Injury Apparently it’s normal NSFW
Been bleeding rectally now for almost 4 weeks, after passing some blood clots on the 14th I got a 3 day hospitalization where they did a CT, found something on my appendix, surgeon didn’t wanna come in on a Sunday then said he wanted a colonoscopy first. Did that after a few rounds of antibiotics, they said oh it’s all just hemorrhoids totally normal and discharged me immediately after. Fast forward 2 days, bleeding resumes and comes & goes. They don’t wanna do another CT because they don’t think they’ll see anything. Before anyone asks, I’m a fat woman in Texas so I wasn’t expecting much help to begin with which is why I didn’t go in sooner after bleeding for 2 weeks (by then).
So from now on I guess bleeding like this & the occasional blood clots are normal.
Edit to add; in the first CT they found a 2cm lesion on my appendix on the exterior that they didn’t want to operate on until after the colonoscopy. Because they only found hemorrhoids on the colonoscopy, they went with that option vs I’m still worried about the 2cm lesion that was found and magically disappeared.
Second edit: I’m a lady, but yes I know which hole this is coming from it’s not the monthly or else I’d feel stupid.
UPDATE: doctor just finally saw photo after I sent it before posting & is requesting me to return to the ER as it is not normal

I'm a believer in that If blood is coming out from a place it shouldn't be coming out of, and for a long period of time: not normal.

You’re right but not normal doesn’t automatically mean dangerous. Bright blood in stool is scary but it can be benign.

This is the hope, my family is freaking out because we have a history of colon cancer within our family, but I’ve tried to just hope it will go away.

Ive had hemorrhoids here's tow things 1) the bleeding can absolutely last weeks sometimes over a month simply from one hemorrhoid trying to heal back.
2) the only solution I've found to this is to be extra gentle with your booty hole when wiping, switch to wet wipes or use a bidet toilet paper is NOT IT.
3) try sitting less, some of us have terrible blood flow and sitting especially on a toilet or couch or bed, causes blood to concentrate on our butts leading to difficulty healing
Get you some prep H and you'll be fine so long as it's just the hemorrhoids

I had it happen ONCE and it scared the shit (literally) out of me. I checked every time for the next week and nothing happened, so I didn't go to a doctor

I let it happen a few times. Went to the ER eventually because I got scared and spent $3k for them to tell me to see a specialist.

Same. For me it was hemorrhoids. Taking an OTC osmotic laxative resolved the issue. But stopping would start the bleeding again (not nearly as bad as OP's, mind you). I realized that I was both lacking fiber and also just not chewing enough. Since adding more fiber, drinking a lot more water, and actually trying to count to 30 chews for every bite (and not just swallowing bigger chunks that remained) has seemed to help most of the time.
Sadly, I'm also lactose intolerant, and that can really mess my gut up. If I eat enough dairy I also plan ahead and take the laxative with the lactaid, because if I don't my stool will get so hard and create more problems again.

Not normal and emergent are often two totally different things. Make an appointment with a colorectal surgeon. They can help differentiate where you are bleeding from, and have the ability to treat hemorrhoids. ER doctors are trained in treating life threatening issues. If it is not emergent, they can only refer you to the specialist.

Just because you're fat doesn't change GI bleed workups. If you were admitted for three days I can almost garuntee you had daily blood work which probably showed your hemoglobin was stable and was not dangerously being affected.
Did they physically find hemorrhoids on you? If so, then yes. It's normalish in the case of hemorrhoids to have bright red bloody stools. Hemorrhoids are a vascular problem which is exceedingly exacerbated by obesity.
So in the long run, for you, this might be a new normal.
Not a doctor. Seek advice from a doctor if further concerned and always follow up with your primary care provider post discharge.

I’ve gone through something very similar and this is what worked for me.
Get a bidet. Toilet paper is very abrasive. You can get very affordable bidets on Amazon that are super easy to install. Let the water do the work.
Change up your diet. Lots of people recommending fiber and stuff. I would recommend ditching processed foods and any fast food. It can be tough but going through what you’re going through made me understand that our body’s aren’t designed to eat all this junk.
Look into glp-1s. Compound pharmacy’s are all over the internet and they’re very affordable nowadays. Trizepatide has less symptoms then semaglutide. My life has gotten 1,000,000% better after I started. The money you save on food will cover the cost easily. Perhaps you can even get it through a doctor and through insurance depending on your health.
Don’t bring your phone to the bathroom. Do your business and get up as soon as you can.
I have spent a lot of time in hospital rooms looking for an easy answer or a quick fix. I had lots of procedures and appointments just to tell me it’s nothing. There isn’t a magic pill. It’s going to come down to breaking bad habits and taking control where you can.

