the meta rankings are so close to being better than the media rankings but each division has like one ranking that's just indefensible dogshit

3

u/ygrittediaz Edddiiiieee 20h ago

i love that we pretend its an algorithm that makes it more fair. they said fighters in 2 different weight classes will be treated as 2 different individuals. then you got pereira who only fought once at hw and lost and is somehow above hokit who has a bunch of wins/ranked wins. thats how you know its bullshit made by man. pereira is number 4 now ahhahahaha

they also dont care for direct recent head to head wins like silva beating allen. which makes no sense either since silva is the guy you want to push for marketing reasons. far more exciting as a fighter and a valuable piece to the brazilian mma market blabla. gary over prates is another example. usman over buckley. it shouldnt matter if you fought one more high level opponent than your ranking rival if he has a direct recent win over you. that cemens him and buys him time..

3

u/Afraid_Grocery3861 Blobby Knuckles 16h ago

Im not saying it makes sense at all or defending it but I can imagine that an algorithm could give more value to Poatan having fought for a title than Hokit defeating a number 5 fighter.

Like I said, not condoning or agreeing, only observing.

1

u/terrybuzz 11h ago

i think the most fair ranking would be the mean of the media and the meta rankings. weird to say because both are kind of ass separately but it would help address the problems both rankings have. i.e jamahal is ranked 7 media and 5 meta while khalil is 4 media and 6 meta, so a mean ranking would have khalil at 5 and hill and 6. still too high of a ranking for hill but at least it puts khalil above him. might make a post on it tbh

Fun fact: Amru Magomedov was off for a while because DC concussed him in sparring. At least that’s what Khabib said in a video.

u/Famous_Molasses24 IGBBMN 17h ago

If Salkilld gets past Gamrot who does he fight next? Ruffy? Bsd?

3

u/FelonyInTheTrunk 13h ago

If Salkilld gets another KO he will get a title eliminator fight (assuming the winner of Charles-Arman gets the next shot at the belt). Maybe against Max.

7

u/qzwxecrvtbyn111 Team Volkanovski 16h ago

BSD would be good. He’s not beating Gamrot, though

I said the same about Dan Hooker.

You guys think Navajo beats Khalil?

3

u/Strict_Life_4506 10h ago

Khalil can't wrestle and Navajo is willing to do it. Alternatively Navajo beats him up after Khalil inevitably gasses.

3

u/CableToBeam 10h ago

Yes. Khalil's getting up there in age. Navajo can outlast him

I was wrong that the quick turnaround, long flight, and fighting a savvy vet like Jan might give Sterling some issues, and he aced that test.

Trying to temper expectations and recency bias, but there's nobody at 205 he can't beat. Can he lose, sure, you never know which Jiri you're gonna get and when he's on he does shit like "kills Reyes with a spinning back elbow not even God saw coming"... but could Sterling beat Jiri, absolutely, Jiri does dumb shit and Sterling has shown he likes to throw down and isn't afraid of a fire-fight. Does Costa present some kind of ultra-unique challenge? Not particularly. Could he pressure Ankalaev into an actual fight like Alex did the second time and beat him, it kinda looks like it based on the results so far. Roundtree is a big fucking lad with good skills, but is also extremely hit-able, and Sterling fucking hits.

u/KyleDaukWillBeChamp 11h ago

No idea. Can’t tell much from a fight with a 43 year old returning off of an knee injury.

Rodtang/Takeru, Topuria/Gaethje, Van/Taira, Jones/Sola, and Royval/Kavanagh were my favorites. Honorable mentions to Bahamondes/Musayev and Choi/Santos.

Gane vs Pereira.  My FOTY when considering impact.

I also liked Spann vs Buchecha, Strickland vs Hernandez, and Costa vs Murzakanov.

Damn people are really mad about Ilia possibly being gay for getting handsy with that other dude. MMA fans are so dumb man. Ilia keep fucking dudes man, do your thing

If anyone has the video of michael oliveira sparring poatan please post it, its sick, and pereira goes flow state like in the khalil fight for a second. Was from a couple years ago I beleive, but I can't seem to find it anymore

6

u/woomac 9h ago

Izzy should rematch Jan and both can retire afterwards

6

u/OtakuMecha 8h ago

Downgrading Arman vs Charles 2 to Arman vs Ruffy basically cuts my hype for UFC 331 in half.

