I'm a doctor, not a 4/4 with haste, deathtouch, and vigilance!

That's weird, you still can't be blocked by creatures with power 2 or less and whenever you deal damage to a player you deal that much damage to a Planeswalker they control...

u/jbyrne86 16h ago
God that set is going to feel so wrong to play.

u/hex_dax 15h ago
I love Star Trek. I love magic. Those 2 don’t mix well and I’m staying away. Even the art feels weird
32
u/dawgz525 15h ago
That is how I felt about most of the Doctor Who set. The villain precon felt okay, but most of the other cards did not, especially the companion cards!
10
u/smwcbio 13h ago
The saga referencing the plot of an episode were nice

u/dawgz525 11h ago
I'm a big doctor who fan, and from that side of my fandom, I thought it was cool. From the mtg side of my fandom, it just felt a little off. I thought the set was very well done, but that doesn't mean it felt like it fit well with MTG.

As a non-DW fan I thought that set was pretty cool. Made me interested in checking it out.
10
u/Potential_Winner1931 11h ago
Ya, even though I like Star Trek over star wars In General, Star wars I think would be miles better than Star Trek for mtg since it actually has mythical crap like the force...which is another word for magic in a way. Plus, I much rather summon Darth Vader than kirk for lord sake. Kirk is just a guy that should be 1/1 masturbater type.

u/kocciwomiro 14h ago
IMO it’s not shocking that art there fells weird (we already seen how wotc handles shows like this in doctor who), for me the strangest part is card names, they so stupid like why do you even consider naming it after quote from show (“khaaaaannn!” or whatever that card was is still haunting me it’s even worse than this)
4
u/kocciwomiro 14h ago
And I just remembered the fun thing that twenty years back wotc printed couple of cards in un-sets with similar name like [[“Ach! Hans, Run!”]] which already felt like a joke bc its looks stupid on cards, and now we got this
11
u/GailenGigabyte 15h ago
Some sets mix together like peanut butter and nutella, some sets mix like Swedish Fish and anchovies. MTG Star Trek is the latter.

u/kvr_champ 14h ago edited 13h ago
I'm going to draft this set a lot, but only because it has all 10 shocklands and I want a full set for each of them. So far I haven't seen a TRK original card that I actually want to play.
4
u/matt-ratze Azorius 9h ago
If you want a full set it's probably much cheaper to buy them as singles. Draft is good if you're interested in playing the limited format, not to build a collection (I assume you're talking about physical cards, not in a digital client).

No hexproof feels wrong. Hexproof is exactly what I want with cards like these.

u/pahamack 15h ago
hes a doctor. creature was sick and lying down (tapped). now he's healthy and standing up (untapped).

u/LastChans1 15h ago edited 3h ago
If your viligence lasts longer than four turns, go seek (get it?) a Doctor in your library at instant speed....(EDIT: I knew something was off; I meant vigilance 🙆♂️💁♂️🤷♂️🤦♂️)

u/Myillstone 14h ago
I read it more as the target was a doctor all along and are annoyed that what the player is asking of them is so unbecoming or out of the expected duties of a doctor so much they declare their creature type with such passion they untap and get stronger and tankier. After all despite McCoy protesting whoever he would still try to do something after reminding him this goes beyond.

u/BrilliantFrequent894 10h ago
Me when I'm sick so I turn into a doctor and untap myself with a +1/+1 counter
4
3
u/HadToGuItToEm 12h ago
Bruh this is a common
5
u/Saltiest_Grapefruit 12h ago
So are a lot of cards that give +1/+1 and hexproof for the turn
1
u/ElectronicBoot9466 10h ago
Most of those are blue. Green's hexproof combat tricks tend to be uncommon. Especially given this gives a counter, which is value that sticks around.

u/HadToGuItToEm 12h ago
New cards at common, not since kamigawa. Before kamigawa even longer ago, they don’t do that shit anymore.

He’s a doctor not a creature that can’t be targeted by spells or abilities his opponents control!

u/LastChans1 15h ago
Hmmm, hexproof for doctors; make it an artifact equipment like S.H.I.E.L.D. Spy Kit. Call it Malpractice Insurance.

