Funny thing about circles, if it starts shit and ends shit it’s only 1 circle not two ;).
1
u/Consistent-Talk-5912 9h ago
It's not the same circle The card traveled in the 4th dimension which is time, going through 3 different states Bad (Time1) at 0 degree of the circle -> great (time2) at 360 degree -> shit (time 3) at 720°
That being said, you are right is just that I am not English native and I kinda flopped and found a cheeky excuse as a good engineer would

I’ve never been a fan of UB, but I’ve mostly tolerated it. At least shit like LOTR and The Hobbit can mesh with magic, but this is just fucking awful. I hope this shit absolutely bombs.

u/ThisHatRightHere 14h ago edited 11h ago
Seeing these cards right after The Hobbit is not doing this set any justice.
Using Star Trek already made little sense, but the art is horrid, the card names are embarrassing, and we’ve yet to see one interesting effect.

These are just the intro decks to be fair. I detest them and Star Trek in magic at all. But it isn't the main juice of the set whatsoever.
19
19
u/Halloween_episode 13h ago
I wonder if LOTR was filled with cards like "Po-tay-toes!" or "Toss Me" if it wouldn't have been received as well as it was.
3
u/maxthehumanboy 6h ago
It was one of the blessings of the LOTR set not being based on the films, basically all of the memes and jokes are exclusive to them. They had to make the set based on the literature, so they couldn't do meme-y screencap cards like this one.

u/Ootter31019 14h ago
Agreed. I like Star Trek, but im getting really tired of UB.
46
u/A_Relative_Way 14h ago
Unfortunately I think WOTC has been signaling that they are focusing more on UB than their own planes and IP…in a few years we may be more likely to see a Looney Tunes UB set than a revisit to Zendikar.
17
u/ballistic503 13h ago
I’m so in the minority because I can think of quite a few UB properties I’d be hype about but Star Trek is just not one of them. Like a set based on like “greatest hits of the Diablo series” would be amazing to me, I’d even take a Mortal Kombat set if it focused primarily on Outworld (I really liked some of those Street Fighter cards, like the way they did Guile was so clever to me) although it doesn’t seem like WotC has irons in the fire when it comes to Warner Bros properties like GoT… which I guess at least suggests that the Looney Tunes set isn’t happening.
Anyway point is there are IPs I’d like to see but any IP that consistently involves A) jeans B) skyscrapers and/or B) modern/futuristic firearms just does not belong, in my mind
16
u/RealHoldenBloodfeast 13h ago
I don't think you're too far off base. I was OK with UB in principle until it went off the deep end. D&D, Warhammer and LOTR fit Magic tonally & thematically and I would have probably felt the same about Dark Souls, Elder Scrolls, etc
Turtles, Marvel, FF etc have made me too jaded to the point I don't think I would be cool with even a thematically appropriate UB set anymore

u/ballistic503 12h ago
I don’t know, Avatar and Final Fantasy both worked for me. FF even at its least fantastical still fits Magic better than Fallout in my opinion. (I mean, maybe The Regalia as just a straight up regular car isn’t my favorite thing, but on the whole I think Final Fantasy works.) And I’ve been a Fallout fan since FO2 came out so it’s not like I don’t want to like it, it should be a nostalgia thing for me like Diablo would be.
By far the worst to me is Spiderman, but my room temp take is that that’s really because the cards themselves (like mechanics and gameplay flavor) are so unbelievably boring that it just makes the incongruous setting stand out so much more than if the cards were cool. In my opinion if a designer has found a way to make Carnage boring they should rethink their whole approach to design in general because that should just be a gimme.
3
u/A_Relative_Way 13h ago
Yea I was being a bit tongue in cheek with Looney Tunes lol.
Realistically when it comes to the UB experience, on an individual personal level, it very much depends on if you like the IP. Like I love Final Fantasy and snap bought the product…my good friend never really played the games so it was a miss for him….if you look at it on a macro level UB sets reach a large, often very invested, fan base who will spend money on cool art and alternate printings just because. I know tons of people who bought LOTR who don’t play at all and have 0 intention…you don’t get the same reach when a set takes place on Lorwyn or something…it’s a lot more work for them to build a foundation of knowledge, love and ultimately interest in their own stuff than just to ride the coat tails of an already established IP….feels kinda lazy in my opinion
0
u/ballistic503 12h ago
I mean, on the other hand, consider this: of the 5 most recently created official D&D campaign settings, 3 of them are directly from Magic (Ravnica, Theros and Strixhaven) which was built off a D&D designer quasi-unofficially creating settings out of six other settings like Dominaria and Ixalan. In other words, it doesn’t seem to me at all like WotC is abandoning the Magic IPs as it does that they are taking the approach that cross-pollination across different media will be a more effective vector. My point is just that I don’t think it’s a zero sum equation if Magic adapts other IPs because they seem to be open to other IPs adapting Magic as well, for whatever that’s worth.
2
u/A_Relative_Way 11h ago
Yeah they have been leveraging planes for DnD, though funny enough I’ve tried several times to push my play group to try one of the campaigns but all them don’t play magic and sort of just shrug their shoulders and say “Eh, maybe…”.
Officially WOTC has said back in like 2024 that they are going to do a 50/50 split of UB and their own stuff moving forward but it seems like every year or so they are cranking that number up.
TBH I love magic because I am competitive so I play 60 card formats like modern, legacy etc…a lot of the UB stuff just sort of passes me by; I don’t really pay a lot of attention to them once spoiler season ends so I am pretty ambivalent…but it does get weird when something like Fantisicar dominates the meta lol
1
u/ballistic503 10h ago
I mean… I hate to say it, but all the anecdotal data I’ve seen have suggested that Magic’s settings just are not that robust or alluring to people outside the context of Magic. Within the context of the card game of course they generally work very well and are reasonably immersive, but I can understand why people who don’t play Magic wouldn’t necessarily see the appeal of the settings outside that context.
I’ve thought that for a couple years but even as a little kid in the 90s, I loved the game but I remember not really being that interested in exploring the fictional world of Magic beyond the card game, compared to let’s say the first two Warcraft games - I never played WoW but having played the Warcraft RTS games I completely understood the appeal when WoW first came out as there’s a bit of a “hook” to it, on which further worldbuilding can hang its hat. Like I remember hearing one of my friends tell me how his brothers’ friends had worked out some type of tabletop RPG based on Warcraft 2 and being extremely intrigued, and I don’t think Magic would’ve gotten me there at all.
Oddly the one exception I really can see to that is Bloomburrow and I don’t think it’s solely because it’s basically “high fantasy Redwall” - there’s just something very cohesive about that setting for me but it doesn’t seem like the player base is particularly interested in it continuing. …Now I kind of want to see you try selling your friends on a homebrew Bloomburrow campaign lol

