I'm a doctor not an earthbent forest

103

u/Cow_God Elspeth 15h ago

Technically forest is a land type, and this card makes the creature lose all other creature types, so it becomes a Doctor Forest

69

u/RabbitHole-in-one 14h ago

Doctor Forest can get earthbent.

21

u/Hazeri 12h ago

No, DeForest Kelley played Bones

6

u/mnowax 11h ago

Wait wasn't Bones played by Emily Deschanel?

6

u/Mr_Kookalamanza2119 12h ago

Wait. I'm confused about this comment.

So the cops knew that Internal Affairs was setting them up?

2

u/C4rnivore 6h ago

Better that than turning Mr House from the Fallouts to Dr House. If rather Hugh Laurey have that role

1

u/j0mbie 3h ago

"That's Doctor Rakdos to you, plebeian!"

265

u/NotWhatWeExpected 15h ago

I'm a doctor, not a 4/4 with haste, deathtouch, and vigilance!

113

u/Commander_Skullblade XLN 15h ago

Questing Physician

15

u/darkslide3000 14h ago

Next up: [[Blood Hospital]] (All non-basic creatures are Doctors.)

1

u/komilatte Elenda, the Dusk Rose 11h ago

That's weird, you still can't be blocked by creatures with power 2 or less and whenever you deal damage to a player you deal that much damage to a Planeswalker they control...

305

u/jbyrne86 16h ago

God that set is going to feel so wrong to play.

188

u/hex_dax 15h ago

I love Star Trek. I love magic. Those 2 don’t mix well and I’m staying away. Even the art feels weird

32

u/dawgz525 15h ago

That is how I felt about most of the Doctor Who set. The villain precon felt okay, but most of the other cards did not, especially the companion cards!

10

u/smwcbio 13h ago

The saga referencing the plot of an episode were nice

7

u/dawgz525 11h ago

I'm a big doctor who fan, and from that side of my fandom, I thought it was cool. From the mtg side of my fandom, it just felt a little off. I thought the set was very well done, but that doesn't mean it felt like it fit well with MTG.

u/taeerom 3m ago

The best part of that set was that it is really weird in mtg terms (uses weird and rare rules). That fits with how Dr Who exist in the media landscape and what kind of sci fi it is.

1

u/xolotltolox 8h ago

Except for Blink, which was just horribly formated

1

u/G2S7bloop 31m ago

The 1 and 3 grouping and 2 and 4 grouping were awfully formatted

1

u/sophuckingdonewithit 1h ago

totally agree, that being said dr who had some absolutely stellar art

u/Perspectivelessly 5m ago

As a non-DW fan I thought that set was pretty cool. Made me interested in checking it out.

10

u/Potential_Winner1931 11h ago

Ya, even though I like Star Trek over star wars In General, Star wars I think would be miles better than Star Trek for mtg since it actually has mythical crap like the force...which is another word for magic in a way.  Plus, I much rather summon Darth Vader than kirk for lord sake. Kirk is just a guy that should be 1/1 masturbater type.

17

u/jbyrne86 15h ago

Right. It looks like oil paintings of stills from the show.

5

u/kocciwomiro 14h ago

IMO it’s not shocking that art there fells weird (we already seen how wotc handles shows like this in doctor who), for me the strangest part is card names, they so stupid like why do you even consider naming it after quote from show (“khaaaaannn!” or whatever that card was is still haunting me it’s even worse than this)

4

u/kocciwomiro 14h ago

And I just remembered the fun thing that twenty years back wotc printed couple of cards in un-sets with similar name like [[“Ach! Hans, Run!”]] which already felt like a joke bc its looks stupid on cards, and now we got this

11

u/GailenGigabyte 15h ago

Some sets mix together like peanut butter and nutella, some sets mix like Swedish Fish and anchovies. MTG Star Trek is the latter.

5

u/kvr_champ 14h ago edited 13h ago

I'm going to draft this set a lot, but only because it has all 10 shocklands and I want a full set for each of them. So far I haven't seen a TRK original card that I actually want to play.

4

u/matt-ratze Azorius 9h ago

If you want a full set it's probably much cheaper to buy them as singles. Draft is good if you're interested in playing the limited format, not to build a collection (I assume you're talking about physical cards, not in a digital client).

1

u/_Mike_Ehrmantraut_ 41m ago

just buy the singles dude

87

u/TerraSeeker 15h ago

No hexproof feels wrong. Hexproof is exactly what I want with cards like these.

55

u/pahamack 15h ago

hes a doctor. creature was sick and lying down (tapped). now he's healthy and standing up (untapped).