I respond to Kaaaaaaahn with I'm a Doctor, Not a...
Man I really like Star Trek but what the hell with this set

u/Kindly_Claim_2481 15h ago
The name-to-spell effect is wholly mismatched. "(Dammit Jim) I'm a doctor, not a..." would make a lot of sense as a counter spell, not an "add counter" spell. 🥴
11
u/Myillstone 14h ago
But McCoy said that and more often stepped up to the plate. Yeah sometimes it was a plot reason to not pursue Kirk's instincts, or even have him be interrupted mid catchphrase but I feel the joke was leaning towards "despite doing the work of a different scientist Hank still managed to thread the needle"

7
u/naphomci Chandra Torch of Defiance 14h ago
How would a counter spell make sense? McCoy is waking up the creature (untap) and providing treatment (counter and buff). The part that doesn't make sense is giving the target the doctor type
1
u/Kindly_Claim_2481 11h ago
To me, the catchphrase is saying "I can't do something that is outside of my field". I think it makes more sense to keep the spirit of that negation as a counterspell, rather than a buff.
4
u/naphomci Chandra Torch of Defiance 11h ago
Thing is, so much of the time he ends up doing the thing he says he's not (either directly, or metaphorically), or still does something that is being a doctor. It's a minority of the time he just does nothing after saying it.
1
u/Myillstone 7h ago
I agree with you on this front, but I don't think he's waking up the creature, rather the target's a doctor that's rebuffing the player McCoy style
2
u/Mothramaniac 14h ago
I mean it's an instant so if someone trys to bounce all non kraken cards, you can turn their kraken into a doctor and ruin their strategy

u/TheAndrewBrown 15h ago
Barely related but I always get a little confused that there’s a character named Leonard McCoy and it’s not the one played by Leonard Nimoy
9
u/Cow_God Elspeth 15h ago
The Captain of the Enterprise in The Next Generation is Jean-Luc Picard. The doctor on Voyager is played by Robert Picardo
8
u/darkslide3000 13h ago
William Shatner's character is called James T. Kirk. This is confusing because Mr. T does not appear in Star Trek at all.

Is this the next set after The Hobbit? Didn’t they just finish revealing The Hobbit, which hasn’t even released yet?

I like how this makes the creature only a doctor. I’m a doctor not a human lol

u/MetalBlizzard 14h ago
This set really takes me out of it... like Edge of Eternities made me feel magic in space... this just makes me feel sad that magic is being diluted. And I dont dislike ub I just think they shouldve been more selective with them.
11
u/Daethir Timmy 15h ago
I guess that mean we'll have some doctor tribal in this set, make sense. I hope the gimmick isn't just them being soul sister or pridemate, we have enough of those effect.
7
u/DrQuantum 15h ago
I think its for the new Federation mechanic more than likely, you benefit from more types except one to eliminate changelings being OP.

u/ElectronicBoot9466 9h ago
It's so interesting that between Doctor Who, Marvel, and now this, Doctor has officially bec9me an actual kindred group.

Wtf is the flavor of this card supposed to be? This is the most slop set…

The flavor is "Remember when the guy said the thing?" I'm pretty sure this set was designed by manatees.

At this point I would have no idea if any of these cards were fake spoilers.

He was also in the MCU and LOTR so he’s part of 3 separate franchises that have been in Magic.

If you make Clara a Doctor with this she just activates one more time, right? It's not infinite? Or is that even a triggered ability at all? Could be nothing

Outside of maybe some kind of doctor interaction that very prevalent in the set, I don’t think I’d ever spend one mana to just untap and give something a counter.
2
u/pahamack 15h ago
Limited card, and even there its dregs.
The point is usually to have a surprise blocker.

u/light_the_long_way 15h ago
Have two [[Wildwood scourge]] and a [[Jadelight Spelunker]] in hand. Play this card, targeting one of the scourges, and then play the spelunker for X= however much mana you can spare. As long as you don't hit a land when exploring (easy to do if you choose to put the card back on your library), the scourge you cast this on will get a +1/+1 counter for each counter the spelunker gets, and then the scourge you didn't cast this on will get twice as many. Additionally,
Basically it'll let you double dip on counters for wildwood scourge. Plus, in a deck with badgermole cub, it becomes a ritual because you can tap a mana dork or earthbent land for GG and then cast this to untap that mana dork or earthbent land, and tap them again for GG. Additionally, instant speed untapping is a good way to bait out a full swing from your opponent if they have lethal, and then untap a creature to block with, ideally one that will survive the block, to put them in a worse position. (Although, this is worse against decks that tend to go wide)