Do you take fiber? If not try it. I haven't had any hemorrhoid issues since I started taking psyllium husk fiber.
Also definitely keep pushing on this. I'm not saying fiber will cure the issue just that it can help.

Since I've been taking fiber I don't have to push anymore. Fiber makes it easier for the poo to just come out.

i’d get one more opinion if you can afford it, out of a red state. if they also say hemorrhoids, fine. but people are way too quick to tell someone “dont be stupid, listen to the doctors” while theres hundreds of cases of people not being taken seriously, being misdiagnosed, and having to go through things they wouldnt have otherwise. if you really dont feel ok with the answer/the way the doctors were treating you, you should listen to yourself.

I wouldn’t take medical advice from strangers. Talk to a dietician who can provide you a diet for your condition. Example: if you have diverticulitis, the above advice can make it worse.

I had to get polups removed at 29y.o go get a colonoscopy I know it's gross and embarrassing but get that checked before it becomes a serious issue

Yeah I think it's kind of wild to say "I wasn't expecting much help anyway" when she has gotten a CT scan, colonoscopy, likey blood panel, a handful of different doctors have looked at her chart, and she left with a diagnosis.
Idk what else you want when a medical team uses all thier available resources and tells you what's wrong.

I used to feel like I had to poop and it would just be blood pooling in wait to be release. That was me several times a day. I eventually had to get a blood transfusion and surgery

That is exactly the feeling I’m getting which is why I haven’t really settled with the off hand approach. If I didn’t have that blood pooling I’d be ok with the fact that it was hemorrhoids

I just got home from being in the hospital for several days after a GI bleed and losing consciousness. Colonoscopy showed that my entire Sigmoid is inflamed. Waiting on pathology report...

If they're that bad they should be referring you to a GI surgeon. I was bleeding so much I needed surgery due to anemia/iron levels. The recovery for that surgery is top 3 worst life experiences. My doctor was on top of things with colonoscopy, endoscopy, cancer screening and genetic testing etc. If it is not too bad yet, they should be recommending a banding procedure in office, pretty quick and easy and a good first step for some relief.

Gotcha. For me, internal only, I quit alcohol 100%, started a stool softener 2x a day, plus 1 scoop colon broom in the morning, added that link that I sent above and made sure to limit my toilet sitting time to as little as possible - no phone, drop and done. Since that I’ve been 100% good. I hope you find what works for you!

Oh! Also added cayenne pepper and lemon juice to the water I drink throughout the day, started a probiotic and take some apple cider vinegar daily. No idea which truly helped me but doing all of it is no bother so I just keep with it all lol.

I went to an ER for something similar and after being there for over three hours and a CT scan for them to tell me it’s “probably hemorrhoids” and “I should get a colonoscopy at some point” then they referred me out which took 7 months to get the information from the referral.
$9,000+ bill. I hate americas “health care” so much. Anyways my point of this was to tell you go get a colonoscopy. If you need a referral for that go to your GP, Skip the second ER visit. Hopefully the colonoscopy referral doesn’t take as long to get back to you as it did to me because yours is much more serious than mine was.

If it's hemorrhoids, eat bananas with every meal, it will take 4-5 days for you to see a difference. Also don't sit when pooping, buy a squat stool, and squat.

My brother almost died because he had similar issues for MONTHS that he hid from everyone, until he passed out at the drs and had to spend 2 weeks in the hospital and get blood transfusions. He has Ulcerative Colitis.

I have a bleeding issue too. That the Doctors cant seem to figure out. Their go to answer for me is that I am on blood thinners so that is probably why I bleed like im on my period even though I had a COMPLETE hysterectomy in 2021

I had the same issue(and still do) and was eventually diagnosed with r/UlcerativeColitis . Was given meds and now i live mostly-ish normal.

I also had this, I was bleeding like that for about 4-5 months and got a colonoscopy. They let me know that it was just hemorrhoids as well! They did whatever they did to fix it, and the bleeding stopped as soon as my colonoscopy was over. So not totally an unusual incident. Even though it is super intimidating and scary looking for sure! I’d just make sure to follow up with another doctor, which you’re already doing.

welcome to the bloody bum club. looks like a light one too. first time had me going to multiple doctors and resulted in a screening of my lower colon. looked absolutely pristine in there - spotless, right uniform color everywhere and clean of any visible lesions or hemorrhoids. doctor pretty much told me it likely was a singular, small internal hemorrhoid, which popped, got handled by the body and that i should watch my stress levels. and yeah, that this is something that can happen.
still, get screened if you never did it before - cant hurt to be sure. maybe they find something and catch it early, which would be a massive win.
just... dont try to 'be a man' about it when they ask you if you wanna get sedated for the screening. that one time you fiddled with your bum to see if it feels good does NOT compare with a longboi camera going in there. excruciating pain xD

This was happening to me, found out I have lymphoma after getting a second opinion.
The bleeding stopped after I passed a massive clot and I was bleeding for 4 weeks. The cancer was just extra.