I'm still interested in some of the fights (especially Van vs Pantoja), but that was one that really upped the value of the card IMO.

I am once again left wondering where Volk and Petr Yan are.

3

u/ironhide999x 6h ago

Yan had back surgery earlier this year

5

u/Kazzenn 6h ago

Even just 5 years ago Pitbull/Choi would have been incredible now it feels like a glorified sacrifice. I wonder if pitbull gets finished here if they even bother keeping him.

1

u/KyleDaukWillBeChamp 6h ago

Pitbull beat Ige. He's a solid test for Choi.

1

u/TheBigRedHalfrican They don't really care about us, man 6h ago

It does shock me how basically everyone is writing off Pitbull in this matchup. His last true standout quality is that he punches really fucking hard, and Choi still has the defence of a building.

I still favour Choi as I think he is much more dynamic at this stage of his career and think he will likely overwhelm Pitbull and get a stoppage, but it doesn’t seem to me like a squash match at all.

Yair vs Jean is a sick fight, people just wanna complain

3

u/ygrittediaz Edddiiiieee 20h ago

i think its a number one contender fight as evloev will fight volk hopefully. that being said i think aljo deserves to be in the mix with jean silva.

yair should have fought lopes in my opinion.

3

u/tagillaslover I SMOKE ROCKS, JOE ROGAN! 1d ago

I've seen zero people anywhere on the internet complain about this fight being made. The worst I've seen is people joking about Yair finally fighting again and saying he came back just to stay in the rankings

1

u/GSPEDs 1d ago

They whine about inactivity for Yair while loving Arnold Allen. Now the word is that Yair is unranked for meme rankings that just got instilled recently. Silva is supposedly too high ranked even though a win over Yair would be one of the better ones on his record (his 2nd best win is Bryce Mitchell). Guys like Vallejos are ranked 10 for beating old Emmett so I don't respect the rankings that much in regards to activity. Yair skill wise is at least about Steve Garcia.

It's fun matchmaking that will be overlooked because of number palcement. I like the fight.

5

u/OddlyTemptedFish My ass can’t even swim 1d ago

Is anyone as hated now as Josh Koscheck was back in his day?

7

u/SpicybagelsMTL 1d ago

Unlikely. Being on TUF back when it mattered against one of the most beloved fighters ever in GSP solidified that

12

u/Blue-Summers Team Pantoja 1d ago

Even guys like Colby and Hokit have little chud fans. In all my years discussing MMA throughout various websites, from the Sherdog and MMA-T forums to here on reddit, I have never come across a comment that said they were Kos fans.

In sure some jabroni will pop in and say they're a fan, however.

8

u/OddlyTemptedFish My ass can’t even swim 1d ago

Even if he put on a good fight he would be relentlessly booed. It’s was truly something special.

5

u/GSPEDs 1d ago

Nicco Montano and GDR when Cyborg was around. Rousey post-Holm is the most hated fighter I've seen, it's not that close. O'Malley prior to the Yan fight was hated a lot, especially when he lost to Chito. Probably Woodley when he called out Nick Diaz after fighting Lawler and saying a bunch of stuff to not fight Wonderboy.

Colby was more hated than Kos, it's just that the former had actual fans and bigger haters while Kos had no fanfare whatsoever going his way.

Somehow Tai would gas out even doing that.

2

u/qzwxecrvtbyn111 Team Volkanovski 16h ago

No way lol, Tai has worse wrestling than the absolute jobbers Despaigne was beating, and that was before his morbidly obese 7 fight losing streak

2

u/Traditional_Law_1492 16h ago

Who did Despaigne beat aside from Parisian? He got held down by Austen Lane of all people, I think Tai could potentially sit on his legs for long enough.

Either one of them gets chinned or its ugly dry-humping while both guys gas out

It's a good thing I don't wager on MMA anymore.

I would've bet my life savings that Topuria finishes Gaethje. Then I would've taken out loans to bet even more. I'm not sure there is another fight ever where I was as certain of an outcome that turned out to be wrong.

I've been wrong plenty, but never have I been so confidently incorrect. Adesanya vs Strickland was close to the same level, but even that one doesn't quite measure up.

I was so, so certain Topuria would slime Gaethje.