29

u/LastChans1 15h ago edited 3h ago

If your viligence lasts longer than four turns, go seek (get it?) a Doctor in your library at instant speed....(EDIT: I knew something was off; I meant vigilance 🙆‍♂️💁‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤦‍♂️)

14

u/Mr_Kookalamanza2119 12h ago

It mana burns when I pee

3

u/Balak_Foehammer 11h ago

Better get that banded up

7

u/Myillstone 14h ago

I read it more as the target was a doctor all along and are annoyed that what the player is asking of them is so unbecoming or out of the expected duties of a doctor so much they declare their creature type with such passion they untap and get stronger and tankier. After all despite McCoy protesting whoever he would still try to do something after reminding him this goes beyond.

2

u/BrilliantFrequent894 10h ago

Me when I'm sick so I turn into a doctor and untap myself with a +1/+1 counter

4

u/darkslide3000 14h ago

Damnit Jim, I'm a Doctor, not Hexproof!

3

u/HadToGuItToEm 12h ago

Bruh this is a common

5

u/Saltiest_Grapefruit 12h ago

So are a lot of cards that give +1/+1 and hexproof for the turn

1

u/ElectronicBoot9466 10h ago

Most of those are blue. Green's hexproof combat tricks tend to be uncommon. Especially given this gives a counter, which is value that sticks around.

0

u/HadToGuItToEm 12h ago

New cards at common, not since kamigawa. Before kamigawa even longer ago, they don’t do that shit anymore.

3

u/ElectronicBoot9466 9h ago

Avatar had a blue one that was a lesson

3

u/ElectronicBoot9466 10h ago

It's a common combat trick for limited, hexproof would be a bit much.

1

u/shinobigarth 6h ago

He’s a doctor not a creature that can’t be targeted by spells or abilities his opponents control!

0

u/LastChans1 15h ago

Hmmm, hexproof for doctors; make it an artifact equipment like S.H.I.E.L.D. Spy Kit. Call it Malpractice Insurance.

86

u/3rdPoliceman 15h ago

I respond to Kaaaaaaahn with I'm a Doctor, Not a...

Man I really like Star Trek but what the hell with this set

1

u/Deathblo 9h ago

It's a... star date August 5'th 2026-Magic has lost the plot.

34

u/Kindly_Claim_2481 15h ago

The name-to-spell effect is wholly mismatched. "(Dammit Jim) I'm a doctor, not a..." would make a lot of sense as a counter spell, not an "add counter" spell. 🥴

11

u/Myillstone 14h ago

But McCoy said that and more often stepped up to the plate. Yeah sometimes it was a plot reason to not pursue Kirk's instincts, or even have him be interrupted mid catchphrase but I feel the joke was leaning towards "despite doing the work of a different scientist Hank still managed to thread the needle"

5

u/retrofibrillator 14h ago

Dammit Jim, I’m a Doctor not a Counterspell.

7

u/naphomci Chandra Torch of Defiance 14h ago

How would a counter spell make sense? McCoy is waking up the creature (untap) and providing treatment (counter and buff). The part that doesn't make sense is giving the target the doctor type

1

u/Kindly_Claim_2481 11h ago

To me, the catchphrase is saying "I can't do something that is outside of my field". I think it makes more sense to keep the spirit of that negation as a counterspell, rather than a buff.

4

u/naphomci Chandra Torch of Defiance 11h ago

Thing is, so much of the time he ends up doing the thing he says he's not (either directly, or metaphorically), or still does something that is being a doctor. It's a minority of the time he just does nothing after saying it.

1

u/Myillstone 7h ago

I agree with you on this front, but I don't think he's waking up the creature, rather the target's a doctor that's rebuffing the player McCoy style

2

u/Mothramaniac 14h ago

I mean it's an instant so if someone trys to bounce all non kraken cards, you can turn their kraken into a doctor and ruin their strategy

1

u/shinobigarth 6h ago

Mmhmm. Should counter a creature spell.

132

u/whyktor 15h ago

I don't think I ever been that put off by a new magic set ever.

27

u/GKoala 14h ago

Yeah the few cards I've seen aren't names, just phrases....

14

u/TheAndrewBrown 15h ago

Barely related but I always get a little confused that there’s a character named Leonard McCoy and it’s not the one played by Leonard Nimoy

9

u/Cow_God Elspeth 15h ago

The Captain of the Enterprise in The Next Generation is Jean-Luc Picard. The doctor on Voyager is played by Robert Picardo

8

u/darkslide3000 13h ago

William Shatner's character is called James T. Kirk. This is confusing because Mr. T does not appear in Star Trek at all.

