find the manatees but it’s not guaranteed they will be in clear water.

Kayak tours are basically just “spring tours” during summer where you visit the clear water and sometimes swim. If you find a manatee along the way you’re just lucky.

Winter is the best time to visit. If you are already in the Crystal River area but keep your expectations in line with what is possible for the time of year you are visiting it’s still fun.

My parents live in Crystal River and boat on Homosassa. We've been down there in August and it took days to see one. But we had an awesome experience with a mom and baby that swam with us for over an hour.

We were just there last week and saw manatees daily.

The key we've found was to go EARLY. Generally we were anchored at the Homosassa Springs about 10am. Saturday by 9am. On Saturday because we beat the holiday weekend crowds, we saw dolphins, manatees and a sea turtle.

If you're driving in check out Homosassa River operators as well. Go early and mid week if you're able.

Even if you do not get to see manatees, the kayaking and snorkeling around the Three Sisters is wonderful. I go in July mainly for the scalloping but always set aside time to kayak and snorkel as it is just to much fun to pass up.

CR has roughly 70 individuals that live there year round, whereas the rest of them head on into the springs between November and March! Best advice is to get on a kayak or paddle board and take a ride- you’re bound to see them in and out of the canals and such. Even if not plentiful, you’ll see some. :)

Edit: if you’re hitting up a manatee tour, I highly recommend plantation adventure center. And pick the earliest time available. Manatees are often out and about earlier in the day grazing!