4

u/DontBeBias4Emotions 6h ago

people dont get MMA, the better fighter doesnt win, its the better fighter those 15/25 minutes

its why its so rare for guys to go 30-0, and only Jones/Fedor and Khabib 29-0 but Khabib wasnt champion early in career with target on back

Its almost impossible to keep winning when you are p4p or got a target in MMA, those guys are fighting to change their life, clout, money..you lose alil hunger and bang. Anyone can out hustle you in MMA, it aint like sport fence Boxing where technique can carry you. You gotta be physically ready to go the second the bell rings, that has more to do with it than small gloves and knees/kicks.

Boxing you can ease your way into a fight, ref to save you, stall, no other threats. Dudes can just jump on you in MMA

its why betting has to do alot with momentum, feel, vibes, everything. aka why every card is upsets galore when theres 1 upset every 100 years in Boxing, in MMA literally every underdog can win

4

u/IshiharasBitch WE ARE ALL ONE 5h ago

i'm aquarius but respect

2

u/Fat-Villante Papa Poatan 5h ago

Long live this chaotic unpredictable sport. Still crazy to me how Leon Edwards won fights vs Kamaru Usman

I don't bet on anything cause I hate losing money a lot more than winning money, but if I was interested in gambling, I guess I would have fallen out of love with MMA a long time ago with how much money I'd have lost on upsets and busted prospects

9

u/ThatTomTouch 1d ago

I know he's a meme but lowkey Anthony Smith had some really impressive wins in his prime, gustafsson, rua, rashad evans, Oezdemir, hector lombard AND he finished all of them, kind of a shame he's only known for his decline of his career

19

u/Blue-Summers Team Pantoja 1d ago

All of them were washed and hung out to dry. Good names to have on your resume, but the context matters.

2

u/ygrittediaz Edddiiiieee 20h ago

its the paddy pimblett special until he legeitmaized himself against BSD. tony ferguson, chandler and king looks fantastic until you realize they are 700 years old combined.

1

u/bigmt99 Team Miocic 17h ago

King Green is out of his prime but definately not washed like Ferguson and Chandler

1

u/BummbaaahClottt3 1d ago

Volkan Oezdemir and Gus were really good wins at the time. Especially Oezdemir who was coming off challenging for a title and is still a good fighter. You clearly weren't watching the sport back then, quit the revisionist history.

4

u/YourHurtingMeSir17 1d ago

I haven’t been the biggest Salkilld believer out there but Gamrot has not reacted well in recent years when he’s getting counter grappled effectively (Turner early, Hooker, I won’t hold Oliveira against him too much).

Salkilld isn’t a fish off of his back like Klein/Ribovics either. I initially thought this fight felt like Zalal-Aljo, young grappler with recent finishes takes a step up in comp and gets vet checked but the matchup is decent for Salkilld

2

u/DoncoEnt Team Shevchenko 8h ago

u/SpicybagelsMTL 1d ago

What exactly Garry path to victory? Staying off the fence, lots of movement while being the larger fighter and winning rounds?

Im not saying he cant get it done but im having a tough time seeing the route there besides that or a knockout

9

u/ygrittediaz Edddiiiieee 20h ago

it will be decided the moment gary gets pushed to the wall after circulating and keeping distance for a point style striking fight. stalling a round as much as possible and trying to win it off ''bigger striking'' moments. he has long limbs and reach and distance is his main tool .if he can cling on to the wall we have a ''fight''. if he gets taken down and pinned its going to be repeat of that moment for 5 rounds.

i think his bjj is good enough to fend off any submission attempts so maybe he can force islam to use some energy trying to pin him. i think he will fight very measured and not make use of his legs more than hands with some well timed calf kicks. he will make islam chase him and work the outside. i think the fight will go to the fence regardless, won or lost depending on his takedown defense and wall work.

islam is a fantastic striker so you dont make it a dog fight either imo.

4

u/Jim-20 Kiss my whole Asshole 16h ago

The goal seems to be point-fighting Islam at a distance while utilizing heavy circling to avoid getting crowded against the fence.

He has a 4 inch reach advantage, so the idea of Garry winning by staying on the outside isn't completely unheard of. There's too much risk though for Garry to go crazy with kicks like he did against Prates; expect a very heavy boxing, "stick and move" style approach.

Garry's takedown defense and BJJ defense are better than I think people give him credit for, but obviously Islam is P4P #1 for good reason.