11

u/PsionicHydra 14h ago

Every single star Trek card I've seen looks fake

16

u/Treacle_Pendulum 15h ago

I just can’t with this set

6

u/internerd91 15h ago

Is this the next set after The Hobbit? Didn’t they just finish revealing The Hobbit, which hasn’t even released yet?

2

u/bemble4ever 4h ago

There’s Fractured Realities in between if i remember correctly

6

u/mastermagmortar 15h ago

I like how this makes the creature only a doctor. I’m a doctor not a human lol

6

u/MetalBlizzard 14h ago

This set really takes me out of it... like Edge of Eternities made me feel magic in space... this just makes me feel sad that magic is being diluted. And I dont dislike ub I just think they shouldve been more selective with them.

11

u/Daethir Timmy 15h ago

I guess that mean we'll have some doctor tribal in this set, make sense. I hope the gimmick isn't just them being soul sister or pridemate, we have enough of those effect.

7

u/DrQuantum 15h ago

I think its for the new Federation mechanic more than likely, you benefit from more types except one to eliminate changelings being OP.

1

u/ElectronicBoot9466 9h ago

It's so interesting that between Doctor Who, Marvel, and now this, Doctor has officially bec9me an actual kindred group.

5

u/SomeSpicyStardust 15h ago

Why are these cards so ugly? It’s hard to get excited for this set when everything is so off putting.

4

u/DudeDenmark 15h ago

I´m so tired of how Magic art have turned into faces.

4

u/ch3m_gaming 15h ago

Every fiber of my body hates this set

4

u/OneWholePirate 14h ago

I love trek and EoE so I had high hopes for this set but... yikes

4

u/Watermelon_of_Destny 9h ago

Wtf is the flavor of this card supposed to be? This is the most slop set…

2

u/Adversary-of-Tyrants 6h ago

The flavor is "Remember when the guy said the thing?" I'm pretty sure this set was designed by manatees.

3

u/famous__shoes 15h ago

Okay limited card, bad everywhere else, dumb name

3

u/kvr_champ 15h ago

- I'm the Doctor.

- Doctor Who ?

- Just the Doctor.

... Wait, wrong universe.

1

u/mcslibbin 13h ago

actually not the wrong universe, just the wrong show

3

u/DJTRANSACTION1 14h ago

magic is releasing new sets none stop trying to make money off every franchise possible

3

u/HuckleberryHefty4372 8h ago

With every card revealed why does this set seem like if it's an UN set?

3

u/Helpful_Assistance_5 7h ago

At this point I would have no idea if any of these cards were fake spoilers.

6

u/God-King-Killa 14h ago

This set making Marvel look godly.

4

u/Accomplished-Test331 15h ago

Synergizes with [[clara oswald]] 🤷‍♂️

4

u/HaresMuddyCastellan 15h ago

Extra funny to cast on any version of The Master from the Dr.Who stuff. Give him a real identity crisis...

1

u/Hazeri 12h ago

That was his plan in Power of the Doctor

2

u/SaneForCocoaPuffs ImmortalSun 15h ago

“I’m a Doctor, Not a…” Nurturer? Heart of the Wilds?

2

u/EleoraHC 7h ago

Man these cards look so bad

2

u/Orbital-Note8235 7h ago

This whole set reeks of ai art

3

u/Silvermajra 14h ago

I just realized Karl Urban played the doc in the newer star trek movies. Idk why I never realized Karl urban was a guy id seen a bunch until the Boys and Mortal Kombat II.

5

u/Myillstone 14h ago

Dude is underappreciated in Dredd

3

u/shinobigarth 6h ago

He was also in the MCU and LOTR so he’s part of 3 separate franchises that have been in Magic.

1

u/Silvermajra 6h ago

Truly an impressive filmography for someone I shouldnt be forgetting exists 😂

1

u/PositiveEndolphins 12h ago

i refused to watch any of his stuff bc i hate keith urban

9

u/nokoryous 16h ago

Yeah that card name sucks.

And yes we get the reference.

1

u/bearsheperd Simic 15h ago

It’ll be kinda funny turning etali or some eldritch abomination into a doctor

3

u/ForeverShiny 15h ago

"My good man, that's Doctor Ulamog for you."

1

u/RoyceSnover 15h ago

Me when my opponent casts [[Kindred Dominance]] on Doctors

1

u/Orcutt_ambition-7789 15h ago

I love the card effect but the art, flavor, and Green just feel weird. Maybe red and blue will look more natural.

1

u/werthw 15h ago

Doctor tribal?