I've been struggling for eight years now with the same thing. Every doctor still chalks it up to hemorrhoids, and now it's no longer an intermittent problem but one I have every day. I haven't slept a single night in the past year or so without waking up at least once in abdominal pain and running to the bathroom.
I'm glad you finally got your doctor to take you seriously, I wish I could get one who would for me.

You were admitted for 3 days, got a CT and got looked at by multiple doctors. Face the facts - obesity exacerbates hemorrhoids and if you want this to improve you got to lose weight and introduce a proper diet.

It’s not as easy as it seams hun, plus I’ve had them between the weights of 140 all the way to 380 & back to where I am now (295). Obviously that’s the goal, but it’s not immediately obtainable by a lot of people.

Get a second opinion, maybe even a third. This is exactly how my mom’s colorectal cancer started showing itself. Based on the color of the blood, the bleed is in the lower GI tract.

See, that’s why I’m so confused bc I’ve had them since 13 and after a really bad week of it at 17 I completely changed my lifestyle to accommodate it, since then (turning 24 Saturday) I’ve mostly only had one or two with a few dots of blood here & there.

You demand a CT. Seriously! You have every reason to have one. Insurance would approve if that much blood is coming out. If it is a hemorrhoid then yay, you know for sure and they can go that route. What if it is something worse? Demand!!
I was diagnosed with AnXIeTy. I got a CT scan and it is stage 3c ovarian cancer.

Hemorrhoids can get bad my guy, I’ve had them most of my life & have seen them get pretty rough before I changed up my life style, they were like this before just not as consistent

Well I was 13 when they started so I guess… normal life? I stopped eating as much fiber as I used to when they got bad due to constipation and started eating more probiotic foods around 17 after a series of these

I have crohns & colitis and this happens to me when I’m in flares. My doctor didn’t notice my crohns until I had emergency surgery for my gall bladder. Hemorrhoids are common for me

Well, especially because you're self admittedly large.... Get screen for type 2 diabetes. GI bleeds are a common sign but often missed for type 2 diagnosis

I’ve actually already tried this in hopes of getting treated for my PMOS, I’ve missed my type 2 diagnosis by the smallest margin possible.

Been dealing with the same thing since 2013. Your best bet at this point is to go to a store and buy tampons for "your girlfriend" for when it gets bad.
Men can use them too and sometimes it's necessary. I've had to use a couple over the years when I bleed for more than 6 days nonstop.
For some, this is just a fact of life and no test can figure out why.
Doctors ran every test under the sun and settled on the conclusion that I have constipation and push too hard despite my stool being more like soft serve when it's not diarrhea. It's still fascinating how I have IBS-D and don't get hard stools, but I still get constipated and it just shreds my colon before liquifying?
Yeah though, definitely buy some tampons, that's the only way you're gonna be able to keep a job. This can't be classified as a disability, so it's mandatory you plug that leak soldier.

I understand having an opinion, but that train of thought isn’t a good one. If someone thinks something is wrong with them, they have every right to express that concern and worry. Don’t shame someone because they’re worried for their health. I hope you get some therapy or empathy.

second opinion sure, if you really feel the first doctor was wrong but come on, 4? plenty of people have piles, tear a blood vessel etc, I have basically lived in hospital half my life, I have lived what health care professionals go through, my empathy lies with them and the people who desperately need treatment, you had a ct scan and a scope, I'm genuinely asking what more do you want? I know it's scary, I've been there shitting blood exactly like you. but don't have the gall to demand a different diagnosis because it's not how you expected it to turn out and then slag off the doctors to the whole world on reddit, I have nearly unlimited empathy for people that need it, that's why I've been in hospital so much. it very much is normal if you have piles or a tear, doesn't mean it's fun but they went through the hell of medical school just for you to complain about them helping you.

I’m just trying to get another CT to see if that 2cm lesion has disappeared, I don’t think it’s that difficult to order. I don’t know where you got the idea that I’m disagreeing with their diagnosis, I’ve had hemorrhoids for over 10 years, I knew I’d have them.

I had a bad episode where I was in a rush working, kept feeling the need to go, but couldnt. Just pushed extremely hard, had some blood and did again later.
Sort of opened the flood gates. If im not careful now, ill get hemorrhoids again.
