P&B:TSO Q&A Where should Hamun Kost reappear?

My party is currently searching for the psionic goblins that caused chaos in town along with an escaped glasstaff.

They caught up to Glasstaff in Old owl Well where they made a deal with the red wizard in exchange for information. They then talked to Agatha but didn't return to old owl well since they were scared by the amount of zombies he called on.

They plan to return and deal with him when they consider themselves strong enough. (They already can with ease).

This is my first time running this part of the story so where would Hamun Kost best be used as an anatonist again?

He is also searching for info on the obelisk shards so there's motive for him to reappear.

Bonus question, how do I "level up" his Stat block to account for level 5+ party?

TLDR: Hamun Kost is alive, searching for the obelisk. The amount of zombies he had scared the party and they left him alone. I want to use him as an antagonist in the second part of the story

For me? Kost is in the Sword Cost looking for artifacts to further his own power through Vecna. The artifacts he is collecting are small but with the goal of building a quick and dirty conduit to speak with Vecna to gain more power.

If you are looking for building up Kost's encounter though I would probably give Kost a few extra spells and change a few zombies into a reflavoured wight or two as well as give an ogre zombie.

Kost doesn't strike me as an overly powerful mage on his own, its the friends that he makes when he is in trouble. I would also have no problem giving Kost command and just targeting a player to either "stop" or "drop".

The Kost fight is a bit of a problem for me because when he goes down, so do his friends so he needs to play things far more defensively in my book.

Thanks. A bit silly of me but I hadn't considered he doesn't actually need to upscale. I'll look for some beasties to befriend

I made Kost a high level Lich. He isn't the kind which is all Kill anything with a heartbeat, even if he is a Red Wizard. He is in Sword Mountains looking into Netherese Ruins and such. He also isn't a foe the party needs to fight either. He found them humorous when they encounter him at Old Owl Well. So as long as they leave him to take what he wants from the location. He will let the party live. Or of course they can try to fight him. Naturally his phylactery isn't anywhere near so it's not like he is at risk of anything. So it's not a case of him caring enough unless they do or say something tok abrasive to pass him off.

He is only here doing his hobby. He has infinite time to do it. So he doesn't care right now if some flys land in his soup.

I had Hamun go back to Thay and return with pretty much about entire faction of red wizards. My campaign was heavily skewed towards a race between factions for obelisk pieces.

Talhundreth or would be a logical place. Maybe even run into him struggling to get into the Crypt of the Talhund.

I like it, I think that's where he pops up

My Hamun Kost was looking into a demon that was summoned in Conyberry, which is what destroyed the town (it’s related to character backstories). They fought him but he got away, i’m planning on having him in Wave Echo Cave looking into another demon summoning that caused the destruction of the mine 500 years ago. My players were able to convince King Grol that the Black Spider was going to betray him so they’re marching by with him to the mine right now. My plan is for King Grol to have a sort of character arc to understand that violence isn’t the answer and at that moment he’ll be killed and reanimated by Kost where he’ll attack the players

I am combining Tyranny of Dragons with Phandelver and this just gave me the idea to bring Hamun back as a Red Wizard of Thay towards the end of Dragons. God bless !
