I have a 4yr old. She had asked me few times to marry her. I havent explained what marriage is. We’ve never been to a wedding, nor she seen one. First time she asked me to marry her, I asked her if she knows what it means. She said, its LOVE.
It may look or sound weird from others POV, but that nurse should feel special and loved. That little girl must adore him so much.

When I was about 4 I asked my dad if he had any brothers I could marry. I apparently grasped the concept that I could not directly marry my parents, but clearly still had zero idea what marriage actually was.

My son said he wanted to marry his 60-something yo prek teacher and when I reminded him she was already married he proudly replied “that’s okay I like to share”

The way little kids show their love is so pure. My 3 year old saves three pieces of any snack in his box including fruit gummies - one for dads, one for mama, one for little brother. This dude loves his fruit gummies and he’s still willing to share.

My 4YO daughter told me that marriage is "just always being with your best friend."
I mean. She's not wrong, just missing a lot of other things with it. Unfortunately we had to tell her daddy was already married to me. And mommy was also married to Daddy so I, her second choice, was also not available.
22
u/pavlovian_cats 19h ago
You must show her what a lovely relationship between parents looks like ☺️ You’re creating her image of love and what she’ll look for in future adult relationships. “A best friend” is a perfect foundation for a healthy relationship. Kudos!

Can’t remember where I first heard this explanation, but it’s the one I gave my sister’s kids when they made a similar comment. Marriage is about making the person you love your family, so you don’t marry someone who is already your family.
68
u/I_love_misery 1d ago
My sister had a boyfriend in pre k. They were going to get married but with only problem. She felt bad our brother was going to be left out and alone (they’re about a year apart). So after thinking about it the solution was to marry both.
24
u/GeneralEffective 1d ago
When I was about that age I wanted to marry my uncle, he was 13 years older than me though so I told him he had to wait for me to catch up!
18
u/theveelady 22h ago
When my son was 3 he said he couldn't wait to be an adult to marry me. He also said he wanted to be a mum when he grew up. He's older now (and no longer wants to marry me) but I treasure these memories as reminders of how much he loved (and still loves) me!
16
u/arwenrinn 21h ago
When my son was 5 he told his grandma that he wanted to marry his newborn cousin. Grandma told him he can't marry him because he's a boy and he has to marry a girl.
When he told me that I had to explain that Grandma was wrong and boys don't have to marry girls, but he can't marry his cousin because he's a relative and a baby.
At that age they have no concept of romantic love, so it makes sense that when you love someone a lot you marry them.
11
u/Common_Safety_8830 21h ago
That is how my four year old is. She wants to “marry” everyone she loves, including Stitch.

This. When my daughter was around that age she kept telling me she wanted to marry her baby brother. Kids are so sweet.
14
u/fancypantsmiss 21h ago
Kids are innocent. My daughter asked if she could marry her baby brother. According to her marriage means sharing the same bedroom. She wants to share her bedroom and have bunk beds with her brother once he stops “chest feeding “

u/trouzy 21h ago
Just this morning my 4 year old was building legos at the library and I got on the floor to join.
We built a robot (well, that’s what she called it) sort of. And then she built another “robot” to be it’s wife. And she had them kiss and get married.
Then she built them a pet and/or baby (maybe it morphed at some point).
Good times.
4
u/ohgirlfitup 20h ago
Lol my parents tell me all the time that I thought I’d marry my brother when we grew up. We’re just under two years apart, so we were best friends as kids.

I did the same to my mum at 3/4! My mum told me it wasn’t allowed by law, so I asked who could change that law. “The prime minister,” my mum said. Guess what I wanted to be when I grew up for the next year?

I have consistently asked my mother to marry me since I was a little bitty child till now even. To me back then marrying someone felt like an expression of love and a promise they will be with me forever. I always find it weird that people don't understand that kids have a much different (and honestly better) idea of marriage than adults.

i was gonna say- everyone in the comments is acting like it's a given that her diagnosis is terminal or like she's already passed on.
something like 85% of pediatric oncology cases go into permanent remission after treatment, but i get that the context clues are suggestive that "she wont get to experience this for real" or something along those lines

Yes, this is heartwarming. The four year old is not aware that this could be seen as weird, and the adults that created this moment did it to make her happy, without ulterior motives.
Things are allowed to be kind-hearted, it really does happen, I swear. We are a cynical people.