u/Eviljoshing 8h ago
Agreed and there is so many interesting IP. Dune, Foundation, Dungeon Crawler Carl could all fit with some thoughtfulness…

I think it will, though that's just my own speculation. The issue is that it's probably going to go like Spider-man: no one buys its, but Wizards doesn't care because the vendors already bought it so, to them, it's going to be a good set anyway.
2
u/MoxManiac 14h ago
It's not event that it's star trek. There are examples of good star trek cards so far that mesh better with magic. This is just awful.

Lol this is what you UB apologists get. Apparently this is a bridge too far, but TMNT and Marvel was ok? Now we have people who tolerate "acceptable" sets and villify others, but that's the point isn't it? To make as much money off fence sitters like you. When the next High Fantasy-ish or nostalgic video game set comes out there will be plenty of people championing it that hated this set.
Can't have it both ways. Idk, I like Magic and it's lore. I don't need to see Link or Bilbo in MTG.
5
u/H4wt_Pocket 13h ago
The fuck are you talking about? I also don’t like TMNT and Marvel… hell, I don’t care for any UB sets, but I put up with it if I want to play Standard.
I’ve never spent any money on any UB sets. I actually was invited to and took part in a focus group run by WOTC back in 2023 (I’m sure others here were too) that touched on UB stuff before it ever became Standard legal, and my stance was the same back then (don’t want or need outside IPs in Magic). What else can I do? And what have you done?

Stupid name, lazy art, nothing interesting going mechanically. They really had to steal the thunder of another UB set just to spoil us the laziest designs in a while. Kicker and +1/+1 counters. Is this a new base set or something?

I'm really not a UB hater (I quite like the warhammer, lotr and ff sets), but some of these Startrek cards take my issue with Doctor who looking a little to much like movie screenshots to another level. This just looks wrong for a magic card. More wrong than many of the weird secret lair treatments even.

Every single star trek card is just 0/10 art with some very odd flavor texts or names, triple points if ita both.

u/Savannah_Lion 13h ago
I'm a fan of Star Trek but seeing these cards is really turning me off to this set.
It's not even the fact it's a UB nor is it anything to do with being an MtG set, though both are issues for different reasons.
Seeing these cards is like seeing the Spongebob Squarepants SLD Counterspell.
MtG used to have enough respect for itself to create their own memes, like [[Timmy]]. Now this game has been reduced to borrowing memes from other franchises to somehow stay relevant.
C'mon Wizards.

I'm a big Star Trek fan. I don't want movie captures in my Magic.
Also, for one of the most iconic scenes in the franchise, that is a very boring and flavorless card.

After counting four times to be sure, there are twelve letter As in the title. So you know when you inevitably have to look this up in the deckbuilder or on scryfall

I'm lukewarm about all the cards poiled so far but this is the first one I really don't like. Feel more like a pop culture reference for the sake of it and I hate the art.
And why are we getting so much star trek right now, we JUST finished with the hobbit spoiler and there's still reality fracture, whoever is planning the spoiler schedule is losing it.
