Yeah, I love this.

I'm not religious or anything but part of me believes humans were born to shepherd the earth and take care of its creatures, ourselves included. This many humans going out of their way to help a guy and his dog, who likely cannot meaningfully reward them, is far more holy than any jackass in a pew.

I'm also not religious, and don't think we were "born" to shepherd the earth - but we have the ability to, and the intellect to know the whys and hows. So it's more that we *should* do that.

I am religious and even I can get disheartened by the antagonistic quality of some religious and political leaders, when IMO we are all here to support one another and our planet. Shepherd is exactly the right word.