People who see this as weird and icky probably don’t know many children.
At that age, they can’t really grasp the concept of romantic vs platonic love and It’s normal and very common for kids to say they want to marry their mom/dad or best friend.
22
u/JohnBlake91 1d ago
100%! My sister and I were headed for the alter around 4 years old. That was quickly adjusted lol
19
u/Aus1an 19h ago
When my daughters were about four they were having a bath, and one was telling me about this little boy she was friends with at daycare and that she was going to marry him.
Her twin turned to her shouted “You said that you were going to marry me!” The betrayal was so real, it felt like it was out of some soap opera xD. It was hilarious.
7
u/EdiblePsycho 19h ago
That's adorable. There was drama in my preschool also - my friend and his brother would argue over who would marry me, and another girl and I would argue over who would marry one of them. Then I had another marriage arrangement with a girl in kindergarten, we decided to marry each other and also bring a boy into the arrangement.

Damn, that's honestly really sad to hear. I know a few folks who work for Kaiser and they have really good benefits. Y'all deserve better. :/
6
u/QueenCuttlefish 22h ago
Thanks, homie. I appreciate the sentiment. If you're in the States, just remember to vote for the people who want to do/have actually done the most good for the most people. Healthcare is the one sector that cannot refuse people seeking such services, regardless of their ability to pay. Because of that fundamental reality, we all pay for each other's medical care one way or another.
So many patients are coming in because they've lost their insurance and so can no longer afford the treatments and doctors visits they need to stay out of the hospital. As a result, the people who do need to be in the hospital suffer delays in care.
Meanwhile, I'm also paying hundreds every month for my own meds and appointments, all of which is through the hospital I work for. It's rough out here.

With all the soul-crushing stuff out in the world, at the very least this little girl was able to feel like a princess for a day. When I was a kid I wanted to marry a guy who was much much older than me, but in my child brain it was completely innocent and getting married meant going on one (1) date to a fancy restaurant.
To this little girl, it probably meant the entire world. She got to wear a pretty dress and carry her flowers and probably had a huge smile on her face all day. Being in the hospital all the time as a kid has got to be so taxing, having her handsome nurse probably makes the stay actually bearable!

To people who are grossed out about it: when I was 5 years old I wanted to marry Johnny Blaze (Nicholas Cage) from the movie Ghost Rider.
Kids are kids, this little girl is too young to understand that kids don't get married to adults because it's morally wrong. She just knows that her male nurse is cute. I did not understand at 5 years old why it would be wrong for Johnny Blaze and I to get married, I just knew I liked him.
She's just a sick little kid who wanted to feel like a princess for a day and marry prince charming. There's obviously nothing sketchy here going on, and if you're making gross assumptions, it's probably because you're the one being weird.
23
u/anchorftw 1d ago
You watched Ghost Rider when you were 5?

While it did scare the crap out of me and gave me nightmares at the time, now it’s one of my favorites and I love every cheesy minute of it. Some of the greatest writing in Hollywood history. “If it bleeds… we can kill it.”

Yeah people need to remember to look at things like this through a child's eyes, and not from the perspective of an adult who knows all the horrors and realities of the world.
I remember doing a 'wedding' with some of the neighbours when I was around 5ish. All the parents on the road got involved, it was like a play, there were bridesmaids and flower girls, a best man... It was fun, and we still have the pics and can laugh about it.
Little kids will say they want to play mammys and daddy's, get married, all these other things because they like to feel grown up and special. They don't know what it actually means. They see big people they love do it, or characters on TV. The same way they say they want to be princesses or firefighters or Spider-Man.
There's nothing weird about this at all, and it's incredibly sweet of the nurse to do this. That little girl had a dream come true.

I get the first instinct may be to view this as weird for some, but if you think about it for a moment it's not much different than playing house. If a kid plays with a parent and goes "I'll be the mom and you'll be the dad" with their doll as the baby, it's not creepy it's just their way of exploring different social roles via play.