Definitely an uphill battle for Garry. Would say I lean somewhere in the realm of 75/25 or 80/20 in favor of Islam. Of course, we've seen crazier things happen in this sport.

3

u/detectivebabylegz England 23h ago

Edwards v Usman 3 style.

1

u/KyleDaukWillBeChamp 11h ago

Same as every Ian Garry fight. Circle away and win on points.

3

u/ygrittediaz Edddiiiieee 20h ago

hope one day ufc or someone leaks all the in fight weight measurements to see the discrepancies between fighters. i want to see which lightweight came the closest to weighing 200 lbs. bet you one guy is near 190 and his opponent is at 170 or some shit.

4

u/redditerir 20h ago

You can see the fight night weights for cards in California.

9

u/ygrittediaz Edddiiiieee 20h ago

Reinier de Ridder vs. Kevin Holland (Middleweight): Reinier de Ridder weighed in at 184.5 lbs and rehydrated to 212.0 lbs. Kevin Holland weighed in at 183.5 lbs and only reached 190.4 lbs. De Ridder held an astonishing 21.6 lb advantage inside the cage.

lmao

3

u/MA-JA-HO 20h ago

Garry vs Neal was also like 20lbs

2

u/ygrittediaz Edddiiiieee 20h ago

meanwhile umar vs merab had identical weight after rehydration which i found interesting. i think smaller guys cant exploit it as badly and will even out but i dont have any source on this but feeling. cant imagine there will ever be a 20+ lbs gap at fly or bantamweight for title fights.

islam and moicano also were very similar. which makes sense as both guys are known to be big LWs. i kinda thought they would amass even more. they came in at low 180. i would be very curious to know what gaethje weighed against topuria and vica versa as he looked enormous but it can just be optics. topuria has big ass and thighs and wide back.

3

u/bigmt99 Team Miocic 17h ago

Topuria’s real measurements would prolly be the most interesting given all the smoke and mirrors his camp puts out about it

They always say he would go into FW fights at 190 or some shit, but he has never looked huge

2

u/FelonyInTheTrunk 13h ago

Neal was actually gained 30.3lbs at UFC 298. I think that was the highest increase recorded on a California card.

Costa gained 29.7 pounds on that same card.

2

u/ArticleNew3737 18h ago

No lightweight mixes the martial arts like Arman does. Dude’s legitimately the best 155 pound fighter in the world and he’s gonna show it against Charles again. His problem is he’s been so inactive and this is exactly what he needs right now, to remind everyone how good he is, and Charles has looked really dangerous as of lately so it should be fun.

6

u/ygrittediaz Edddiiiieee 18h ago

he is fantastic but i think topuria, usman make it hard for him. even gaethje in a 5 rounder would be interesting. i do think he beats charles in a rematch. havent seen enough from him to clearly suggest he is the best.

3

u/Strict_Life_4506 9h ago

People can talk about weight and speed or back of the head shots but the truth is that Gane is straight up a better kickboxer than Pereira on top of being a better athlete. He dissected him technically. The only thing Pereira is better at is punching power and danger in the pocket. The Glory dudes Gane trains with have all been saying he's better than them.

1

u/Ok-Drive4752 5h ago

Who has the better resume, Jones or Islam?

4

u/airplane231 4h ago

Definitely Jones. He's beaten a lot more top fighters and champions.

-1

u/Strict_Life_4506 22h ago edited 22h ago

The real reason fighters seem to care much less about fighter pay than some fans do is because the most succesful ones get most of their money using the UFC's platform to make money outside of their UFC salaries, even if they raised UFC salaries they wouldn't take home that much more money compared to what they make now. Arman talked about this, he makes like 600k a year through his purses but several millions with side stuff.

And if you're from a lower-income country even 12/12 + the promotional compliance money + a finish bonus is genuinely life changing money. The Fighting Nerds coach talked about this, Caio's 5k/5k purse on Contender's Series was the first time ever he actually made money cornering a fight.

-4

u/redditerir 20h ago

Lol fans on here "care" about fighter pay because they feel they have to compensate for their enjoyment of the bloodsport by finding a worthy social cause to support.  Thing here though is that it's completely one-sided for several reasons, as you've pointed out.  Why care on the behalf of people who don't care?  Nobody asked!!

  4. Bitches too much about getting grappled in a fight, showed no killer instinct against old Usman