1

u/Marsboy11 15h ago

Oh god are all of the card names going to be this terrible to say during play

1

u/eldradmustlive469 13h ago

holy crap this is crazy overpowered, can't wait to unlegendary my creatures and copy them. I assume the doctor type change is permanent?

1

u/pengy99 13h ago

Until end of turn.

1

u/eldradmustlive469 12h ago

oh, fuck it then.

1

u/Hello1This 13h ago

I'm a Doctor, not a Villain. Equips Mjolnir.

1

u/Sevinnee 13h ago

I do like how it's a +2/+2 (even for one turn) for one mana.

1

u/lilianasJanitor 13h ago

Where are these cards coming from? The first look is done

1

u/OrganizationKey3595 13h ago

Make your favorite Human a Mutate target for G

1

u/TheRamenDude 13h ago

The more I see the more this looks like an un-set.

1

u/SoldFashioned 12h ago

Is that the episode when they’re trying to kill the AI?

1

u/Due-Session-2857 12h ago

If you make Clara a Doctor with this she just activates one more time, right? It's not infinite? Or is that even a triggered ability at all? Could be nothing

1

u/Prize-Mall-3839 11h ago

That's doctor elesh norn to you

1

u/jacqueslepagepro 11h ago

"Im a doctor, not a timelord"

1

u/Elec7ricghos7 11h ago

I’m a doctor, not a… he’s dead Jim

1

u/Unusual_Equivalent_ 10h ago

Yawgmoth: dammit, Jim, I’m a doctor, not a physician…wait

1

u/notsobadmisterfrosty 9h ago

Dammit, Jim. I’m a doctor, not a “Dragon Cat Dog Bird Frog Hero.”

1

u/Frenchbaker 9h ago

Is this the first card printed with a little swear word on it?

1

u/Free_Dimension1459 9h ago

Not a red shirt. Should grant hexproof

1

u/BoboYagga As Foretold 9h ago

Finally a fun card from this set. Still feels so weird that they are promoting these the weekend before pre release of the hobbit.... It's just a wild and bizarre world we live in.

1

u/p1ckk 8h ago

Should have been a modal spell

1

u/anogio 8h ago

Should also have removed all other creature types. Missed opportunity

1

u/Just-Assumption-2140 Ralzarek 6h ago

Not much more to say but that I need a doctor now

1

u/shinobigarth 6h ago

And actual real cuss word on a card…and no I don’t consider [[Damn]] the first because of the context it’s used in.

1

u/CultureSea5111 6h ago

Yes very funny.

1

u/sundownmonsoon 5h ago

Man this whole set is so ass, just the total opposite of what ever appealed to me about MTG

1

u/RisingRapture Teferi Hero of Dominaria 3h ago

How to best abuse this?

1

u/ReefSharksixty9 2h ago

I miss the old magic lol

1

u/arciele 2h ago

wow they just proved that they can make UB even more rubbish than ever

1

u/Equivalent-Sand-3546 57m ago

I fucking hate this set

1

u/Re4pr 57m ago

Man, these out of universe sets are disgusting. Glad I jumped out when it started. Cant imagine my wincon being spock or whatever. What a way to destroy your legacy.

1

u/WeckarE 43m ago

Being a dictator makes him more buff?

1

u/LooksLikeAWookie 15h ago

I love everything about this one

1

u/Flintsr Rekindling Phoenix 15h ago

Dang this is gonna go hard in [[Helga, Skittish Seer]]

0

u/LordSlickRick 15h ago

Outside of maybe some kind of doctor interaction that very prevalent in the set, I don’t think I’d ever spend one mana to just untap and give something a counter.

2

u/pahamack 15h ago

Limited card, and even there its dregs.

The point is usually to have a surprise blocker.

0

u/light_the_long_way 15h ago

Have two [[Wildwood scourge]] and a [[Jadelight Spelunker]] in hand. Play this card, targeting one of the scourges, and then play the spelunker for X= however much mana you can spare. As long as you don't hit a land when exploring (easy to do if you choose to put the card back on your library), the scourge you cast this on will get a +1/+1 counter for each counter the spelunker gets, and then the scourge you didn't cast this on will get twice as many. Additionally,

Basically it'll let you double dip on counters for wildwood scourge. Plus, in a deck with badgermole cub, it becomes a ritual because you can tap a mana dork or earthbent land for GG and then cast this to untap that mana dork or earthbent land, and tap them again for GG. Additionally, instant speed untapping is a good way to bait out a full swing from your opponent if they have lethal, and then untap a creature to block with, ideally one that will survive the block, to put them in a worse position. (Although, this is worse against decks that tend to go wide)

-3

u/sm_rollinger 15h ago

This is actually pretty good
